A common language for the nation is must.

Every country has its own national language. More than anything it helps to integrate the people.  Hindi which is the language of the majority population is the national language of India.

However, Hindi is yet to gain popularity in regions that have its own dialect. People in every region are proud of their language, most of which are really very rich in vocabulary and literature. In fact the States were formed based on linguistic differentiations. So far so good. Wisdom of those who facilitated it deserve much praise as integration within the region could be realized with that.

It shall be possible to integrate the national language without hurting sentiments of people in non-Hindi speaking regions. Teaching of the national language is already a statuatory requirment. To achieve any difficult task, many compromises are needed on both sides.  For Hindi to be fully acceptable to every one, some amount of reformation is required.

One aspect is that Hindi does not have the concept of neutral gender which is a glaring anomaly. Others would find it difficult to learn the right gender of  lifeless objects that have no gender associated to it in other languages. To certain extent, this anomaly restrict people to use Hindi with confidence.

It is also necessary to enlarge the vocabulary by adopting words from other regional languages and  numerals and numbers etc. used in English need to be adopted.

It is neither practical nor logical to educate the majority mass which constitute 90% of the population of India using English as the media of instruction. English could be taught as optional language. The basic education in every region should be in the local language. Then a common language is required to interact between people of different regions of the country. There is no sense in saying that English should be the medium for that. It can be only Hindi.

In that matter is not English the most untenable language of all for the folloing reasons: -

-  Less number of alphabets compared to other languages.

-  The phonetics of the letters is different in identifying it individually from how it is   pronounced when it is read and spoken literally.

-  Many words are not pronounced as spelt.

-  Unlike in other languages, need of vowels to give phonetic change by combining it with letters with no uniformly defined rules, which add to complicate the language.

-    The alphabets used as vowels are also used independently as letters/consonents to form words adding to the confusion.

-    Same alphabet such as  c, g, j, the five vowels, combinations ch, sh, sch, psy, kn,  and many  such have totally different phonetics individually and in its combined forms.

-   Usage of plural verb form for singular nouns like in “I do, He does” etc  and vice versa  is nothing but nonsense.

-    To make a word singular to plural, the letters added to the word do not follow any  pattern.   Eg: Pencils /Mangoes, man / men, child /children, fly/flea, knife/knives etc,. etc.

-    The pronunciation of words as expected by the English language pundits can come only by practice and not by following any general rule book, and that too vary from country to country.

The list can go on. There are many more anomalies in English language making it difficult to master by using ones common sense. But for the happening of colonialization, it would have been looked down as an uncouth language compared to German, French, Latin, Sanscrit, Arabic etc.

In spite of all these and many more weird facts, the pundits in English language are very in-tolerant to violation of any of these indefinable and unwritten rules that do not follow any rule book for people to learn.

In comparison, most of the Indian languages are far more straight forward and rich.  In the interest of the nation, the Hindi speaking population shall be prepared to adopt a give and take policy by scrapping the gender forms for lifeless objects and materials so as to make the language easier and acceptable by all.

This does not mean that one should not learn English and different languages other than their mother tongue and the national language. Learning of English is must for developing countries whose growth depends on becoming active partners in globalization. The point is that learning Hindi is much easier than mastering faultless English, and in striving to do so, one also share the vision of this great nation.

Learning of English and other foreign languages shall also form part of cariccula as part of diversified educational scope. The fact is that we were forced to learn other's language as we were dependent on them for many things. Things are changing and the day is not far when others will find it necessary to learn our language for them to sustain. Meanwhile we sould also strive to make our national language fit for that.

Mr. Kamekish i agree with you that a single common language is not possible in such a vast and diversified country like india but i would not agree with you when you say that english is the language that has given us money, status or power. Its just the perception of people, i don't think that english language in any way is superior to hindi or for that matter any other indian language.I agree that english is the global language because of which we need to be familiar with it but it is certainly not the language that has made us successful the way we are.

Most of the countries and their people follow thisand they feel proud in using their national language. We have one great language HINDI in every corner of our country there are people who understand this language and if it is made compulsery in schools as second / third language I think this problem will be sorted out and we can be the proud Hindi speaking people.
What you say guys????

The point I want to pursue is: Having the States already formed in the basis of the Language of the majority in the State, one common language is necessary for the common people to interact freely while they are outside their State. It is neither logical nor practical, but absurd to assume that English is the right language for that.

