idea posted by Raghu Kastury Principal Consultant & Head of Strategic Business Unit - Retail & Distribution, Sundaram Infotech Solutions Limited

Initailly the social networking began with the idea of a few friend chatting on the net. Gradually it became place to meet new people. Gradually, when some celebrities and senior executives also started using it to easily connect with others, the whole thing has become a fashion, then it became forum for promoting ones own profile, ideas etc.

As time passed, social networking shaping according to the needs of all types of individuals and hence it graduated from luxury to a need.

Today people use Social networking for almost everything though the top of the list being meeting new people and finding new opportunities. It is also widely used as sounding board, discussion forum and a place to find views on issues faced by the society today

Networking was not possible earlier when mailers, and posts were in vogue.  Internet has turned many professionals to join in one platform to discuss issues and debate with ease.  Professionals feel at ease to bring issues on TABLE (internet) which would not have been possible in a board room... A great medium to develop good attitude.

Curiosity to know & Learn

idea posted by Dayanand Deshpande Senior Consultant, Ernst & Young

I think this drives Social networking the most the curiosity part to know about other people's lives and self-expression which inturn drives millions of people to online networking sites.

Curiosity to know about other people's lives and self-expression with updating one's knowledge by getting insights from like minded people is driving millions of people to online networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and many others which are out there.

I think Dayanand is right.

Most of us started it due to curiosity. & after getting people of same interest then it becomes part of yoyr daily routine

to visit social networks. In my case I joined only for getting expert's views on specific topics & for updation of

knowledge.

Social neyworking is a tool available at your service 24 hours a day & one can get the key knowledge of his interested

area at anytime. It is good for everyone.

Since the social networking is providing an excellent media to learn new things and to clarify , students like me are here. It is not only the subjects learnt but also, various people and their life styles. If you believe "learning is not restricted to subjects", then obviously you must believe that it is the atracting the active learners with its instant tutourships.

Well said Anurangshu! It is indeed info and people that people seek and get at these informal gatherings. The thrill of connecting to someone with whom you have otherwise no contact with for decades is also an adrenaline rush!!

The connect has an emotional attachment and such attachemnts generally give soem sense of satisfaction and nostalgia of all things good and bad! Its a very HEADY FEELING... Thanks for the referral Dayanand :)

Networking - the best gift of " internet "

idea posted by ASOKE KUSARI Domestic Private Banking-Executive/Manager, A large leading PSU Bank - India

Networking is the best gift of internet. Social networking sites give us a platform for this. Why we network ? To know others, get their views, to express mine and thus be-friend like minded people. This acts as a stress-burner, removes lonelyness and creates a 'feel-good' atmosphere.

Be proactive on issues and have their voices heard.

idea posted by Arunangshu Choudhury Agent, L.I.C

People are not satisfied just to read the Morning Newspaper and carry on with their lives. They feel that if they have an opinion regarding a subject concerning them then it should be only proper that they should be heard.Social networking sites are the perfect platform that provides an instant access both to an audience, and to opinions of like minded people as well as to support from others for one`s opinion.I feel that over the next decade, opinions expressed in Social Networking sites are going to gain increasing relevance in any functional democracy.

It saves time. In our busy lives, making time to schedule face to face meetings doesn't fit into our schedules. We can "catch up with one another" as time permit.

As emails, addresses and cell phone numbers change throughout your life, you always have a constant place to reach someone so social networking sites are place u can be in constant touch with your near ones and dear ones..

To kill boredom

idea posted by Azhar Kazmi Professor, King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals

So many of us are glued to our computer monitors for most of the day. Being human, we do need to interact socially. Social networking sites come in here: they provide a virtual means for human interactions that is so important for life satisfaction. By accessing them for some time we try to kill boredom and fatigue in our working lives.
