why there is a surge in women smokers lately?

I think this is the prime reason for surge in women to smoking and also stress is a factor here, but don't know how it will help them to deal with their stress by smoking, but the money in their hand will let them give a chance to buy anything and also girls think they are cool by having a cigarette in their hand. Also I think  it has to do with several Companies who running campaigns where they are targetting women into smoking, also it’s a cause of concern that literate women in sectors like business, medicine, BPO besides college girls from the higher strata of the society are getting addicted to the habit.


Also it is said that women comprise about 20 per cent of the world’s more than one billion smokers, they are a major target group for the tobacco industry, which needs to get new users hooked onto the habit.

BASICALLY NEW GENERATION AND SOME LADIES BORN AND BROUGHT UP IN METRO CITIES FEEL IT COMFORTABLE AS THEIR HUSBAND COME LATE AND THEY HAD TO KILL TIME SO THEY ARE ENGAGED IN SUCH PARTIES .NEW GENERATION IN IT SECTOR AND SOME OTHER SECTORS WHERE THEY ARE GETTING GOOD PERKS ,THEY SPENT THE MONEY IN MANY SUCH WAYS LIKE SMOKING AND CONSUMING ALCOHOL . THEY FEEL PROUD OF IT EVEN BECAUSE THE MEDIA IS ALSO SHOWING SUCH SERIAL ETC.

ALTHOUGH IT'S NOT GOOD FOR WOMEN HEALTH THERE ARE PLENTY OF ILL EFFCTS FOR THEIR FUTURE. 

We are free to do all the legal activities, Smoking is legal............so what ......enjoy the life no matter if life is shorter or become difficult later........I think girls can explain the psychology behind this trend in better perspective..........

THE ATTITUDE that the WOMEN are equal to the MEN's in every aspect & they can do everything a MAN can do.

The generation is now a days getting close to the western culture. So they are following every thing what the western culture does - the style, the aspiration, the habits, the drinking, etc etc.

Smoking is not too bad to both the genders, if in control,.

JUST A FEW THINGS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED.

1. DO NOT SMOKE IN FRONT OF FAMILY ELDERS.

2. NOT TOO EXCESSIVE SMOKING.

3. DO NOT SMOKE WHEN PREGNANT.

4. HUSBANDS & WIFE SHOULD NOT SMOKE FOR AT LEAST A MONTH BEFORE PLANNING TO GIVE BIRTH A CHILD.

As genders are getiing more equal both genders are acquiring each other's characters. Be it cloths, fashion, behavior, eyc. Men getting metrosexual and getting groomed and females acquiring otherwise male habits like smoking, going to pubs, etc. are because of this. This is the ONLY REASON!!!

I do agree that peer pressure and high income do contribute to the upsurge of smoking habits in Women but obviously it is not the only cause. It has been observed that many middle class women specially journalists, media personalities and working women from various strata succumb to the somoking practice because they feel that they are going to face the difficulties if they go for a puff and they take this as a tension/ stress buster without realizing to the harmful consequences. In order to come out from the mental tensions and pressure of the day to day activitites revolving them they think that they cangain the same strength like that of their male counterpart by having a cigarette in their hand, somewhat mental relief.

Teenage girls /middle aged women are now confronting various situations in life leading to emotional traumas because nowadays late marriage has been a fashion.They lead independent life and any kind of emotional ouotburst is being supported by increased smoking and drug addiction which they think are an easy way to surpass their bitterness for a transient relief.

Many a times situational conditions are so that a person is forced to smoke. This is conditional and pressures like staying away from home abroad, a life without care, improper fooding habits and alcoholic addiction may also increase and attract a women to smoking habits because they are in company of their male counterpart whom they see to smoke things in glory...They also want to experiment and that experimentation becomes a practice...

  Surge towards gender equality had shown women many superficial shortcuts, one of the easiest being smoking. It is being projected as a way to heroism, confidence,dare-devilry and distinction. When voluntary actions of an individual and even thoughts are controlled by media and marketing,the tobacco companies are taking the full advantages of this weakness.Needless to say about the moral support she gets from people around.

Even though we tend to compare women smokers to decreased men smokers, I strongly feel that the reason for men withdrawing from smoking is not because they understands the harm. Instead they are exposed to superior mode of addictions like drugs. At a time when men were at their peak of smoking and drinking, women had an initial reluctancy which was overcome by the presence of mock tails and beer. slowly they mastered them and got themselves promoted to their superior only-to-men items like cigerette and rums. Still women prefer drinkig white rum and vodka due to their smooth look and feel.Here also I expect a fast change towards mens-only items.

I am sure and sorry to watch this surge now to smoking and in the near future to drugs and all other mens-only areas.

it is from the past that if u have some new passion that of others u r recognised.over pressure needs a tobacco snif,eagrness of earning makes all these to happen.IN ALL WHAT I SAID IS THERE THOUGHT AND I NEVER MEANT THAT IT IS REALLY APPLICABLE.

There is absolutely no logic as why there are more women smoking. Its more of aping of the west, and deliberate pushing the fact down the throat, that women are liberated with no inhibitions.

But the idea is NOT AT ALL attractive and MOST harmful, which women are not able to realise.

smoking has become synonymous with modernity, and equality with the men in the urban crowd.

rural women have been smoking bidi's for quite a while.

more scary is the non smoking kind of tobacco abuse like gutka, paan, dentobac and snuff.

Today's woman, particularly  well off or seems to show off financially, gets into this snobbery as an illusionary measure of proclaiming Emancipation. We can say, its a mania as an  adult-man does in smoking . Be a," Roman in Rome culture- snobbery"  spoils them. The ability to withstand peer pressure goes down, more visibly, in cosmopolitan girls. Its a habit , so far, adopted by man is badly picked up by woman & is being encouragingly followed. Can we say its an MNC culture?.Let the girls decide what is what?. Because, govt. can alone restrict "Smoking" in general, irrespective of Gender. More particular reason, it can not show on Woman smoking.Woman who are suppose to live a life alien to us ape it. We can not stop it.

Any gender does`nt matter, its the main cause of individual earning and liberty of their own.

Secondly it the group or freind circle you live in and styles oneself to follw the trends of envirnment of different sides of worlds.

Therefore turned into habits and more and more addicted at loneliness.

Good debate, I feel that smoking gives a feeling of independence, girls today are getting independent and want to show their attitude.

When "individualism" becomes more important, and transgressing into socially forbidden areas are a matter of thrill and achievement, and an expression of independence, individuals tend to aberrate from norms.   Some take to the habit because of their inherent weakness to refrain.  

Hi I am not for or against on more number of women smoking lately,This should have happened long back only if they were not leaving in bigger families,the ultimate Sas Babu battle was always for reedom from bahu and control by Sas.

Today time has changed the evolution of the Mod Sas has come in where they are given them the leavy of freedom which they didnot relish.

Womenalway wanted to do all this but then the controls were with some body else on the spends and funds,today they have their own funds to manage and spend.

This is not an behavioural change ,this is an outburst of the suppressed look out of freedom and controls.

What stupid things that men do, women want to follow, thinking that by doing so they are equaling men. They think that this is woman's liberation.

This is the kind of pseudo intellect that some liberated women in the west have. These women influence other women in countries who are culturally advanced than theirs. And some women fall for these.

These women are harming and killing themselves thinking that they are advanced and sophisticated. This can be termed as insanity and stupidity.
