As we can see, nowadays it is so much easier for ladies to drive. Also elderly people who have difficulty getting licenses can drive it so easily too. People would rather spend Rs 3000 per month on driver but wont buy an automatic shelling out extra Rs.75,000.Why?

Why Automatic Transmission is popular in india????

idea posted by Gaurav Vasudeva B.Tech/B.E. student, indo global college

hello to everybody,

Here i am again, as such my knowledge is concerned about Automotive sector in India i think the question which is been put up here is wrong or the person who is trying to put it here is not very much concerned with the Automotive sector in India .... well my saying is like this just because as such if we see in our previous indian automotive fields then there was a korean based company of automobile named as Daewoo so here i am trying to correct the thinking of the person who is putting these kinda questioinare that during that times of 1997-99 in these times indian public was been aware of this new technology called automatic versions in automobile sector in india may be Daewoo was the first one to launch it or sumbody else in india but my approach is this that it is now to be a second decade (nearly to be 12 to 15 years) that we are concerning to the technology of automatic versions of cars in india rather we can say in those times people use to mport the automatic versions of BMW with automatic transmission to india or other brands products to india .....so this technology is not new to india anymore as well now we all know that in india we also have the automatic versions in our hatchbacks e.g two box seil cars like i10 automatic is there etc. and whereas the point of adapting this technology it is very much clear that if u r purchasing a good automobile like BMW or  Mercedes so in that u also see that these copmpanies are making their most of the products in automatic versions. so it would be very easier to say that automatic  transmission technology is good for indian customer as it is the best approach to place the automatic technology in the country like india

I am supporting Mr Antony's statement as it is always the matter of fuel economy in India, But its also the size of the A/Ts which cant be used in most comon cars in India.

The question should be the other way around. The way I see it, for car buyers in India, the 1st priority is fuel efficiency and then ownership costs neither of which is achieved with an A/T. With the chaotic traffic in most cities and messed up roads, how many would admit being able to drive an A/T for 100 meters without having to switch to neutral,1,2 every 25 to 30 meters? The buyers who would go in for such cars maybe the ones who are used to A/T's perhaps those returning from the US or elsewhere and know what they are getting into. Even in such cases many in that segment who can afford to own and maintain an A/T would probably be back seat riders with their ears glued to the cell phone. Why would he want a driver to enjoy the comfort of an A/T when he has shelled out all that money. Might as well go in for a pricier M/T with other features.

The question atleast on my computer screen is " Why A/T is popular in India?" Was the question supposed to be the other way round?Read not popular, my answer is for the latter.

Indians grew up in India on Manual transmissions.Automatics were always considered as a luxury, was considered as not so fun to drive, and with some brands who tried to popularise it went away showing tragic Fuel efficiency. The two favourite questions that come from an Indian car driver is 1. Whats the fuel mileage you get 2.whats the 0-100 or top speed. The automatics that were launched were a disaster in bringing both and gave a negative impact to the consumer mindset.

Most Automatics come with the petrol engines and petrols expensive, coupled to low mileage and poor acceleration makes/ made the scene worse. What I type is not keeping in mind all the consumers, but the majority forms in this group.

Things may change if there is a car with a decent STEPTRONIC / TIPTRONIC box, can be fun to drive and matches a Manual Transmission figures.

Pricing

Automatic transmission cars cost significantly more than normal cars and the fuel economy is also lower.

The initial cost and running cost are higher and hence A/T is not so popular.

indian market is an economically driven one, so automatics simply doesnt sell because of their price and their fuel economy, even though automatics have their own set of advantages.but it is a welcome change tat automatics are slowly and steadily comin to the market.

The cost of automated transition cars are very high for a normal man to afford.. What to talk about other general class...Only a handful of people can afford it. This is the reason they are not yet been popular in India.

India still needs time to adapt

idea posted by Kailash Sharma Product Development Manager, Force Motors

In India where safety, economy and time is of crucial value our cars suffer and more than the purchase it’s the maintenance cost of a vehicle that is looked upon. And automatic transmission in car is relatively new to India it will take time to adapt.

The cost, fear of mileage, ease of repair all contribute to this. Seld driving in crowded roads will usher in A/T. The car manufacturers also should make A/T versions available more freely.

Automatic transmissions are good to drive and fuel wise also very economical , comfort is excellent. The head ache is all when it goes wrong ..there si no way one can use it to move further , other than carrying them off. ... more so too complicated for a owner who however holds to a driver because of the Image in society !!

