All these days we are really heard a lot about Green IT and everybody going Green and all, and there are many companies adopting green technologies, but when it comes to the actual implementation and monitoring of these initiatives, not many  seem to be interested in it says the recent Gartner report.

The survey was conducted with more than 130 respondents from the infrastructure and operations (I&O) management, the Gartner study found that although green IT issues remain at the top of the agenda, respondents consider vendor and green procurement a low priority activity.

So people though we everybody is talking about Green, why Green IT is not happening?

No proper Energy management

idea posted by sumitra dutta Consultant, XYZ

There is no proper energy management both in terms of capacity and cost and this can only be effective through advanced monitoring, modelling and measuring techniques and processes which the concerned IT managers are not doing. Though managers talk about green all the time, but when it comes to implementation there is nothing happening from their side, and this non implementation of Green IT trend is mostly seen in datacenters where the IT managers are not paying attention for measuring, monitoring and modeling the energy use, and in many client conversations reveals that although the green IT and datacenter energy issue has been on the agenda, but then many managers feel that they have to deal with more immediate concerns before focusing attention on their supplier's products.

IT implementers do ponder upon energy management and energy conservation but wholesome conversion to Green IT principles is often not the top priority. Focus is more on getting more clients/customers or business retention, adding upon more of product lines (product development)and enhancing core business activities. Today, although the Businesses are aware of Green IT but mere awareness is not enough, they are to be convinced about investments on implementing Green IT. Appropriate education supported with case studies about ROI and ultimate savings acheived by business enterprises owing to Green IT endeavors can help this important cause.

24/7 is killing Green IT

idea posted by Dennis Aries Owner, Arkro IT

Nowadays, we all need to be able to do our business 24/7. That means that offices will have to be able to access the data around the clock as well. The majority of the energy-consumption is taken up by servers that need to be running day and night. Allowing several hours of downtime each day will make a lot of difference

Because it's hype . . .

idea posted by Tony Kitson Project Leader/Managing Consultant, STATIS Ltd

I reckon "Green IT" was never much more than IT industry generated hype in the first place - just another marekting label aimed at getting people to buy new technology.  Now we've got "virtualisation" and "clouds" to keep us occupied, Green IT can go whence it came . . .

Sorry if you find this cynical but the IT industry is in a class of its own where gimmicky marketing is concerned.

Requirement of changing office-culture

idea posted by Dennis Aries Owner, Arkro IT

Green IT only works if everone in the office is willing to participate in shutting down equipment when it is not needed. A lot of computers and monitors keep running just because it 'takes too long to shut down/start up'. Ensure that the participants are willing to shut down the machine and wait a few minutes for it to start up.

Green IT is no priority

idea posted by Dennis Aries Owner, Arkro IT

While Green-IT is always a good thing to mention during sales-pitches, there is always a matter of cost. Green IT doesn't have that much revenue (and it sometimes even costs money) in respect to the money that is made outside the company. Only the very large and the very small companies benefit from Green IT. Those in the middle have the least effect for themselfs, but would have the largest impact in total (because of sheer numbers)

profit vs profit with honor

idea posted by HENRY FAJARDO NICOLAS M.D.A. Local Planning and Development Department Head

Business are still in the old ways of "profit concept" only now are the days for "profit with honor" deeply understanding social responsibility...unless this thing deeply understood Green IT will have it's way.

Unaware of what where and how!

idea posted by Vishnu M. Head - Software QA/QC , UAEEXchange & Financial Services Ltd.

May be the managers are not aware of how much energy is getting consumed by their data - centers each day. Suppliers and clients should work together to find a solution that is green and cost efficient, which would be a value add for the organisation.

Some study (cant remember the article/link) reveals that less than 50 % of the managers insists on switching off the monitors/ work stations at night!,

More than 25% of those "committed green"s are not aware of their options available. All what they need are awareness and a little push, that can drive them ahead to a more greener environment at their disposal.

Make them understand that the green IT make their IT Green, along with their pocket. Rise in profit with reduced cost means greener face for your competition!
