We often hear that at some place a building has collapsed killing so many people. Its a sad thing to hear & more surprising that the structure that provides you shelter can also take your life & become your coffin.

So, my dear friends lets dig a bit deep & see what are the major reasons why buildings collapse prematurely?

Corruption

idea posted by Anjali Sinha Construction-Heavy, Sobha Developers

I think this is the height of corruption. Corruption make the contractors to mix more sand instead of cement. They buy more thinner rods & the foundations are not deep enough to provide a better support.

though corruption is important aspect the most buildings are constructed unprofessionally since most builders are not engineers and engineer employed by them have to listen to employer and thus low quality of work this is not true only for buildings but also in government work

Corruption is the one and only reason for all that is happening in India...which is debated here. I sometimes really fear for whats going to happen in the next 10-20 years.....on one side the world says India has the highest potential for being the most developed economies of the world in next few years, but if corruption the virus deadlier than the HIV and other fatal biological diseases, corruption has taken over our blood...its flowing within us....after some years we will find it in our genes as a development.......no one in India is away from it....someone may claim he/she is not corrupt...but somewhere in life at some point he /she has helped corruptin in some or the other way.

Premature collapse of a building is a symptom of corruption.

Negligence

idea posted by Venkatesh M Warehouse Manager, Larsen and Toubro

I think this is due to the negligence of the contractors & the house owners also. Owners have the full right to ask the contractors about the materials used to build their houses. Due to the negligence of both the parties unexpected accidents happen with loss of many lives...

Hello,

I do agree with Mr. Venkatesh, also i want to add some points. The soil investigation has to be made correctly and all structural designs shall impliment all the datas preiscribed by the SIR(Soil Investigation Report). But i india most contractors will not follow the repots. For example the depth of the excavation, type of rebars, mass concrete grade, water proffing, proper backfilling and compaction. Third party test should be made for all important activity. so to do so atleast we can minimise the failure in collapse stage.

Shreedhar.

I agree with Mr. Venkatesh. Any effort to plan modulate and regulate the methods to control and use materials and labour is simply avoided.

Very few planners and contractors (In the small & medium constructions) take intrest in the quality of work being carried out. It is the "Chalta Hai, Kuch nahi Hoga" attitude that leads to faulty buildings.

Wrong sequencing or work, bad plastering, Totally wrong ways of mixing & using Concrete and mortar, Bad Waterproofing, hopeless curing.... all these do not require more money, just a little bit of dedication to the job you are supposed to carry out.

There must be some prescribed method to quantify Negligence and levy penalties. Because I think Negligence and carelessness is an infective behavoiour: It affects everbody who comes in contact with those who practise it.

yes it is negligence..........but only contractor is to be blamed for this??????

I my opinion the engg. in charge, consultants and owners are equally responsible

Is it not engg's responsibility to keep a check on quality issues??

If consultant sees a quality being affected can he not object to the same and take corrective actions?

The owner if have bargained with the contractor to an extent ladinding to malpractices or delayed payments may be..

Therefore i feel that the quality issues have to be disscussed openly amongst all involved and a fare solution must be achived.

The quality issue must be sorted out before construction with due consideration of cost and viability.....

the buildings collapse because people give more importance to money than to their professional competence. they get materialistic and forget their moral , social and professional responsibility towards nation and fellow citizens. In the race of making money they lower their standard so much as they don't even think for a sec and play with the lives of many people for own selfish motives but they never think that their families are also a part of this social circle and whatever one does comes back to him multiplied several times. the choice is with the individual if he wants to reap good or a bad crop. As you sow so shall you reap.

During building construction time builders use inferior quality raw material for shake of maximum profit. The material quality finally resulting collapse of building.

WE DON'T HAVE LAW TO PUNISH THE PERSONS RESPONSIBLE FOR SUCH ACCIDENTS.WHO EVER IT MAY BE MUST BE CHARGESHEETED FOR KILLING ,THIS MAY ONLY SAVE INNOCENT PEOPLES DEATH.

DEFICIENCY OE LAW IS THERE WHICH MUST BE RECTIFIED.

I think the governement should insist the Builders while taking permission that the buildings being constructed should comply to the quality standards and get the certificate from quality control engineers registered by the govt.

