In my opinion Wind mills can also generate the same amount of electricity as hydro electricity provides. Wind mills are more profitable than hydro electricity in many ways. But people all around the world does not try out for the alternative electricity providers rather than stick to the Hydro electricity production.

what could be the reasons?let us discuss here.

Inconsistent

idea posted by Vivek Singh Project Manager, L&T

I understand that the source is not perennial. The intensity of wind changes from time to time in a year which affects power production.

Defining the area for Windmill project it self a tedious task... not all areas suits.. the area required to build this project is high... also the wind is not consistent all through the year

the lack of popularity of wind mills is mainly because of the inconsistent flow of wind...also wind direction changes time by time..in some countries the flow of wind is also not that fast.

Can try off shore and near shore options with higher load potential due to the lower surface roughness of water, but the installation cost is very high.

Peoples interest towards Hydro electricity

As per my idea I feel Wind mills are not prefered because of the huge popularity of dam construction around the world. The advantages of Hydro electricity production to people diminishes the scope of switching to Wind mills for electricity production.

Capacity utilisation of wind mill is very poor like 15 to 25 % hence ROI is difficult.Other wise this is a brilliant source of power as wind is always getting wasted if not used.

The same can be more useful if Industrialists do sponsor such wind mills and wheel the power to their own industry through SEB Grids if possible .

It is very popular in Gujarat state.

Hi Vinnet,

i think people dont hate to choose wind energy. its only the government polich which makes the difference. For eg. if govenrment decides to go for Hydro electricity, then it could carry out land acquistion on a full swing, where it is the very difficult part for wind energy sector. like this lot of difficulties which makes Wind Energy to sound less than Hydro.

Hydro are not constructed exclusively

Hydro generation are not built for generation alone in most of the cases.

It is an offshoot of the primary purpose of irrigation.

All government thinking in earlier years are more for agriculture, but it is now changing and more wind generation is supported by govt.

In India tamilnadu has more wind generator installed and installed capacity exceeded 3600MW.

It is true that wind comes after hydro, but it is changing nowadays.

Yes it is right. What we use to call them is "multi purpose projects". This keeps the cost of production of power less.

Lack of awareness, Government support / regulatory instruments and few committed experts ...

It is true that the country (India) has vast potential in Wind Mills and yet countries in Europe like Denmark, Spain, Portugal and others are out performing India ...

The reasons, I feel are lack of awareness, Government support in providing infra structural initiative as compared to Hydro-electric since Hydro is more popular over the decades with availability of expertise in large number and Renewable / Non-Conventional Energy Wind Energy will take time to become popular !

Along with the above, there are few committed installation experts available, who can take care of maintenance, transmission and steady generating output due to fluctuating wind speeds / velocity etc.

I am not sure whether cost of installation of Wind Mills is cheaper, but Hydro - electric may be more steady and unit cost of generated electricity may be less than Wind mills; but all these need to be looked at and worked out afresh more pragmatically keeping in view the potential and making it more viable, economic and cheap and also greater control in managing the maintenance, transmission and usage especially in areas where there is lack of water or river or canal source like Rajasthan, Gujarat, MP, Karnataka and other hilly regions of east and north etc.

Also, I believe both Hydro and Wind power may be tapped / harnessed in combination according to the availability of suitable corresponding sites in different regions especially for small power plants to ease / solve the Power situation

WIND MILL

SINCE WINDMILL CAN WORK WHERE THE WIND PRESSURE IS HIGH ,HENCE THEY ARE BEING ESTABLISHED IN SELECTED AREA,FURTHER THE PROJECT IS VERY COSTLY ,REQUIRED MORE AREA RATHER VOLUME ,HENCE IT CAN BE DEVELOPED IN BIG EMPTY AREA,AT THE TOP OF SOME HILL OR PLATO.
