Human Resource is not always the most loved function in a business. Most of the employees in an organisation don't like HR's .They don't co-operate with the HR department although the HR professionals work their best to help the employees to sort out their issues and try to make everything easy for them. The hard work put in by the hr professional are not valued at all.....

This brings a question into my mind ,"why everyone hates HR so much?"

Please pen down your opinions which could in turn help HR professional's in their work.

Not Everyone

idea posted by Sumit Jayaswal Associate/Sr. Associate -(Technical), Cognizant Technologies Solutions

Well, not everyone hates HR department. At least the HR people do not hate HR department. Well, i do not blame the HR department of any company. The HR is meant to manage people and mostly the preferred source of bad news communication from the mangement. If there is some good news to be brought in for the employees, the company's CEO or MD does it. If there is a bad news, they just give it to HR and they have to communicate. So in effect, the HR comes in the Hate line of the employees. What employees must look at is the root cause of the bad news which comes in.

Moreover, HR is hated because its the one point of contact for all the issues of employees. Its difficult for them also to resolve those issues as and when they come. I have seen some very good HR managers and some not so good ones. I just can say that how an HR manages the employees, makes him a saint or a devil.

I have few questions for my fellow HR professionals and Business Managers, they are:

1) Everyday as a person or professional you meet so many people; do all of them love you?

2) Talking about profession, which is the profession, which is liked by all and sundry? Do you like lawyers…police personal…politicians? Why only to point at HR-Professional?

3) How many of you Love George W. Bush and how many have you hate Osama Bin Ladin?

Challenges for HR Professionals -  Human Resource Professionals deals with the most difficult part of any organization – "Human Beings". They are not machines. They have emotions, sentiments, different behaviour, different beliefs and culture. A part from that, we have Government, labour laws, and law enforcement body. Over and above that we have investors, management and board of directors. I don't know, how you are expected to keep all these people happy?

Competencies in HR Professionals - certainly, even HR professionals need to change the way they work. "Proper Communication", I repeat, "Proper Communication" can solve most of your problems and issues. To have proper communication, one should have proper information about the labour laws, about business, about policies and procedures of the company and about the industry. Most of the time…most of the HR professionals…don't have this. Proper Communication also includes "Proper Listening" and that is also lacking in some of the HR-Professionals. "Understanding Human Behaviour" is another trait, which can help in addressing many problems.

Why employees hate HR?

ó Employees hate HR, when

ó They don't get solution for their problems.

ó They don't get proper information.

ó There is communication gap.

ó You fail to keep your words…your commitment.

(Is there anything else that they expect from you?)

Solution

Of Course, "Proper Communication" can solve many issues. If there is any query, give "legally supported" and "logically correct" solution. I also feel that as we are growing...as there are more and more mediums of communications...we are not communicating properly and I tell you...proper communication can solve many problems both at personal and professional front. Those people, your employees are not duffers or dumb…don't try to be over-smart. Don't lie to them. The day they come to know that the information provided by you is false or fake…they will start hating you.

Customer Centric Approach - This is the best way to know…where you are wrong. Why they hate you? And what are the areas of improvement? Treat them as your Customers and let the part of HR department behave as "Customer Service Centre". Treat them the way you like to be treated when you are "Customer" and at the service centre of another service provider. As they say, "Don't do what you don't want other to do to you"…"Don't serve the food that you don't like to eat".

Think about it…and share your comments and feedback.

Not every one hates HR, but specially those who loose some thing due to the HR. In my view HR is bad only for few things, when they play politics, when they give the importance to known one's and stay selfishly with others... and especially they recruit to known or own person, which is not good. This are the things where HR stand wrong else is too good and I prefer there should be a HR department in every even a small company............keep smiling HR's coz ur smiling makes incriment to salary

Whenever an employee hates HR deartment, the reason is very simple, their attitude towards the general employees is not good, they may be acting in the interest of the employer, they may be neglecting the employee safety in many cases, and well as one our friend has noted in his comments, they think as if they are the real employers.

They never understand that its a give and take business between employers and employees. While a company hires a employee to work, employee in the company need his compensation. HR guys are only facilitators. They act bargainers, while they don't even understand the business. How foolish! I really hate them.

Escalation, Responsibility & Accountability

idea posted by Nitin Jagdale Lead Human Resources

Though it is said that HR are the facet and bridge between 2 strong parties...It goes much more difficult to handle things becuase HR are said to be responbsible and accountable for things which they cant take a decision on. Also HR do escalate concerns of all to respective stake holders, however the concerned authorities take time to get back to them, & others think that it is HR who are not interested to help the employees..

