A quick look at the vote shares of the many contenders in the 15th Lok Sabha elections tells us quite a different story from the one told about the United Progressive Alliance’s landslide victory. Not only have the national parties not increased their vote shares nationally, it appears that very small local players in many states have played a determining role in the Congress’ victory by splitting the opposition vote.

The Congress has increased its total vote share by 1.99 percent but the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) vote share has decreased by 3.32 percent. The combined vote share of the two main national parties has actually decreased by 1.33 percent (from 48.69 percent to 47.36 percent). This seriously tempers the claim of the resurgence of national parties to the detriment of regional ones.

The two national parties have sometimes won seats where they have lost votes and lost seats where they have increased their vote share. There is nothing new in this, but it often blurs the reading and understanding of the social and political processes at work behind election results.

The BJP’s vote share has decreased in 21 states, including in states where it has increased its number of seats - Jharkhand, Bihar and Gujarat. The only two states where the BJP has actually increased its vote share are Himachal Pradesh (+5.34 percent) and Karnataka (+6.86 percent).

In terms of vote share, the Congress did better than in 2004 in 16 States, including states where it has performed badly in terms of seats (Bihar, +6.43 percent). In Maharashtra, the Congress lost four percent of its vote share; in Orissa, it bagged four more seats than in 2004 while losing 7.68 percent of the vote share; and in Manipur, it lost a seat despite a whopping 18.08 percent increase in vote share.

The Congress performed particularly well in Punjab (+11.06 percent), Rajasthan (+5.77 percent), Uttar Pradesh (+6.21 percent) and Arunachal Pradesh (+41.15 percent).

Well, according to me the best thing happened is we have returned back to almost two party democracy. All those regional parties with myopic agenda and blackmailng tendencies, time n again and that arrogant creature, called Left is left by the public to hiver in the cold. Congress also seems to have learnt the lession and have decided not to give any ministerisal birth to Lalu, Mulalyam, Mayavati etc....it does not require an outside support either from the left. So, now Manmohan Singh who has the vision of the nation, and is given sufficent authority to activate that vision into action, will and can do the wonders. One more thing that has happend for the betterment of the nation and Manmohan Singh that those unruly elements from within Congress, shall also either will be weeded out or they will learn to shut up....

Congress has done wisely in going alone in some States.
Like I mentioned in one of my earlier postings, it is important to have polairization of National Parties viz, BJP, Congress and Communists, in the wider interest of the country. The regional parties are important and they should remain active in the governance of States and shall have adequate number of representatives in Parliament.

There shall be post poll aliances between the Regional aprties and National parties. It should be based on an understanding that majority of Lok Sabha seats are given for the National party supported by the Reginal party in Lok Sabha elections and the other way around in the Assembly elections.
it is also important that National parties in the Central Government to take charge of portfolios of national importance so as to have equittable distrbuiton of growth plans, instead of getting bogged by partisan local interests.

The recently concluded elections are the eye openers. The results were unexpected. However it is the peoples idea to bring back one party with one strong opposition. This is the sign of healthy democracy. However I feel some black mailers who during the poll compaigns were planning to black mail the major party to grab berths have learnt their lessons of their lives. Still Mr. Singh (of course with the help of Party president) must select the ministries very carefully and should not bow down to the supporters who have been adopting the black mailing tacticts to put their hands on the Chairs of Honour without qualifications of any nature, but only to see that how their near and dears are made minsters. Wrong steps at this stage may put the party back again in the next election. Be careful Mr. Singh......

Dear Shahid...

Hasmukh has rightly said that the best thing is we have returned back to two party democracy......I was shocked with the majority received by UPA in some places. And I feel with less dependence on allies UPA govt will be able to push reforms faster and contain the impact of global slowdown on economy. It should also create an environment to attract more FDI, which in turn will boost growth. Government should also promote private investment in infrastructure. Increase in investment in manufacturing will ensure employment generation and higher growth.....
