The market is currently witnessing the introduction of an array of financial products revolving around women than ever before. And why not? The entire world ranging from luxe cars to premium bikes and from super luxury watches to sleek laptops – seems to be vying for the attention of the modern world's most discerning customers, ie. working women.

But does it mean they need exclusive financial product, why?

it is just but a marketting gimmick only. i could not see any product which doesnot revolve around the bread winner. The working woman number is now increasing and there should be no different attitude if the bread winner be a lady.

Dear Aditya, there is no question of sympathy towrd womens specific needs, In insurance we have already covered all risk and gender related modelities when we fill proposal form for insurance and when we underwrite the same , even our (almost every insurance companies)actuaries aleardy comes with spl. mortality tables etc. and same is inbuilt in normal product.

Changing needs and requirements

Yes feel definitely they require exclusive financial products. Their social, family and personal needs are changing with their changing activities. Therefore, products should also be modified according to their needs as it is a potentially large market.

Yes Maria is right and today there are more number of women in organization...so their needs are different from men..and today there is need of products in Insurance which are targetting women...so this is a very nice thought, which needs to be turned into action as soon as possible...

The percentage of women in the workforce in 2004 was approx 17% but this percentage is improving as more and more women are entering the workforce, the needs of women are very different from that of men. Yes financial products need to be designed keeping in mind the various needs of a women.

I dont see anything more than a new marketing technique. Because, all options are already available in investment world to suit every individual need wheather they are men. women, conservative, agressive etc

Change in work ethics environment and social values

idea posted by Aditya Sharma Insurance Advisor/Analyst, LIC OF INDIA, ICICI LOMBARD

As the times are changing work ethics are also changing. Till now our world is governed by predominantly by men. So in the changing work ethics women need protection and encouragement. The environment is also changing not only physically but work wise and so also the social values. We need to address all these things. So, if the products designed by the companies are meeting the changing requirement of today than companies will have an edge over the other companies. The women client will increase. Like HDFC Standard Life and all companies have children exclusive plans. Why they can't have women exclusive plans. They are also a big part of our population. And should also have equal opportunities and ways to invest.

O.K. some of you are calling it a marketing gimmick. Though it is not. But  even if we say o.k. than we should understand that in Marketing gimmicks only work. Plane products might work or might not work but there is a high degree of chances that gimmicks will work. And we are talking of Insurance as business than we should make use of gimmicks as you say. thought it is not. It is completely different product that we are thinking about while giving women exlusive attention.

Mr. Dushyant Hada, probabaly you might be more aware of the nitty gritty's of the various products of the various companies. Your might be right when you say that actuaries have designed tables according to the needs of the women. But here we are talkig of women specific products. For example if there is a product which gives some funds in case of miscarriage or if all the expances of pregnancy are covered . If there is a product which gives wider protection to women in case there is a gyneacological (check the spelling) disorder. Work related stress is also different in males and females. If there is product which gives them protection for that than that also will be a welcome idea. Here we are only thinking of not only giving protection but also covering a part of a population which is not given full attention so to say. If you will give extra attention to them than that would be a selling proposition. And by designing that product you will attend to them. They will feel more honoured.

It is not a marketing gimmick, but an altogether new segment. However, the initiative of women banking needs adequate marketing. Every woman has financial needs, irrespective of whether she is a working woman and/or a homemaker. In a majority of Indian homes, women are the decision makers on many aspects. So it makes economic sense for banks to try and entice them with products tailored to suit their needs. Every piece of the banking package needs to reflect the unique way in which women view personal finance. Products like women’s credit cards, savings accounts for women, women-specific insurance products, non-collateralised loans for women entrepreneurs. And sops include easy repayment facilities, softer interest rates and inclusion in the priority sector category is a way to go..........

It's a matter of customer needs and changing environment

idea posted by Oleg Head/VP/GM-Private Equity/Hedge Fund/VC, Fronteza

Actually, each and every financial solution and product is developed with keeping specifics of the targeted customers and their needs in mind, as well as specifics of the environment, where they live and work. Nowadays, there are a lot of solutions and products available on the market, which cover different risk levels, investment strategies and customer needs. Also, product customization or targeting approach provides us with an ability to incorporate into the financial product adjustable options that will allow us to offer solutions adapted to the customer's needs and expectations. For the purpose of profit, opportunity and performance analysis we can group products into different categories: for men, for women, for pets, for small biz, for private biz etc. Whatever customer's group we serve, we can define the relevant portfolios for analysis purposes. Also we use this to market our solution or product, i.e. we use targeting approach. So, I do not think we should talk about whether we need to develop exclusive products, but we should talk about how to customize existing products or develop new products, driven by changing customer needs and economic environment. Also, the word "exclusive" means "high cost", isn't it?

Women (with emowerment)as a new customer segment having purchasing power and influence

idea posted by Jairam Gopalan Aiyer CEO/MD/Director Writer www.insuranceworld.co.in, Ajvmm Creative Solutions

Women have always been half of mankind, more or less. The Cultures which have accepted this fact have a better environment for children and economically.

For insurance, money or earnings are an important Criterion; women have started earning; have their own identity and have started carving a place in the SUN.

In fact, many women have decided " NOT TO GET MARRIED" and still have adopted "Children", which speaks volume about their level of confidence and empowerment.

It is a very good development; as far as my personal view is concerned;it is Democratic,Responsible and Mature.

Uniqueness of needs/wants and demands of Women

idea posted by DEVRANJAN DASH Zonal Marketing Manager, ICICI Bank

Women are different from men as per the law of nature.

Since women and men as two genders are different from each other hence have their unique identity, nature, behaviour, strengths, weakness, behaviourial pattern etc....

Hence it is imperative to have products i.e. financial products that addresses this uniqueness and hence satisfies the needs wants and demands.

There cannot be one size fits all financial product and that won't appreciate the difference and uniqueness of each gender.

From a insurance prespective I'll say that an insurance product that takes care of the financial needs of the female gender by taking into consideration their unique health requirements and social requirements will definitely go a long way is striking a chord with this gender.

Great Idea Contest guys & really wonderful insights. Keep it up Meena for initiating it...More and more women are today becoming financially independent. Also, many of them have now become bread earners for their family, with both men and women contributing equally to family income and lifestyle. And yes, planning for women requires taking into account various additional parameters. They require specific financial products with more flexible and security features. Thus, if the various types of loan schemes are targeted at their changing financial requirements, some investment schemes try to inculcate in them the habit of investing, while women-specific bank accounts and credit cards look for meeting their lifestyle needs......