Inability to follow the procedure of quality control is play major part in collapse of building prematurely. So I think builder or contractor must given the minimum 50 year of guarantee on paper to purchaser.

Hi all I think people has made up very beautiful systems like client, contractor, pmc etc., but they are not sticking to the things and not performing their jobs properly , few of the things have been sidetracked, like initially while erecting itself fewtimes they doesnt do proper compaction, not giving proper design mix, problem with the concrete they use and if the project is getting delay and pressure is more on the people all the people up the hierarchy sidetrack and overlook many thing which are necessary for the strength, even though they are legal bodies for granting permission or good architecture but things are happening like this

for example , a good concrete for 10X 10 sq.mtrs should contain 320kg of cement if the construction site is within 25 kms from the sea shore. this is called severe zone. But in reality the concrete manufacturer is paid only for adding 230 kg cement and the mix is balanced with flyash called PFA. hence concrete doesnt acheive the five integrated qualities of good concrete namely 1.good strength,2.good workability,3.Low water cement ratio, 4.durability 5. Non-Porosity. everything is justified when the giants of the field themselves compromise. easy to compromise than educating the consumer.

In order to increase the profit margins, the contractors and builders compromise on the quality of raw materials which causes the collapse of building prematurely.

Acra-ca-dabra

idea posted by VJ New Product Development, A construction company

Its magic :P

An analysis - out of total collapsed what percentage were developed by private builders and what percentage under contracts given by government bodies.

the ratio would be private:contractual = 10:90

The greedy builders, or to say develop a building, thug people and run away, very few in today's times. (SRA - Slum rehab buildings might have a inferior paint and plaster job done (cosmetics), but still they have a strong structure)

But when it comes to contractors (under government contracts), things change, suppose a builder earns 25% behind a project. Now this contractor also vies for that 25% in a government job, (there is no right percentage though, but I guess government considers 12-15% returns on a project).

So on the onset 25 - 35% goes to _ _ _ _ _ _ _ (guess ?? i am sure its very easy ;)) so out of the balance money left (contracts are always inflated, to adjust the _ _ _ _ _ _ _, but the no. of _ _ _ _ _ _ _ have increased and the greed to earn more profit also have increased, so everything goes down the drain, and monumental rubble is all that is left back .....

Its not only collapsed buildings, just look at the ROADS, goddamn those vietnamese have better roads than us.

Corruption fuelled by more griddiness by some of the Builders/Contractors is the main reason for such faliure of building. Usage of Inferior quality of material, non conformance of structiral design and lack of supervision by qualified Engineers/Professional is the prime reasons, propelled by corruption/bad intentions by Builders/Contractors is the prime reason.

Working for the greed & not for the deeds makes buildingscollapse prematurily

idea posted by Romesh Nath Kashyap chief engineer, NHPC Ltd

Builders(In govt contracts or as private) are from India & the persons associated with construction industries are, perhaps, non aware of safety of structure and lives to live in. Element of non-conern of safety for others is not their cup of tea. Thier motto is to earn money as much as they can by not adhering to the spcifications laid and quality aspect at everystages of construction. New buildings do collapse on account of improper field investigation for foundation, proper checks of design,Checks in quality of materials & inadequate checks in varioous stages of execution. Supervising agency for quality is required to be directed under the quality concious authority. Or Builder needs to be transparent & strict to profit as per contract/mutually agreed upon.

Once the motto of deeds comes upfront element of greed will vanished. Buildings will never collapse beyod shelf life

Why do buildings collapse prematurely?

idea posted by Purushottam Shrestha Civil Engineer, koshi & Neupane Nirman sewa Pvt. Ltd.

Really its a competitive world, every group (client, consultant, contractors) desires to reduce the project cost, which ultimate leads towards the low quality work. So infrastructure has to carry the excess load more than its capacity and collapse.

Concrete specifications within 25 kms within the sea shore is considered as severe zone demanding 320kg of cement in a grade like M20.how many adhere to it or pay for it. hence in reality they manage to get it at 230kg cement per cubic meter .how can such porous concrete withstand the chemical attack near sea shore. nobody is prepared to see the practicality. they want to show the competitors background and willingness to get the lowest price.the five integrated aspects of good concrete is never considered by the buyer. Curing is never given importance in this fast world. Pour and forget. long life of concrete depends on its scientific curing.
