If you ask anyone what the needs of the Indian power sector are, they will likely say more electricity.  A few may comment more but affordable power, but very few address all the issues pertaining to Generation, Transmission and Distribution.

Availability, reliability, quality and security of power system is necessary for positive future, Planning & operation. power system needs human resources in the power engineering, also IT, staff etc., they all play unique role in developing india's power sector.

Explore renewal sources of power generation

idea posted by Amit Madhav Senior Consultant, GKC
India will necessarily need to India will necessarily need to explore renewal sources of power generation. People have very high expectations from renewable energy but it is extremely important to understand its limitations too. Electricity generation from biomass and in few cases by big grid connected wind generators is practical to some extent, but largely other renewable energy options are still no good for electricity generation. However, ‘renewable energy’ opens up huge possibilities for saving fuel. India has huge potential for exploiting the gift of nature by way of good sun, wind and rain. We can save huge amount of fuels and electricity by adopting renewable energy gadgets.

i like to support the idea but there is clear way how to use it. I like to say we do need a Generation plants installed a various site near the load area so that the problems of transmission will be reduced with the losses and management problem also and the rate also cut down. Now a days wast desposal problem is very big issue in every city , a boiler can be design to use this vest as base and run generators of small capacity to produce electricity. Every city has a water reservour to store water for drinking and other use , there we can install small hydro power station also we can use natural water falls for generating electricity also. For that we do need separate commity to think over it and we do need the R & D over all this possibilities and funding to avail cheap electricity. If anyone is having good solution or proposals please feel free to convey it.

Indian power sector is mostly dependent on coal. India has 264 billion tonnes of coal reserve out of which 101 billion tonnes are proved category. With this big inventory of coal India do not need any other source for energy. Only limitation is the quality. One should always think of  utilisation by improving technology on coal uses.To sustain the 21st century demand of power for the ever progressive nation it needs to address only the issue of uses and must go for future generations of boilers.

Honesty, Reliability, Proper use of budget, Standardized procurement of systems, Recruitment of Right candidate & Implementat

idea posted by N. NAGESHWARAN ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER, M/s. KEC INTERNATIONAL LTD. (an RPG group)

It’s really a very good subject to be dealt with but with honesty….

Power sector consists of Power Production, Transmission, Stabilization and Distribution to end clients. End client again consists of Industries & House Hold sectors. Also employing right candidate for right posts who could understand well about the system, their function, their use and their maintenance i.e. proper man management. Implementation of proper Energy Management under Uniform Law irrespective of levels.

Every one from all the sectors should work with reliability, total devotion with nil corruptions. Today no doubt India is attaining Super Power status but corruption levels at all steps are so high which interrupts the real outcome.

At Production level reliable and quality products to be used whose failure chances should be very meager. It has been seen though the budgets were released to install standard products in power plants, digesting big amounts only minimum amount used to be invested for procurement and installations which in long run give breakdowns. These break downs affect the end clients (industries) by losing their productivity and in turn affect economy of country.

The same criteria should be maintained at Transmission, Stabilization & Distribution sectors.

Also the recruitments to be done in a fair way by selecting right candidate for right post by conducting proper theoretical & practical test, in spite of recruiting candidate under pressure of MLA, MP’s and other categories.

Power produced and reaches to end clients but the Energy Billing & Bill Collection procedure to be stream lined. It should be stream lined with no category differences whether it’s a normal person or any big minister. The best way is to implement Pre-Paid system through AMR implementation.

This is suggesting because ¼th of Economy of Electricity is affected in India due to non payment of Energy Bills by these high rank citizens.

Hope the points mentioned would work out in a good way and all get awake for these in future without much delay with actions.

I support to the words of u Mr.Nageshwaran.In the present situation of India, our power sector is facing terrific problems from production to maximum utilization of power resources. The first & foremost problem is the  of lack of availability of conventional & non- conventional resources . Then comes the problems of high rate of corruption in the utilization of these resources. So as u said Sir, there should be a proper & scientific manner in recruiting employees to the power sector. Their performance as to be observed in a very systematic & specific manner in order to make the best contribution of utilization of man power to our power sector.

So I would say that our govt has to take immediate actions to improvise our power sector before we the people will have to face major problems in every aspect of our daily life.

Use IT for Asset Mangement

idea posted by SHRINATH NAYAK PROPRITOR VITAL SERVICES INC

You can preserve & increase life of assets like Transformers ETC controlling their use .

