In recent years, India has welcomed back tens of thousands of former emigrants and their offspring. Recently, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh personally extended an invitation to all Indian-Americans and non-resident Indians who wish to return home. But, many Indians who spent most of their lives in North America and Europe are finding that they can't go home again.

About 100,000 returnees move from the U.S. to India in the next five years. They are joining multinational companies, starting new businesses and even becoming part of India's sleepy government bureaucracy. But a study shows 34% of NRIs found it difficult to return to India - compared to just 13% of Indian immigrants who found it difficult to settle in the U.S. The NRIs complained about traffic, lack of infrastructure, bureaucracy and pollution.

So, What reasons do you people think is preventing NRIs to return back to India...

The problem is with our system...

idea posted by Kavitha Shankar Sr/Principal Coresspondent, ABC

Our system is so much conjunsted and corrupted that it has no value for talents but contacs and money. Thats why good talents always lack opportunity. In west, education met India's notoriously inefficient, opaque government, and things went downhill from there. Something like what happened with Dr. Hargobind Khurana, whose talents was ignored by India but was recognised by England so he went there, later, when he won Nobel prize, India started calling him back. Now, why would someone return in this system?

Quality lifestyle

I think this will be a problem for all the NRI's who are returning back, as the lifestyle which they were enjoying there can't be found no where to match in Indian conditions, though they feel coming back but not so, as they feel the lifestyle will be a lot different than what they till now had got used to and getting acclamatized to this new style will be difficult for them.

Value difference

Indian citizen migrating to other countries where there is value difference in currency can get benifit to their savings in terms of Indian currency.

Interst rate on investments in India is better than that of the world average, savings invested in India will get more returns.

Once when an NRI settels in other countries where he enjoys value difference will get accustumed to that and will find difficult to part with that atmosphere.

NRI's get certain tax benifits in India, they will continue to enjoy that.

Genearally Indian brains get recognised in the world, they may prefer to continue to enjoy that advantage. Allways it is human psychology that run after value, where you get value, intrinsic or otherwise, there you will be.

True value for Knowledge in foreign countries than domestic!!

idea posted by Manish N Chugh Officer Trainee, Stock Holding Corporation of India ltd.,

I personally feel the value for education and knowledge in more appreciable in foreign countries than in India. Also to certain extent the pride of feeling/telling that i am an NRI to the localyte makes them to be there than here!! . .. Thank you, Manish N.

Cheers!!

Lack of facilities

Although they feel homesick yet lack of following prevents them from coming back:

  • Personal security
  • Loss in income
  • Lack of adequate infrastructure
  • Uncertainty in general