Yes the initial investment for purchasing a A/T is more and the fuel efficiency is always lower as the torque converter being coupled to the engine  results in a continuous extra load on the engine.

More over its not reparable. If it fails its needs replacement which is very costly. For example a A/T costs above Rs85,000 in a Hyundai Santro not to mention about other expensive models.

Indian Consumers are extremely price sensitive and they understand value for money concept well. So A/T will be picking up very slowly in INDIA for sure.

David is 100% right

idea posted by Vijay Kumar Proprietor, Super Fine Industries

I strongly agree with Mr. David. Automatic transmission cars are expensive to own. In too much traffic, its not possible to shift to neutral gear every 30-60 seconds. As soon as the car gathers speed, sudden braking needed in traffic jams. So manual gear shifting is easy in that case.

A/T. is best suited in U.S. Highways where constant speed can be achieved.

Buyers mentality and cost

idea posted by Jigar Mistry B.Tech/B.E. student, A.D. Patel Institute of Technology

From my viev and analysis, the main reason for less popularity of automatic transmission is the cost because people in india will think that why to pay more and get less milage for an automatic transmission.Indian cutomer's thinking is diffrent from the other deloped country's customer, more economical. And currently the buyers in indian automotive markets are more young man then old people and females and most of them are buyers of hatchbacks so they are in "Budget" so its obvious that 75000Rs. is lot of money for that kind of luxury.

Indian Auto Market Conditions not ripe enough to accept change

idea posted by Arjun Singh Wadhwa Mechanical Engineer-Other, GE Oil and Gas

Well in my opinion the maximum selling cars in India are either the small segment or the mid segment cars (2-6 Lakhs). Automatic transmission would add atleast another 5-10% equipment cost to the initial price. The cars which are priced above 10 lakhs the cost impact in terms of percentage is not much therefore we see more of automatic cars which are on the higher segment. The reduction of fuel economy factor I feel is just a paradigm. There is no increase in fuel consumption.

Heavy Traffic & Road Conditions in cities

idea posted by N. NAGESHWARAN ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER, M/s. KEC INTERNATIONAL LTD. (an RPG group)

In almost all cities in India, Roads are with less width and there are no more scope to widen them and driving auto geared vehicles on those roads are very impractical as auto geared vehicle has to maintain a minimum reference speed limit to get the gear changed and for which traffic jam does not support.

Also auto geared vehicles, if runs down on the road while on move, it cannot be even pushed to bring to the road side which in turn creat a havoc with major traffic jam.

The condition of roads in cities are not much developed and the auto geared vehicle require smooth road to move than only maintainance cost are nominal, other wise it is huge.

sorry, but I dont agree with the statement, because Automatic transmissions are complicated but they are far more useful in the heavy traffic because driver does not change gears and shifting of gears is Automatically done with respect to the speed change. its just because of the size of the Transmission system and its complexitywhich cant be used in most of the cars manufacture in India

Automatic transmission is a good concept, No any sales man having a knowledge of it, due to that they can't permote it & conveince the customer.

In India, Its been seen only in sedans 7 L ++ range until now. Even though i10 launched it. But its still new to us and it will take time.

Also why would one be ready to pay 75000-80000 extra and in return take 2-3 km less mileage.

Its quite new and will take time for Indians to properly experience and accept the technology and luxury.

In future Auto Transmission may be prefered commonly as driving with A/T is very comfortable. Only Problem is cost of maintenance/repairs. Manufacturing at local (in India ) level & Mass production will reduce the cost . This technology is definetly a Better technology for driving comfort.

idea posted by Tata V.S. Kameswara Rao Proprietor, Deals-on-Wheels

My observation is the manufacturers are not so keen to promote this because, it requires skilled technisian to attend these cars. They dont want to cause more cost to train and take risk. Otherwise, market has the acceptance, When people want to buy a 6-7 lac Fabia or Punto, Why dont they prefer Auto tran ones with a marginal increasee in price.

idea posted by Blake_H Audit Manager, EMB

Make sure you look after your transmission the proper way. Transmission issues often cause people to cringe contemplating how much money it is going to cost them to fix. You may have to obtain a money advance to replace your transmission faster than anticipated if you do not regularly take care of it. Make certain you change your transmission fluid and filter at least twice a year, and have regular maintenance done, and you should keep your transmission running smoothly a little longer. If we discovered lately that our cars have problem,we will encounter a bigger problem. Why?Because it will make us spend a lot more money because other parts of the car will also be set for repair.
