Why do you look for women in so called top jobs ? Who is Sonia Gandhi ? She is more powerful than the PM. When you have Mayavati as CM of UP, Sushma Swaraj as Leader of the Opposition, Mira Kumar as the Speaker of LS and so on the list is endless. It is a misconception that women are missing out on top jobs. Look at the entertainment field : Katrina, Kareena and their ilk can give many heroes a run for their money. Look at the television, at the electronic media : so many women are in top positions. If you were asking about IT, well it is possible that you do not find a lot of women in top positions. But that doesn't matter, I wish more women don't spoil their creative brains in such a boring field. It is good if intelligent women are avoiding this humdrum business of IT. They should select more creative areas like designing, art, entertainment, writing , politics and administration : the list could be endless.

I think its wrong to say that women are missing out on top jobs …. All our top Pvt. banks headed by
Women and company like pepsi , Britania ,and many more lead by women …. But at the same time
For other women most of the time looking safe jobs rather than challenging job … this thinking
Makes women out of top jobs …. Women should looking for more challenging job as they are equal
In talent .
I think Mr. Sood has said it all.
Women have reached the top in all walks of life. In fact there are people such as Shahnaz Husain who have no competition !
Today's paper speaks of an all-woman crew flight.
Having said all that , there are still areas where we can improve ; I would like to see a lady heading the Forces , Army , Navy or Air Force.

Darshana, I agree fully with your statement that it is a male dominated world. Unfortumately the world pecking order has been set-up and institutionalized by men for long years. While women are on the up and up, it will some more time for women to become as common in the top jobs as men are. It has after all been less than 100 years since women have started moving in to the professional domain. I am sure there have been cases - one off - before. but they were mostly the exceptions. In my college there (40 years ago) were no women for the first 21 years in engineering courses. Now there are women in all disciplines.
The main thing for that is that in all aspects it has to become more and more meritocratic in selction of candidates.
When that happens all forms of inequality will drop by the way side.
I may be a little idealistic is stating this but I feel very strongly that when one applies for the job competence to do the job ALONE should be the decising factor on recruitment. In my 30 years career across 3 continents I have known men and women of many races, nationalities who did an excellent job of their work.
So the only REAL hurdle is to change the attitude of selection.

Shiuli,I wish every women a Happy International Woman's Day.This is a deprecated list from Business Today's Most powerful women in Indian Business and its just to show India is changing and especially perceptions are changing.
Its good, well said Mr. Amit. You have given complete list of women in top positions. I totally disagree with the topic that why women are still missing out on top jobs.
In fact they are....all who are capable, very deserving great women are in top positions. To add few more in the list...I would say Nirupama Rao, Indra Nuyi etc. These are the women they really worth to be there.
But in India, it will take few more decades to add more more nos of women as compared to men coz our past history, women's overall personal development etc.
But dont think that wherever women are...they are simply great. she is mother of all .... Coz now its time to forget the back stories.....women need no empowerment...they are already empowered by nature.

Women has more responsibilities towards their family n kids compared to men.sometimes it is hard to concentrate n put effort on the job as it demands.most of the women gives priority to their family than jobs ,while strugling between the two. Many women efficient n talented sacrifices their jobs to maintain peace in the family. |

women make good homemakers and mangers too but its just that while trying to find a balance in both they tend to concentrate more on their family but still we do have women in the top in few sectors .I guess sometimes even her family has to be equally supportive to her to help her reach there

Sorry, Darshana, I must differ with you, on this. For as long as women wait for men's approval, this situation will continue to be the same. For as long as Rabris tow the lines of hubbys like Lalus - like Sita behind Ram, the situation has not hope of improvement. Learn to take away what is rightfully due to you or you will never get it, just like that. |

When child born, if the child is boy then we say that he will become Engineer/Doctor...But this does not happen in the case of girls always...If you find the ratio how many boys are getting higher education than the girls then you will be more clear...Girls are not getting the confidence, motivation from their parents initially...There are many reasons for this also...But we can not discuss here...Now in modern society this is changing but still they are not getting opportunity... |