They are held to be responsible for decisions which they have not taken (though i do agree that it is their responsibility to convey in the right manner).

HR are the one who understands both the parties and know as to how put front before them as well. It is only the lack of patience in the individual parties which makes them stamp the HR's.

Wooo... after reading all the comments I realize that it is truth that nobody likes HR department :( .. Well said by Nitin that it is HR deaprtment which makes a strong communication bridge between employees and management. HR department gets cursed on company policies because employees look at those policies from short term prospective and not long term...

If you all (who hate HR dept) ever get a chance to meet someone who has spent a good time in the company e.g 7yrs.. 10 yrs.. etc.. talk to them. These are the guys who have actually get benefited with these policies.

Guys do we know that HR is the closest match for a CEO position in any company because HR is the department which derives all your company golas, objectives, etc... HR's are not bad at all please co-operate with them. HR does his/her level best to keep their employees happy and pampered.

HR personnel carry huge responsibilities on their shoulders. They are the ones to frame policies for the benefit of the employees including themselves. They cannot really afford to be over friendly and do favors to people by making special cases for individuals. They are justified in being rude at times and strict. But the same people outside of their roles are good people!!

All the HRs may not be like that, but its true to quite an extent .... and I speak from 30 + years of no-nonsense talent war and battle with them (in fact, Owners were mostly acting as HR heads before the advent of this breed of Co-partners and / or strategic partners with Employers)

... As there is truly a war on talents being fought then possibly a winning strategy is to develop new talents and nurturing them as and where required, but instead ...

Too many times we find HR turning away talented contributors because they fail to meet one bullet on a list of desired skills. It is not that difficult to train a skilled individual on one new skill.

In my own case, I find that my potential talents (latent or otherwise) have not been properly estimated, appreciated, recognized and nurtured by HR / Owners / Employers and others including senior subject experts / professionals etc and HR guys do not have much subject expertise ... many times on soft skills ground, they reject and condemn (play God) many instead of giving them proper support / training !

The role of HR is to Judge or estimate with objectivity without bias and prejudice for the upliftment / correction of the individual and not condemnation (where Employer / owner and other professionals and subject experts can & may err) !

WHEN THE GUY WHO IS RECRUITING IS NOT SURE ABOUT HIS OWN JOB CAN HE/SHE TAKE A RATIONAL AND PRACTICAL DECISION:::

by the way :: HR judges the behavioural suitability( i havenot been able to judge my behaviour and i have grown old )

technical suitabilty is the part of core guys ( their decision normally and mostly prevails)

( core competence)hr job : issue appointment letter( albeit stamped and signed )

HR is a department that is all the time performing the role of an AGONY AUNT to the employees and APPEASING the employers like they would GOD! And why not? The onus of finding a suitable person for a vacancy is their job. Laying the ground rules of ethics and of policies is their job and then to find a mean between two DEMANDING parties;

EMPLOYER: He is the one with the MOOLAH!

EMPLOYEE: He is the one earning the employer the moolah!!

Who is the better option?? The answer is obvious. SO i would nto HATE HR at all. I would rather keep them embroiled in my AGONY and keep them by my side :))

Does Everybody Hate HR?
Tough one to answer in Yes Or No !!!

But if you get things in perspective you will understand how Important you (or HR Department) are & will not worry if some people Hate you for any reason..

I think that HR's needs some characteristics in addition of his/her study and knowledge about that interesting field. HR manager should be accepted wo/man in the company that every body could trust him/her and know him/her as one of his/her friend.
So it is better to become friend with all the personnel and touch their work and situation closely. In this way s/he can help them really. HR manager must have stronger relationships with the worker of the company. And pay more attention to their request and benefits. But I believe that most of HR manger pay more attention to the owner of the company and try to make stronger relationship with them.

I believe in many ways many Fast Company nailed it.

The attitudes of many HR employees do not always match up to the teams they are in place to support. Furthermore, (I have recently discovered)HR is notoriously unresponsive to individuals or organizations that are not “on the inside”. Said differently, returning telephone calls and simply following up on commitments are nothing more than common courtesy and professionalism.

Unfortunately, these courtesies are often not extended by the hand of HR.
Perhaps some of the “attitude” may be due to the lack of financial and strategic autonomy afforded to the HR department by many organizations. More of us should consider HR to be a strategic partner Vs a cost center intended to perform the role of corporate police. In order to do so however some drastic change in attitude needs to occur. The first step of the process could be to adopt an attitude of servant leadership and “how can I help you” attitude.

Finally, the HR department and staffing are often the first exposure many outsiders have to an organization. In my professional opinion, we need to do a much better job in acting as goodwill ambassadors to the outside world(your network knowledge). Only then can we capitalize on all the external resources and opportunities that so often fall by the wayside.

