Gone are the days when the stars could be seen clearly in the sky. Gone are the days when going out for a stroll was more about inhaling some fresh air outside. Everyone is aware of the growing levels of pollutants and carbon in the air. Since, a great deal of the earth’s warming is attributed to the companies; the organisations are slowly understanding it and adopting measures to reduce the harm they are causing. The trend of Green IT which has picked up impressively in the west is newer to India.

Though everybody wants to go green now, because they have realised the advantages Green IT offers, the main complaint which every corporate has is that there’s not enough of literature available on the agenda which will help as a guiding light. An extensive survey stretched over a few months to know how India was heading in adopting the path treaded by their western counterparts was conducted to measure the quotient of “Greenliness” of India or how far the Indian Enterprises have inculcated the Green factor in their operations.

The survey mapped the levels of Indian enterprises on Green IT, their perceptions, the challenges faced and the stage of implantation. So, why do you think Greenliness quotient is unable to take off??

The Awareness issue

idea posted by sumitra dutta Consultant, XYZ

Before anything takes shape, it’s always important to know how aware the people of the country are, because implementing is always the latter stage. The awareness level gives a brief idea of who the “takers” really are. A very interesting thing to note is that almost 69 % of the respondents admitted being aware of the concept of Green IT.

What’s more fascinating to note here is that as much as 76% of Public Sector Undertakings (PSU’s) were aware of it. However, one has to remember that awareness does not equate to the willingness to implement. But what’s heartening to know here is that a majority of enterprises which were aware considered Green IT a “reality” and a “necessity”. But still quite a lot were unsure of how Green IT would be useful to them, providing a picture of ambiguity revolving around the matter.

Committment and Enforcement factor

One important opinion to note here is that currently the importance is on high productivity while environment gets a lower priority. Go green is one of the least cared about issues in India and i many  developing countries and most developed coumntries make it more difficult by dumping  their wasste, in India, creating a bio-hazard. India too is producing large volumes of e-waste thus compounding the problem. There is also lack of commitment and no laws to force the agenda. Most purchase decisions are based on the cost perspective and a large majority of the enterprises find it difficult, to source green products , due to the cost factor involved. Unless the people working at the top of an organisation are motivated,  the trend is likely to continue. Personally, I do not think that it is an awareness issue. I am certain that most top people in a company, are fully aware and understand the agenda. But, it is just, the way , they work. Perhaps it will be slow,  gradual may be.  The Green Factor, will happen and like Ritika Kharbanda says, Way to go India.

Is the Economics of profit affected ???

I being for the construction industry always thing of 'Green Building". But unfortunately this increases my cost by almost 25%. Even if i think of investing this amount the awareness in the minds of final user is absent. So as there no harsh rules from government for green building, No requirement for the customer i become more reluctant in investing in "Greenliness" concept.

Secondly i support the Idea that there is less awareness about 'Greenliness" in general public belonging to all the sectors. So the government shall take initiative in creating awareness.

But as i human being i strongly support the Idea of " Greenliness"

It seems that there is lack of willingness to go for Greenliness. As because it will require investment. Further, it looks as if people concern are not very much interested. In fact awareness regarding the same has to be initiated. That may fetch some amount of result.
