For the first time in many years, second-tier IT vendors are not sharing the same optimism as their larger counterparts about a recovery in demand for IT services.

While the country’s top technology firms including Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys Technologies and Wipro grew their revenues in double digits, But whereas companies like Tech mahindra, Patni, Sonata and others are finding it difficult. There was a time when everybody wanted to comeup with an IT services company, but the greener pastures are there for the top vendors and not for these mid-size and small IT firms.

Why Mid-size & small IT firms are struggling to maintain growth??

High attrition

idea posted by sumitra dutta Consultant, XYZ

I think it has got to do with high attrition that IT companies are seeing, not only big companies, but also smaller and Mid sized IT firms are seeing too many employees leaving at a time, at times whole team quits together in due course of time, so with proper management looking after things and with attrition we are seeing these Mid sized and small IT firms struggling like anything.

The top firms are ffering salaries and benefits which the next level of firms are unable to. That generates the attrition.

lack of "uniqueness "

idea posted by Shaikh Mohd. Laeeq Technical Associate R&D , ThinkLABS Technosloutions Pvt. Ltd.

The major cause of concern for mid level companies  today is the lack of enthusiasm and creativity  right from the top level to the smallest engineers. Similar products , same service offerings , cut throat competition among all for share of the pie , i think it really has to do with the internal R&D of companies and as of now this cell is mostly dead ,

Looking on the other side of the challenges the world is facing , we do not have great tablet apps, mobile apps etc.. and this sector of computing is going to sky rocket soon . On the cloud side , we lack creative cloud based offerings ,apps etc... and there is am huge market for such efforts .

Indian IT firms small or big will soon have to create in-house technology to survive in the future and remain in the leadership position in their own domains .

As in any industry I.T too seems to have a "Sheep in the flock" mentality..if we observe the IT trends like 3G, Database, CRM, embedded or recently Cloud computing everyone follows but no one has a better solution which makes them stand out from the rest of the crowd. This is the only reason why Mid sized firms remain that way or worse "not at all".

The best way for a SME to grow phenominally is by offering a unique solution or product which attracts big fish to have a JV or Buy them at huge profits.

One more observation is how many IT companies(Big, Mid and Small) in India are known for launching a new Product or are product based? Answer is there are very less or none. Dont you think this is a serious matter for the future Indian IT scene?

Change in Customer Mindset

idea posted by Atul Kumar `Confidential, Confidential

Along with high attrition which is hampering the Mid size companies, the change in Customer Mindset has lots to do.

Now customer are talking about single vendor to deal with their all IT projects and supports. The big companies are able to provide them from Front Desk, Level 1 to Level 5 support without any glitch where as Mid Size companies are not able to meet this standard due to their limited business scope and capabilities.

Now lots of contracts are won by big companies or by multiple company as single vendor to the client. This is where the mid size companies are finding it difficult to get the projects and sustain their growth.

The Mid size and small IT companies have to change their mind set with the demand of time and consolidate their business with multiple partners to offer a big range of services to meet the current customer demand and sustain in the market in long run.

I agree . Coustomer mindset is playing the key role.

Big ones not only can offer wide band of services but also offers long term sustainability with that wide range of services.

Added to this SMEs risk seeking capability had come down drastically due to recent meltdown. Both Customers and SMEs are yet to comeout of the fear of "relapse" of economic down turn. This will soon kick in a big time Industry consolidations with M&As, if not already started. I have seen few......

Small and Mid size companies don't have clear vision and strategic plans to achieve them, just because of the matter of survival.

Undoubtedly Customer Mindset is one of the factor, but the basic fault in most of the small or medium organiztion internally, is the inability to establish, whichever process it has to be, and having once established it, implementing and thereafter owning the responsibility to better it! Once this is stabilished, there will be automatically be a higher benefits in terms of process delivery, resulting in customer satisfaction. Since this is lacking, customer mindset too is confused.