Say you can control the overloading,You can do overhauling,You can detect incepient faults early etc

Thus you can extend the life of the asset

Yes i agree with Mr. Srinath. We can use RECLOSERs on distribution line to have a record of load, variation in supply -in coming side and maintain 3years record to know why the line tripped, for how many times, for what reason etc. These datas would certainely help to rectify the base problems thus increasing the life of transformers if it is maintained with regular intervals.

Indian Power Sector Needs-Reform in Fuel

idea posted by Prashant Gupta Executive, Tata Power

In India as the Power sector is increasing day by day its consumption is also increasing. But besides all these thing like HR,Planning,IT and etc.Today the situation is becoming critical, when we talk about fuels. In our country Coal Mines are near to their end,if we go toward oil it become more expensive to generate. So we have to be make ourselves more strong to face new challenge.

On othe hand if we look around we find some other way to generate power such as wind, water, solar and carbon emitting gases such as COG,BFG,Naptha from Steel/petroleum Industries. We have to focus much in these areas so to reduce Green House Effect. This also make our Green planet more Green.

Combination of increased power generation, emphasise non-conventional power, efficient plants & efficient distribution system

idea posted by Prakash Saitwal Technical Support Manager, Aditya Birla Management Corporation P. Ltd.

Power sector needs more than one factors to be attended for change in scenario. Some of the factors will be -

1.Major plants to increase power generation many fold to match the power requirement projected for coming 25 years.

2. In view of dwindling conventional resources and environment concern, power sector should strive to increase contribution of non-conventional sources like nuclear power, solar, wind power as well as ocean power. This intiative will also be cost effective.

3. Power sector needs to optimise power factor of existing plants, to see that, presnt generated capacity is best utilized.

4. Simultaneously, power sector needs to expand distribution system and manitain high distribution grid efficiency.

5. For being profit making body, Power sector needs a very efficient system for recovering energy bills. This is particularly required, knowing the tendency of Indian politicians, who consider "free power" as one of the tool to get votes.

Utilising Indian coal

idea posted by S.Chandrasekhar DGM

India is blessed with huge quantity of coal enough to last 200+ years. But is high ash coals. We need to invest in R&D to find out a novel method of separating and utilising the ash before firing it in the boilers. It is amazing that that we spend so much energy in just transporting the coal from the mines to the plants and almost half of it is useless.

Totally agree with you here chandrashekar, there is so much of coal reserves that is there in the country, one needs to utlize them to their full potential, as said it can last long for more than 200 yrs so its a very good option for power.

IT-Necessary but not Sufficient

idea posted by Narinder Pal Singh Sales/BD Manager, Tata Power
My idea for this is IT, it is necessary but not sufficient in power sector, old system of power, where every unit of power is treated roughly similarly, cannot continue.  We intuitively recognize that different units have different costs of supply - night and day, rural or urban, peak or off-peak. But today's system cannot adequately recognize (or charge for) such differences, especially for laypersons. With flat-rate pricing for agricultural pumpsets, which consume perhaps 30% of our power, we don't even accurately know how much they use. This is where IT becomes inevitable.  A smart grid will not only be able to manage loads and consumption incentives, it will also be more nimble, robust, and reliable.

Yes singh, they must also take care of cyber security risks seriously as their ignorance may bring disastrous results. In recent years, the frequency and sophistication of cyber security attacks on global critical infrastructure has greatly increased. Cyber-security experts have been warning of the vulnerability of critical infrastructure like power, transportation and water systems to malicious hackers. Recently hackers have penetrated power systems in several regions outside the U.S. and in one case caused a power blackout affecting multiple cities.

The main need in Indian Power Sector is DSM

idea posted by sanjeeb tamuli Analyst, Feedback Infra

In Indian Power Sector Capacity Addition in Generation has always got more attention...and over the year the Generation capacity has increased, but little has been done to manage the demand side, the AT & C loss has been in higher side around 20-30% in most of the states. With the fuel crisis going up, higher cost of RE Power, we should focus on DSM and try reducing load so that optimal utlization of load can be done.

now a days we use the wasted heat in the preheater and else we can use it to generation of the vapour of some volatile liquid with melting point near to the water available and turn turbines to generate electricity.....

Solar Chimney

idea posted by S.Chandrasekhar DGM

One of the most promising ideas in the field of solar energy development has been the emergence of the Solar Chimney concept. This is a very simple concept involving the creation of large glass house (or a green house) to heat up the air beneath. Located at the centre is a tall chimney. Housed at the base of the chimney is a wind turbine. The larger the area of the green house and taller the chimney more the power generated. A pilot plant of 50 kW has been successfully operated in Spain. Why not adopt this in villages. Small 50 kW plants can be set up. It will also lead to development of anciliary industries in the villages for manufacturing the glass panels.
