Since Cairo took to the streets, there is one question that comes up repeatedly in India. How have we been saved from such anarchy, in spite of our faltering democracy? So, why can't we expect Egypt-like situation in India?

Due to our Democracy

idea posted by Disha Roy Lecturer, St Xaviers College

I think is because of the democracy. It may be ineffective and nonperforming, but it allows for oppositional voice. Our political elite is spread out in different parties and in different states and express diverse views.

This contrasts with a banana republic where the ruling coterie hangs together. Every group member knows that together they are like a bunch of bananas; if you break free, you get skinned. By contrast, India is probably a banana-peel republic: our rulers are all over the place, slipping and sliding, from post to post, promise to promise.

i cant expect a revolution in INDIA but I expect revolution in BHARAT,because our country divided in two parts now one the bedroom thinkers who lived in multistory flats and another who live in villages and struggle in his entire life, feel the difference and then expect revolution in BHARAT.

Actually there are 2 reasons. One of course, as you correctly point out is due to opur democratic roots. The other actually is because we are a lot more cynical then most people. We know that any system is corrupt fundamentally and that a known devil is better than the promise of an unknown angel! This cynicism combined with the laid back and tolerant attitude is what makes revolutions truly impossible in India

THE PEOPLE'S MENTALITY

idea posted by NATTERAJA R. ARIKRISHNAN GM-Projects, Bentec Electricals & Electronics Pvt. Ltd

We can not expect Egypt-like situation in India. This is because our mentality. In India whether rich or poor, they are able to get what they want according to their status or ability. Our main worry is to protect ourselves & our families. By and large people are mentally corrupted and not bothering about others what they are doing and thinking what we get. Moreover our attentions will be diverted from one issues to another by the politicians very skillfully and people will also forget the issues one by one and people are used to that. Our families set up and cultures will not allow to resort such agitations against atrocities for fear of life threat by the people who are in the helm of affairs. For example a union leader is corrupted by the management to give up the issues/demands against the management and the union leader is capable of greasing the palms of the workers. Similarly the politicians during elections. If any one turns against the govt or the big sorts, he will be sued false cases or will be victimized by some other ways or will be frightened to the extent of kidnapping their children. So they can not dare, the money/political power will flow to suppress. Moreover our people can do anything as they wish whether good or bad as we have the right to think, do, speak and etc, etc,and are capable of sustaining the odds in their life.

Thanks Ms. Disha for the referral.

when a teacher teaching in primary school, a constable working in a police choki, a local grocery shop owner, a business tycon, a politician, a local leader, a contractor, an engineer, a doctor are all working to safe tax and not showing there real income or got employed by bribe how can you think that they can revolt. moreover remaining are just living for there bread and butter..

Power & Divide and Rule

Although we have got our freedom from British, but the politicians have learnt to Divide the people basis on caste, creed, religion, region etc... and what ever may be the love of Power to rule in political class does not bring unity.

Can happen

idea posted by Ravindra Sharma Managing Consultant, CHEF-India

Disha,

Most of us appear assuming for certain this can not happen in India, based on present assessed purely from what we read or learn thru news. Travel a few kilometers off any highway, India is different. The increasing levels of crime, unemployment, increasing gap in rich and poor etc. are indicators that many of us tend to overlook.

Continuation of increase of self servicing individuals in governance, for a few more years without drastic course correction is sure to bring a situation even worse than Egypt to India, as it may not be as peaceful.

Misuse of democracy must stop for it to remain relevant in future. The democracy as being applied on date is demo-no-cracy implying POWER decides what rules, who, how and for whose benefit whch surely is not democracy with ever increasing numbers of deprived.

Hoping against hope is not a solution.

Admission of a problem brings us closer to solution.

Many friends have cited strength of democratic roots, yes six decades is long yet not long enough especially when compared to continuing deprivation of millions by a few who are seen cornering others share. Hunger is known to have turned the most docile to cannibals.

Continuing to Test patience was never a good idea to practice, history tells us.

Economic sustenance

idea posted by Debashis Gupta Head - Control Assurance & Risk Management
Besides democracy, one other thing which presents flare ups like Egypt in India is the fact that most people are getting two square meals and maybe much more (people in Kalahandi may not agree with this, though!). Egyptians are fed up not only with the corruption (just a concept, unless it hits yourself in some way), but also with the lack of economic opportunities - no jobs (some people can't even marry due to this!), no environment for entrepreneurship, etc. In India, the last 'popular' uprising probably happened before the infamous emergency of early '70s, which may have occurred because people felt cornered by the economic hardships (JP's movement probably just provided an outlet to the public anger), besides of course such things as forced 'nasbandi'. This can be seen in other countries too. The economic elite in China seem to have entered into an uneasy 'marriage of convenience' with the Communist Party, where the middle/upper middle class don't mind the lack of political freedom as long as they can make their money. So, as long as people in this country have something to look forward to by way of rising economic prosperity, rising corruption et al are hardly likely to move them to action (though local issues may sometimes move groups of people to 'candle light vigils').