I completely disagree with you. What happens today is a follow up of past. Why should I hate you if there is no reasonable reason? HR is a dept. to look after the welfare of an organization's most important resource- "Human". But I am sorry to say loads of examples scattered in my country where human are not treated as Human. As a result that human hits back those humans. The core reason behind such hatred is not listening to employees, not reaching to their points of view, not knowing their social back ground etc. etc. To accomplish organizational goal most of the time we impose "something" to an employee instead of motivating him/her to do the same! And the most somber thing is that HR dept. (s) are even not in a situation to admit this matter.

We should not paint everyone with the same brush!

Have to realize: Great people in this world have great personality, and great people never cry FOUL.

The same way everyone in the industry has to understand that, doing his great job while keeping hurmony is the best tribute to his/her role.

It is never smooth task for anyone starting from developer--leader--managers-heads-CEO-Ministers--Prime ministers of Countries, All of them face challenges in their work in many forms, many expectations.

But that does not mean you will accept that you will be hated!!!

Wonders are possible--People understand behaviour and no one loves rude, tricky, shrude people.

Politeness, sensibility, reasonability is always praised and signs of gentlemen!!

This is lame excuse that HRs faces challenges so they are doing difficult jobs and so are they hated.

Solution is: Becoming professional, yet a sensible person with mind, respect for self and all.

normally HR dept in any organisation acts like a dictator thinking as if they have the maximum onus and they are the policy makers and they are responsible for every thing that happens in organization.all though it may be true that they have so many guidelines to adhere, problem arises if they act with some partiality depending on situations.law makers should understand that employees are also humans as them and HR dept has to listen the voices of employess even though words or feelings are sweet enough.impartial work practices alone can sustain and not the simple adherence to policies.

One of the top reasons why HR is hated is because of the overtly political and slimy ways of HR people. I have noticed that some of the best HR people are those who are not HR persons by qualification! It i sad but true that many HR people thrive not on the basis of what thet know and do, but who they know.......

We normally Hate HR because:

1. They think they are the one POLICYMAKERS and everybody has to maintain it..... the worst thing to even IMAGINE....  They really behave like a Ringmaster of a circus.....

2. They mostly forget that They are the supporting dept and has no or very less value addition towards Organisational growth....  they keep the issues of supporting a side and try to find out company policy for safeguarding themselves and there thoughts..

3. They also OUTSOURCE the function of RECRUITMENT to consultants and all.... and believe in only admin jobs... What is the use then..???

4. If any urgent thing comes up Instead of doing the work they fingure out policies of organisations.....

5. they just dont believe in Employees welfare... they rather TRUST in Companies policy Matrix and all...  for them company policy caomes first and then Employee.... There honesty is for Framework and not the Employee as they say Employee comes and go but Ploicies has to stand for last.....

6. When Problem comes they just step aside by handing over some stupid forms and all to fill it up...

7. The Biggest Problem... Salary... I dont know Does they really pay from there pockets or what...???? and that too not even on time......

Beside these there are several other areas to be evolved from Individuals....... Finally everybody has different reason to HATE HR....

it has travelled a long  journey from personnel department to human resource to human capital management .where it sets strategies for human capital which should be aligned with the organization strategies..i mean to say is the time has gone when people used to hate hr dep. because today the hr department and organisation aggregately in favour of talent management they are more focusing on satisfying the needs and wants of employees so that they can retain the talent as well as attract the talent .they are more helping to solve grievances and so on..

The owner may convert HR into H.R.D.

idea posted by ASOKE KUSARI Domestic Private Banking-Executive/Manager, A large leading PSU Bank - India

The owner(s) of the company may turn HR into Human Resource Development ( HRD ). It is the owner who decides how to handle his/her human resources and HR men/women are to give effect to that. They position themselves in between.

As any asset is to be nurtured, developped and maintained .. so is the case of humans. For better results, employees are to be developped and fine tuned as per the mission of the business ( or wishes of the owners ). Here comes : HRD.

If all unplesant works are bestowed to the HR and all good job is handled by the Management, the image of  HR may be lowered. In all cases, role of the third entity, here HR, may not be plesant all along.  Any bad feelings in handling HR may be taken as "job hazards" which is there in all professions. Nothing 2be wooried for. HR is there and will be there.

The HR function is tricky - they have an intrusive job, yet they should appear nonintrusive. The HR guys are supposed to service other employees while they appear to be more in the picture to make themselves relevant. This galls - the ability to walk the tight rope is crucial in HR, or everyone ends up mocking at HR.
