According to a report by a report launched by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), these days, developing countries are facing serious environmental and health problems from the alarming increase in hazardous waste from electronic devices. The report, "Recycling - From E-waste to Resources", listed old and dilapidated desktop and laptop computers, printers, mobile phones, pagers, digital photo and music devices, refrigerators, toys and televisions as main sources of waste.

UNEP said, it is predicted that developing countries will face rising environmental damage and health problems if e-waste recycling is left to the vagaries of the informal sector, unless action is stepped up to properly collect and recycle materials.

So users, I would like to know from you all, why, do you think developing countries are facing e-waste crisis?

Improper recycling management of e-waste

idea posted by Smita Dalvi Sales/BD Manager, Hewlett-Packard

Developing countries are lacking proper management of e-waste recycling. In developing countries, e-waste management, normally, are left in the hands of vagaries of the informal sector. So, if proper management are not taken place to recycle e-waste, very soon, developing countries may face a huge e-waste crisis....

The developing countries should form e-waste management policies and implement them strictly at every level. The H/W manaufacturers should be made part of these projects. There must be international standards for e-waste management. No developing country should become a dumping yard for e-waste which is hazardous

Yes i do think

we need to identify HOW to recycle these things first and establish a recycling process.

I feel that government should introduce a seperate disposal utility for the e-waste. When we come through the dustbin , we could identify 2 bins .. one for decomposable waste such as paper and another for non decomposable such as plastic, polythene covers. Similarly there should be a bin for collecting the ewaste in every area within the cities and it should be collected and sent to proper disposable unit which recycles the ewaste. Also there should be incentives for the concern that recycles the ewaste. So the ewaste shall be properly disposed. THe plastic which is recycled from the waste should be accepted by open market so that the concern doing recycle shall get benefited

Import of Technolgy, Obsolute of Technology before End of Product life and many more..

There are couple of reasons behind generating E waste in Developing countries & thereby crisis...

1. More Imports of E waste generating equipments... as Technology comes with Hardware and pressuries on importing of Hardware which has high cost and promotes to manufacrurer it in Low cost domestically which inturns to E waste... e.g. Cameras Initially brough from Japan & korea and all but then replaced with Indian made items which turned out as an E waste..

2.  Obsolence of Technologies.... technology gets developed fast and this makes the earlier Obsolute.. e.g. Mobiles... the New touch screen mobiles get replaced with earlier old mobile sets with Antenna & all... This creates lots of E waste....

3. Lifecycle of Product: Obsoluence of Technology force to Discard the product before the end of product life turning it into E waste which goes without any value.....

As developing countries has basic advantages of Low cost Production and helps to export with Lower prices than Developed countries... they also faces problems of E waste ...

4. Lack of Knowledge & Awareness of E waste: By the time everybody comes to know about generation and problems of E waste they miss the time and land up with troubles of Handling, Processing and disposing of E waste...

This can be avoided with Proper planning and all.....

The sector is typically UNORGANISED and only few Kabadiwalas do the Dismentling, Reprocessing etc.. but Now a days couple of companies have started processing of E waste.. few based in Bangalore, Chennai etc...  but still it needs lots of attention to avoid future problems....

I am completely agree with this. We don't know what exactly should be done by a materal once it transforms into waste. There are hardly few industries in India working on E-waste management. Although some work is going on extraction of metals from hazardeous e-waste. But that's too on the research level in some institutes like IT-BHU, Varanasi. There is need of some industrial partnership to make it a success.

Developing countries are facing numerous other more important problems and hence this issue is not in the top of their priority issues.

E-waste are highly health hazard toxic materials. These should be collected, sorted, processing, ignition  in very scientific manner with close supervision of subject expert. The quantity of Ewaste will be incresing day by day, therefore it is top most subject for its disposal scietifically.

As e-waste soars, UN urges smart technologies to protect health

With the mountains of hazardous waste from electronic products growing exponentially in developing countries, sometimes by as much as 500 per cent, the United Nations today called for new recycling technologies and regulations to safeguard both public health and the environment.

So-called e-waste from products such as old computers, printers, mobile phones, pagers, digital photo and music devices, refrigerators, toys and televisions, are set to rise sharply in tandem with growth in sales in countries like China and India and in Africa and Latin America over the next 10 years.

The study, Recycling - from E-Waste to Resources, launched at a meeting of hazardous wastes experts in Bali, Indonesia, predicts that by 2020 e-waste from old computers will have jumped by 500 per cent from 2007 levels in India, and by 200 to 400 per cent in South Africa and China, while that from old mobile phones will be 7 times higher in China and 18 times higher in India.

Developing countries are thinking that they can have financial support to face environmental change in climate. They also thinking it is waste of time n money to do recycle e-waste. In that mean time they are thinking how to avoid them. It is a problem for developing countries. They will face more environmental change and they cant able to manage that. And they will follow them in recycling process.

Developed countries law & regulations are very strict & financial punishment against defaulters are very heavy. So, they use developing countries for their Holidaying e-wastes. Mean to say that they use to dump these to get relief from their laws.
