Why Facebook is dominating the web?

I believe Facebook is keeping the allegiance of the users because of a concept called "technological lock-in." which is the idea that the more a society adopts a certain technology, the more unlikely users are to switch. They are positioning themselves to be an online identity via Facebook connect. We get our real name,  real friends, and even if they manage to navigate the privacy quagmire, they're poised to become an universal login. It's something that feeds on itself. At some point it becomes a critical mass. It becomes so strong that its difficult to unlock and I think Facebook has reached that point and because of this facebook is dominating the Web world.

Efforts have been and are being made to bridge the gap between Digital World entities and Physical World entities. In my perception that is the prime point which is unknowingly helping people to feel it more real while using Facebook. And as we all know we love it when we see some concept developed in digital world materializes in the physical world. For example I can use my cellphone's GSM network and simply send one text message to a particular number to update my status message. The magic here is that my cellphone always stays in my palm. This is something which gives a lot of ease to the end user and makes the social networking more living. In India Orkut attracted the users a lot in the beginning but couldn't keep them moving to FB because of the severe portability issues. Somehow it always stayed in the computers. While on the other hand, Facebook developed its mobile interfaces for almost all the handsets/PDAs. The ease of application development, which are used socially, was another huge plus point to Facebook's empire growth. One use's an application and publishes his/her feelings out of it to everyone else in his network... WOW!!! Recently Facebook’s contact synchronization feature has been unveiled. Now I have the latest contact numbers of my friends thru their Facebook profiles directly in my phone. This again eliminates the irritating task of maintaining the phonebooks.

So overall I continuously get a feeling of shortening of the gap between Digital World and the Physical World while using Facebook… and I am loving it!!!
