13-Year-Old Looks at Trees, Makes Solar Power Breakthrough

Aidan Dwyer did a much better job on his 7th grade science project than any of us. While on a wintertime hike in the Catskills, he noticed the branches of trees held a spiral pattern as they ascended. He wondered if that could possibly serve some purpose, looked into it, and learned about the Fibonacci sequence, which is a mathematical way of describing a spiral. Then he studied tree branches more closely and found their leaves adhered to the sequence. Then he figured out that if he arranged solar panels the way an oak tree arranged its leaves, they were 20 to 50 percent more efficient than the standard straight-line solar arrays. That is why the American Museum of Natural History gave him a Young Naturalist award, and published his findings on its website. His write-up concludes:

The tree design takes up less room than flat-panel arrays and works in spots that don't have a full southern view. It collects more sunlight in winter. Shade and bad weather like snow don't hurt it because the panels are not flat. It even looks nicer because it looks like a tree. A design like this may work better in urban areas where space and direct sunlight can be hard to find.

Really great observation. All energies and forces of Nature are seen in strongest form while spiralling, be it in winds or water( Tornado,Hurricane)and now even solar energy. Whirl in revers, Spirals are multi dimensional hence cover more area and effect of energy is multifolds. Congratulations Aidan Dwyer and thank you Manish.

Intelligent boy, I didn't even know what the Fibonacci sequence until now.  I just have gone through it.  For the benefit of other friends here I would like to share the information gathered from google about Fibonacci sequence. 
In mathematics, the Fibonacci numbers are the numbers in the following integer sequence:
0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89,144 and so on 
  
By definition, the first two Fibonacci numbers are 0 and 1, and each subsequent number is the sum of the previous two.



In mathematical terms, the sequence Fn of Fibonacci numbers is defined by the recurrence relation
 
Fn = Fn-1+Fn-2

with seed values
 Fo=0 and F1 = 1

a).There is NO need for experts from Solar PV cells on the judging panel because this is NOT a brand new invention. This is an improvement of an existing stuff.

b).All this kid did was to improve the efficiency of Solar Panel. It may look like a small achievement and the award may look like that it was "simply" given but it is not. It is a good breakthrough for such a young mind and it ought to be awarded. Most inventions and improvements are extremely simple phenomenon.

MURALIDHARANJI, you have rightly pointed out that the American Museum of Natural History and eminent biologists, ornithologists, zoologists, educationists, geologists, and the journalists Conferred the Award to Aidan Dwyer.

There is no Physicist(With a Knowledge of Solar PV Cells) in the Panel, the award was conferred simply because the model was shaped as Tree/Leaves & Majority of the Jurists being Biologists, emotionally awarded the 7th Standard Kid Aidan Dwyer.......

Manish, there are two points that I would like to make on Mr. Khaitan's comment.  (1) From the perspective of commercial viability of the innovation, I agree, this is very difficult apply as such in the rudimentary format, as the number of new technologies, such as, thin film solar cells as against normal photo-voltaic cells, parabolic solar concentrators, nano-solar technologies are really driving commercial entities.  In this context, Mr. Khaitan is right that the fibonacci model may not be as effective as the above technology marvels heralding the commercial entities, therefore, requiring further research and refinement.  (2)  As far as the innovation is concerned, the award is conferred to the 13-year lad by an eminent body, i.e., American Museum of Natural History, and the jurists who conferred this "Young Naturalist Award" to this kid (Aidan Dwyer) are none other than from among the communities of eminent biologists, ornithologists, zoologists, educationists, geologists, and the journalists.  Therefore, Aidan Dwyer's finding will certainly have finer points and out-rightly rejecting this model requires evidences and proofs to counter the argument.

Dear Manish, Great Site Indeed...... I know about Fibonacci patterns & I am working on Solar PV Cells. Presently, Solar Tracking Systems are attached with the Solar Panels to rotate & align them with the Sun(Light) to get maximum Output(Electricity)..... There is no role of Spiral Orientation in Commercial Scale......

So far Aidan Dwyer is concerned, he is quite Talented, I am surprised, how could he think of Fibonacci patterns....... I wish him all success in his life....

I reject this "13-Year-Old.... Solar Power Breakthrough" story Completely, Electricity Generated by Solar Cells depends on the Total Area Exposed to Sun Light, it does not depend How the Solar Cells are Oriented - In Rows or Spiral...

Some Journalist having no Scientific background made this News by Mistake.... This is quite absurd, This News has no Science Content at all...

I admit, Nature has everything, we should all follow Nature..... Issac Newton followed Nature & gave us Knowledge of Gravitation, Light & so many things... All scientists should follow Nature... but at the same time we should also reject all nonsense.....

Really great! It proves that the brain of a person if used properly can prove miracles. It also proves that only degree holders of doctoral scholars cannot be experts in comparison to a mere 7th grade student, if their brain is not innovative and not used in right direction.
