Its amazing to see that people are preferring underdog brands than their counterparts. When given a choice, 89 percent of the time study participants picked products whose back story included an “underdog” narrative. Companies that started off at a disadvantage – no financial backing or connections to large firms – are much more appealing to consumers than those that had a helping hand in getting where they are.

So, why do people generrally prefer underdog brands??

I believe that many underdog brands provide a motivational support to its ustomers. People when they come to know about the brand they attach themselve to the brand & are lured towards it....

The main reason is the ability of the underdog brands in a position to offer competitive prices than their counterparts with some sort sales schemes for the benefit of the dealers & customers. The dealers are also think which brands will give them better margin and so they are motivated to sell these type of brands.

There are high end products in the market who will never reduce their prices and also not offering much benefits in the form of schemes or incentives on sales to the dealers. Hence the high end products have the limited market segment with customers base, where as the underdog brands normally aims to satisfy their customers base and further they give what the customers want and in turn they take what they want. Sales plus marketing = success. Therefore , the underdog brands have very well known the pulse of the customers.

The high end products are being sold at less qty with better profit margin and have less penetration. But the underdog brands are being sold at big volume with marginal profit but have more market penetration and reach.

In a way yes. Some people prefer these due to the fact that they may get some new products which may/may not be successful but some sort of innovation to make their brand more like-able.

Because everybody consider itself as underdog at some place/stage of it's life so prefer to go with someone who is sailing in same boat.

these brands have awful capabilities to align them according to local market and they do not go with a standardized market pattern which gives them flexibility to position themselves easily and also customers can relate more to such brands as the aura they bring is from the same area/region/market. Costing being another major factor....

Under dog brands are liked by people because of the thought that an up coming brand will have a rapid progress in comparison to the established one. The established brand will rise gradually.