A woman can either dare to break all barries and explore/ exploit the world. Else she keep caring about other's wishes and don't excel. |

compare to men, women are more loyal to their commitments/team/justice/welfare. you may need to be ruthless sometime , and its not easy. You need to be diff person altogether for hours/days/months. there is no upper limit of need of diplomacy on continuous basis apart from very long working hours on regular basis. |

The society is living under so many layers that there is every day quarreling over "domestic " chores. She is fighting every day to open up.there is no support around. Those who frees, are successful in creating niche for. themselves.Indra Gandhi.Sonia Gandhi and other top ladies are from families which are already liberated but what about of those unsung heroines, who aspirations are to meet up.It is therefore about time that girl child and boy child get proper education so that paternalism can be effectively neutralized and girl child can hope to be in par with her counter part boy child.Unless this is attended to,reservation may not be much of help. |

In spport of my idea ,the word,'Paternalism, was put across the Toostepians. It appears, the idea has not been well appreciated because of its mechanical force. As a matter of fact women are coming out breaking the social morose.
All living creatures are born with the same make up that female take the responsibility of home maker or tend to children. The male will search for employment and support the family. This very concept need overhauling,The process is slow but with the existing pace it will another two or three generation to accept the role of a female also as a bread earner.Once this is accepted, no one could stop her to take the mantle of a leader. In my view no amount of reservation will improve their lot unless the psych of a family undergo drastic change other wise why 30%?
Charity begins at home. The girl child should feel that she is equal in status to her brothers. The parents must afford full freedom to her whether her career, education. As a matter of fact parents are so protective that grown up girls feel insecure.Majority of Indians consider the girls to be dispensed with. The situation is improving but the change is very slow. The faces we are seeing are those of fortunate women who have a open family. So i consider paternalism is proving bane to girls.

International Woman's Day was ushered in triumphantly as Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the Oscar for Best Director. The corporate world managed to take the shine off the success as the World Economic Forum (WEF) released a report criticising businesses around the world for failing to close the gender gap. |

Its found in medical studies that There are tasks allocated by mother nature to both mens and womens. Thats why there are Anatomical difference in both gender. Basically there is a huge anatomical difference in Male brain and female brain. It has been seen that female brain is not that much compliant with male brain. There is a big differance in power of to think. Thats why there are not single Major scientist in world to give a name for example. There was a madam Curry, But she also promoted, guided by her hubby Perry cury. Its very simple to observe that, why there arent any womens working in hardcore industry like steel and industries which uses furnace like instruments. Most of the five star hotels were served by male scheffs only. Womens try work in there too, but there are some physical limitations given by nature. Its better to accept the fact and let the womens do the job which has been allowed to do by Mother nature, instead of trying to equalise both sexes. |

At this age, Expecting women to tend the kitchen, Children & Home is a Very
Retrograde notion, not in tune with the current times. |

Hi, I would put the reason for not many women reaching to the top to not availing, exploring or grabbing the opportunity due whatever reason. See the amount of participation, involvement in this idea contest, only two women have given their ideas, is it because women do not have idea, opinion or interest, or all the ideas and opinion given by men mean that it is dominance. The reason could be historical, traditional and cultural. Men were supposed to be rulers,Leaders,Gurus, Preachers etc., and women were more into homemaking, supporting, seconding to their male counterparts in all their roles. with the change coming and societies opening up in terms of their thoughts, approach, lifestyle and culture, things are changing and the women have to avail, explore and Grab opportunities. Unfortunately It will take time to see the equal numbers as the mind set on either side needs change. The people who are running the country do not even wish to share one third, the question of fifty fifty is a distant dream. However as for as corporate is concern, its the matter of the three words " Avail, Explore and Grab the opportunities and willingness to reach to the top, I strongly believe that we men do not stop you women. Prabhakar

It's pure gender bais that is very well exisiting - we agree or do not agree - but surely the conventional though system is still deeply rooted in many of our societies, familes, circles, groups, organisations & institutions. |
