After the successful 3G auction of how 3G will shape the Indian telecom industry are starting to sharpen 24 hours after the utterly exhausting 34-day long spectrum auction process which came to an end, and investment rationale of each player comes to light.

Not all winning bidders for each of the 22 circles will turn out to be winners. A dynamic and complex interplay of the current 2G footprint of each company, their new 3G coverage areas, the amount they will be paying as the winning bid, and the strength of their balance sheets to support funding will determine who makes the most of the 3G licences....and who suffers because of it.  So, who do you think were the real 3G winners and why do you think so people??

The Government, of course.

Biggest winners are the Government and biggest losers are 'End user public" who ultimately will have to cough out the whole auction money plus from their pockets.

As of now, Companies will not able to make much money out of 3G products. May be with 2G if allowed nd later with LTE, if the spectrum bought could be used for those.

However, for the companies who are scouting around for Billion dollar M&A, the 3G and other spectrum cost is pittance. Nevertheless, they can use this as an opportunity to raise call charges by putting the blame on government for the high spectrum cost, though the downfall of ARPU is their own making, with unethical & un-business like, price wars.

Please see my posting elsewhere in this space "Selling of Wireless spectrum to private business house is wrong."

Reliance communications

Though I am from Bharti airtel, I think Reliance Communications got it big here as they went for the top and bottom circles in the value pyramid of service areas. The company will spend 76% of its total investment in 3G spectrum on Mumbai and Delhi. In all it has bagged 13 circles for a price of Rs 8,585 crore compared with nine of Vodafone circles for Rs 11,618 crore.

Wins in Delhi and Mumbai give Reliance Communications an edge over its peers, because this may be its opportunity to catch up with Bharti and Vodafone—that lead in these mega-cities with a margin—and leave nine other operators in the circles far behind.  Earlier they lost mainly due to the CDMA thing but now with 3G at hand and with some good areas under them will make them even more competitive and stronger and will give Bharati and vodafone a stiff fight in the telecom space..

After coughing out 67000 crore and not getting Pan India operation, almost all the player would be joining hand with each other except the CDMA operators like TATA and Reliance. With volume difficult to come, as world over 3G is being used by only 15% mobile users, charging high ARPU in Indian context is a thing of past. Also BSNL/MTNL have already set up the prices of 3G in Indian market, it is going to be difficult time for telecom operators.
