Bangalore: Sujatha Kaverappa, a 18 years old domestic help, is going to represent the domestic child labourers at International Labour Organization (ILO) conference in Geneva, which is to be held from June 7 to 14. Sujatha works in Gowpyatha Makkala Kendra,a shelter home for rescued child domestic workers, reports Senthalir S for Times of India.

Sujatha, who wanted to be a government employee, hails from a poor family in Huskur village. After spending tough time as a domestic help in Marathalli, she approached Sister Nisha from Karnataka Domestic Workers Movement for help. Currently, she spends her time learning English and cooking for the children in Gowpyatha Makkala Kendra.

This is the first time that she is going out of Bangalore. She will talk about her experience as a domestic help and the sufferings of child domestic workers, said Sujatha to TOI. Currently, she is earning Rs. 3,500 every month.

Sujatha is getting support from the Karnataka Domestic Workers Movement and will meet the representatives of governments, trade unions and employers from across the world to vote for the adoption of a new ILO convention on domestic work. She will also meet child domestic workers from Peru and Togo. It is the British NGOs Anti-Slavery International and Children Unite which has organized the visit.

Its indeed a honour for the our State for such representation at the International level. I would like to know more about the girl. It would be great if you can provide details on how to access her. I am interested to do a story on her achievements and experiences for the E-Journal 'Baalavani' being published by the State Resource Centre on Child Labour, Department of Labour, Government of Karnataka.
