As I was going through my newspaper, this piece of news report caught my immediate attention and thought of sharing it on the platform to get the better view of what others also think on this important issue.  It is said that the Indian Army is grappling with an acute shortage of officers. Despite the recession, it has been unable to attract more talent and contain their outflow. In 2008, the army was able to take in 1,500 officers - but over 1,800 left the force. The army now faces a shortage of 11,238 officers.

Army's sanctioned strength is 46,615 officers, but it has been facing a shortage of 11,238. The problem was aggravated when about 3,000 officers sought premature retirement in the last three years. Most of them moved to the lucrative corporate sector. But there has been an increase in the number of withdrawals of premature retirement applications since January 2009. In the past six months 65 officers have withdrawn their applications for premature retirement.

Now, the army is hoping the financial crisis and then the Sixth Pay Commission -- which has increased their salaries -- will help bring in many more to the armed forces that is facing a shortage of middle-rung officers in particular.

So what do you think is the reason for the dearth of officers in India army? And why people are not joining Indian Army? Do share your views on this.

Low pay package and risk of life

idea posted by Himanshu Pathak Sr/Principal Coresspondent, Coresspondent

In India army, one won't get too high salary which he can get in a corporate world. Moreover, he always has risk of life since these days, terrorist activities has increased a lot. Because of all these problems, people tend to move towards corporate sector where they can get more salary with less risk of life. Government should increase the salary of officers to stop leaving them and to pull more and more people in the army.

Hey,

i dont think that low packages are a reason for shortage of officers in Indian Army. As of now with the Sixth pay commission in effect the difference in package between Defense and Co prate sector has been nullified to a great extent.

Yes, there are three main reasons: (i) Risk of life (ii) Low salary, another one as mentioned by Nijagunaradhya (iii) Lifestyle, particularly in the sense that they need to spend longer breaks from the family.

my friend, Its not tough to get in the officer post of indian army, its that people doesnt want to be there, and getting into IITs is far more toughest than that exam, there you are fighting with all aspirirng engineers of the nation. Talking about personalities , all top executives of the company have got that personality to lead the company, and india has developed today to attract 60 % of their revenue from the IT sector providing major services outside the nation, thats a pride they are contributing. A civilian job contributes a lot to the GDP .

Rightly said sir. Indian Army has one of the most stringent selection procedures. Clearing the writtens are in itself a daunting task leave alone the SSB & after that the medicals. Most candidates don't qualify that far. They need the best of the best so the selection has to be that way. It's not just a matter of filling posts. Also it's not at all about salary, people join Army out of sheer passion of serving the motherland. After the 6th pay commission the salaries are comparable to the corporate sector, if not more.

I can only say that being a geek can get you an IIT but to be in the Indian Army you need to have an overall personality & that's not something that everybody is blessed with.

STRICT Rules & Regulations

idea posted by C Nijagunaradhya Planning engineer, Aarvee associates

People just wanna have a casual life style with their family and friends. That doesn mean in ARMY one cannot have friends.

But the Rules and regulations need to be altered a bit. Its too long/lengthy dedication in terms of the no of years of service . Even though the facilities provided are acceptable but salary still is old.

When the whole lifestyle is going online, ex: GIS/remote sensing can play a major role, then army should be thinking of much more technologies which can reduce the pressure/risk of life.

The reasons for people not joining Indian Army may be lack of pay, risk to life, political interference etc., But I feel that, at school and college level the educational institutions are not encouraging the students. The govt should pass a GO that, each and every school compulsarly maintain a NCC batch and should develop neccesary infrastrure.

Using Army as a self interest tool.

idea posted by Kavitha Shankar Sr/Principal Coresspondent, ABC

Many people use army and other government jobs, merely a tool to fulfil their own self interest. For example, in recession time, few friends of mine joined the army not only to get a job but by getting a government job, there won't be any tension of job security. Moreover, If they leave the job and join corporate world, they will be considered as ex-army man and will get all the facility an army man gets. He also will be getting pensions which would add to his "extra income" of his corporate salary.

Actually dere r a lot of young ones wanna join army including me ho attended several SSB's bt failed evrytym b'coz of lack of desired physical standards by IA. This play a major role b'coz we've been taught tht study is evrything evn smtyms bigger than phy fitness. Hence we gt knowledge, aptitude, reasoning ability bt on the cost of our physical fitness. Also Army jobs r very demanding so dey want the bst ppl in bussiness n still smhow dey pay dem less.this add up to the problem neither they wanna lower dere standards n dey shudn't be.

Shouldn't we ask this to ourselves ??

It may sound idealistic & I am too small a person to say this but in between what we call a rat race the truth we have to admit that we are thinking of what country has going to give us whereas we all we know that amidst terrorism, naxals, Pak & all, our country is seriously facing this problem.

I don't know its our excuses of being paid low or risk of life holds correct or the spirit of those dynamic officers there at borders, who have put their lives on stake !!!!
