How many times have we flipped through the radio channels on our commute home only to discover through a "late breaking news bulletin" that yet another individual's anger has turned to rage and they are shooting employees and supervisors at their prior place of employment?

No company is immune to previous or current employees who have decided to act on their anger in an unhealthy manner. We live in a high stress, fast paced world with constant demands places on us at work, in our home and in our cars.

So, how to manage rage at workplace??

Identify who is angry & why

Train your managers and employees to identify the behaviors that can signal an anger challenged co-worker and have a positive system that will report these behaviors to management for further investigation. Do not wait.

Interview reporting staff to determine whether indications warrant further review. Interview subject to determine why they may be angry at work. Offer positive solutions for individual stress and anger control or refer to EAP if appropriate and available.

Never deal with a person who is in rage at that point itself. Give him/her the time and the dignity to climb down and calm down. That gives you time to find out who/why/what/how etc. Then deal with it a professional manner first to difuse the sr=tress levels and then solve the problem. Merely identifying how andwho and why wont help you. Work out a possible solution and see if the other person is interested in working with you to resolve it. As a last resort escalate the problem to a higher level professionally to get resolution.

You r right Meena the first step is to identify who is angry & why... Besides that pressure due to change should be handled properly. Learn how to manage your organizations transitions and help your executives and employees survive the stress at work. This will prevent problems and create an environment where positive performance can thrive.

Leadership comes from the top down and must address the issues with resolve. If anger is inbred in an organization's leaders this becomes a difficult but important concern. The costs of anger are too high, in the long run, for an organization to be most productive and long standing.

Retention of key personnel becomes an issue, if the leadership creates a culture that tolerates, or encourages, anger in the work place. Legal issues will also become an issue that cuts profits and productivity.
