It looks like Indians are more interested in social networking sites than stock markets, says a study. There are about 3.1 crore (31 million) active users on social networking sites such as Facebook, Orkut and Twitter across the country, whereas the number of Demat account holders is just 1.7 crore (17 million). The study also points out that two crore new mobile connections are taken by Indians every month.

In other words, the number of total social networking site users is twice that of the total Demat account holders. Demat accounts are mandatory for investors to trade in stocks in the country.  Interestingly, a large number of Demat account holders are non-active investors and retail investors with flagging interest in public offers and mutual funds.

The average Indian is still shying away from investing in the market... Why do you think there is a low level of penetration of investing habit in India OR Why majority of Indians say no to stock market??

Very less knowledge reagarding stock market and how it works

idea posted by Sonali Sarkar Trading Advisor, American Express

I somewhat quite agree with the study, there is a majority of population which is below 30 and with this favourable demographic dynamism  stock market are unable to penetrate where as the dynamism is being witnessed in the practice of social networking & new mobile connections, where things are pretty simple, I mean they all are using the strategy of KISS (Keep it Simple Stupid) thats why there is too much of growth, here the the whole thing is complicated for them and for many going to a bank these days is complicated stuff where one properly doesn't what to do...And also majority of people have very less knowledge regarding the stock market and how it works for that matter, and all the volatility news that they see in news media....people are staying away by having their money safe with them, and also they are pretty much satisfied with their salary that they are getting.

I support the idea that there is low penetration of investmnet in share market as most of the Indians have very less knowledge regarding the stock market. They consider it as playing gamble. On other hand it is not so simple to just put ypur savings in equity market, there is compulsion of demet account. Lot of work is needed to creat awareness and thereafter to convert into action.

I do support that lack of knowledge is one of the major reason. There are some other reasons also. A greater part of population feels that money can be doubled or trippled in short span of time. And once they taste loss they fear to invest again. There is also lack of investor education initiatives. And one of the most important reason is misguidance by some dangerous people who seems to know every thing about the market dynamics.

Now a days peoples are very proactive.I agree with this view that majority of people they don't have much more knowledge about stock market,so interest factor is zero but if it is social networking site then interest factor works in higher side.

Lack of Awareness and fear of risk

In India people have always fear so you can find people want surety whether its govt job or govt firm even if you will see regarding banking why SBI is preferable over others reliability and LIC same condition and here people are also unaware about the financial knowledge that why majority of population stays even in villages and sub urban city where investment in stock market is still a distant dream

Spare Money is rarely available to 95% of the population. They do not have knowledge as well as Zero risk taking capacity otherwise they have to sleep with empty stomach. This is the blind trooth.

Conservative approach towards investing or saving !

idea posted by Senthil Subramaniam Director

Indians Especially the people belonging to the previous generation consider or have been taught that investing in the stock market is as good as gamble or a gsme of luck. let aside the research and technical data that is being  provided. The Art of saving is widely spread in INDIA, it all starts from the talcum powder tins to masala boxes to jewels and stupid chit funds.

it is upto the coming generations to break the ice and make sure such investments like the stock, MF and other forms of refined investments are given more focus..

Yes, Social networking sites are growing .. dont know how this will impact the mental health of the upcoming youth.. we have to wait and watch... !

Yes to an extent it has to do with the savings mentality  of the older generation and the saving potential of the younger generation.

The older generation is averse to taking risks and prefer to see their savings grow in a 'nationalised bank'.(not even a private Bank).

The younger generation is caught in the fad of consumerism, flair for good things in life and one good thing I see in the younger crowd is their desire to own a property on mortgage. Obviously they have no desire or little left for savings let alone investment in stock market

Indians are having less capital to gamble

idea posted by Subroto Sarkar Freelancer, Management & Strategy Consulting

So long the majority of Indians had less surplus capital to be used in gamble. We old generation believed that stock market participation is a pure gamble. We have seen people becoming rich over night to became pauper later while playing in stock market. So we dare not take risk with our life saving as we do not want to go and stand in road. If there is any extra or surplus fund we had we try to play. But today by the grace of modern society rich middle class are growing who are earning a figure which was beyond our dream. Once these class shows success people will get confidence and take part in share market. No matter educating in this sector will change the scenario as we have seen more failure than success in share market participants,

yes i agreed. a very big part of the Indians is poor. some of them are only able to manage their minimum bare needs. and if we talk about stock market its a pure gamble. experts advice only surplus money should be invested in stocks. if one is sure that any how he/she can arrange his/her daily livelihood, only then he/she can think of investing in stocks to earn more money taking some risk.

yeh exactly subroto, the older generation used to see trading in stocks synonymous to gambling and we have heard that all our life. This is ingrained in our mind, now before investing in the market are so afraid of losing the money that even after having a dmat a/c people are skeptical to invest

Because of Indian's traditional view

idea posted by Arun Kumar K Security/ Equity Research Analyst, Thomson Reuters

Since stock market is too volatile & risky, most of the Indian investors do not prefer to invest in the stock markets. They want to be in safer side always and do not want to take risk. They traditionally prefer to invest in gold & silver because they give more security & safety. Still today there are innumerous investors in gold and silver and they do not want to invest in share market because of volatility, even though they are well aware of stock market. Indians are always at safer side which has been inherited from their father and forefather. I agree this is also because of lack of awareness programme conducted widely all over India.

Less knowledge regarding CAp market.

The Indian people are very risk averse who has a sense of mind that stock market is a gamble but they do not feel that in life there is nothing wich is not a gamble. wen a person is in business, he tooks a part of money and gambles for the acceptance of that business..,, wen he is havin a job, witohut knowing the future of the co., he speculates using his brains power the co's resources... thus, in life every fair game is a penfdent of a gamble... this must be understood by the Indian people..

Marketing by Share broking companies not enough

idea posted by V VASU Audit Manager, SUNDARAM FINANCE LIMITED
Dear Madam, Total AUM of mutual funds as on 31.05.2010 Rs. 8,03,500 Crores. This means people are investing Capital market through Mutual funds. Mutual fund growth is tremendous in the last 10 years. Direct investors to capital market is not that much because lack of awareness in share market, lack of knowledge in fundamentals of the stock movement. I think Share broking companies should educate more to the investors to increase the investors.

A large size of Indian population live below poverty line. A good majority are middle class who do not wish to risk their hard earned money in the stock market. So only a small size of the population who can afford to take risk and who can with stand loss can gamble in capital market

Stock market stuff, mutual funds, and the rest of all what you say is just not a regular Indian's cup of tea, what evr you say are borrowed investment options and ideas that can never appeal to the indian (not your metro - business indian, IIM stuff). that's why gold and real estate will always be the most prioritized way of investment, thanks to marketing, indians are taking up Insurance based investments. So it's not just that indians are poor at investing, the companies have never offerred the right product, if you keep feeding a lion milk instead of meat, the lion will choose to drink milk after some time!
