This is the amount of information, as of 2007, that researchers calculate humankind is able to store. While that’s about 300 times the number of grains of sand in the world, it’s still less than 1% of the information that is stored in all the DNA molecules in a human being. The data emerged from study in Friday’s edition of ‘Science’ that calculated the world’s total technological capacity or the information humankind is able to store, communicate and compute. The accompanying graphics show how worldwide computing capacity grew 58% every year between 1986 and 2007, shifting, for instance, from video cassette storage to computer hard drives. Tellingly, In 1986, four in 10 bytes of stored information dedicated for computational purposes were present in pocket calculators. In 2007, this was almost wholly replaced by videogame consoles, supercomputers and mobile phones.