Hindi being he language of the majority in this country, naturally it is the right choice. Is it not on the same logic that English is necessary for us to interact with people in other parts of the world?
Therefore, the three language policy as is being adopted now is the right approach. The point here is that a working level knowledge of Hindi will help to quicken the national integration process and therefore, should be taken more seriously by every State education department.
Keeping this in view, certain reforms as mentioned in the posting shall be done in Hindi to make it more accommodative and versatile.

One with the right vision can see that the days are not far of when jobs opportunities abroad will vanish and job seekers from abroad start looking to India for jobs. India need to prepare and make ourselves ready to present Hindi as our national language which shall then become obligatory for the people in other countries to learn it.

Hi Abraham,
Its a good idea to have one common language to bring pool of people together.Hindi can be good for India. But to connect to majority of world English is essential. So it is better to have English also.
To keep the local tradition, art, folklore we need local language as well. So its best to have local language .
In my opinion one must learn local language, National language(Hindi) & English .
Cheers
Anil
Best Regards

Your idea is very good.Is it possible in india?
If you go after every one km.of journey you will see change in language of the people.
After sixty years of independence no politician has tried to minimise this gap of communication among the people, instead they only deposited indian wealth in swiss bank. These politicians will not allow to do this as they afraid of loosing their vote bank.

A lingua franca is needed. No question about it. The question is Which language will unify all? And why a lingua franca only for India, why not a lingua franca for the world. And can any other language, besides English, be a global lingua franca?

Hi Abraham,

Its a nice one but one contradiction. Hindi is not a national Language. it is the first union language comes along with 22 other languages. English is the communication language that connects the states with center. When there is a national language for a country there will not be any communication language or any others.

Every statement given by the country will be in its national language. But in our even the Rupee has implemented all union languages (value of rupee will be printed) and the communication language will be printed in Big

With referenc to the comment of Mr.Kamlesh, please allow me to add that in a democratic nation of 1.1 billion people, the will of the majority need to be respected. English learning would be accessible and affordable to only leass than 10 percent of the population. Can we say that the remaining 90 percent need not be integrated into the fabric of the nation. A common language helps to knit this fabric and hold it together. Is not Hindi the medium of interaction between the working class of non-Hindi speaking states, while they happen to be in other regions.
The Biblical story of what happened to the the people who spoke same language making the tower of Babel is a typical example; "God confused their language, causing them to speak different languages so they would not understand each other and so had to abandon the construction and got scattered all over the face of the earth"
Language is the unifying force. In order to progress we need to have a wholistic approach, growing beyond regionistic interests.

"Those who speak the same language are joined to each other by a multitude of invisible bonds by nature herself, long before any human art begins; they understand each other and have the power of continuing to make themselves understood more and more clearly; they belong together and are by nature one and an inseparable whole. Such a whole, if it wishes to absorb and mingle with itself any other people of different descent and language, cannot do so without itself becoming confused, in the beginning at any rate, and violently disturbing the even progress of its culture".

While I agree that there should be a common language for a nation...it does not stop there. It must be highlighted that English language is used globally and as far as I understand and personally know in India this language is widely used and well too....maybe it is even compulsory in schools.
Indians will say HINDI is the best language, englishmen will say english, the French will say french, Spaniards will say spanish and the list goes on.

As a word of caution to the writer of this insight..I beg to differ when you say and I quote "The point is that mastering Hindi is much easier than learning English....." I am from an english speaking country and studied french and spanish...hindi was not taught in school even though half of our country is made up of Indian origins...but was taught at private lessons. Sad to say I did not find Hindi as an easy language to study or by now I might have been speaking better hindi than the Indians from India. However, I now deeply regret that I did not study this great language when I was younger....and worse for me was when I was in India approx..6 years ago I felt so left out when I could not converse in Hindi.

India's Unavoidable fact is "Unity in Diversity".Sanskrit(Common Language Denominator of most of all the Indian Languages) can be Single Common National Language.
May it is myth or fact of being polyglot is strengthening logical side of mind. That is one of the reason we Indians are flexible/stronger in learning any new science

"A common language for nation is must" is a very old and conservative statement. I personally feel that this statement needs correction.

English is the language which has given status, money and future to the country like India. English should be made compulsory and must be taught to every Indians.

In broad perspective, because of the growth of language, English should be considered as global language.

As such other languages are dying its own death. and they must be allowed to die peacefully and respectfully.

While we advocate the need for one national language, today, the people of the world use more than 6,000 different languages and innumerable dialects. The unity is gone. We no longer understand each other.

However, many linguists believe that we actually do speak one language. While words are important, they're just the beginning. To linguists, real language is grammar, the structure that every language is built on.Therefore one language brings unity, and the in an India with so many diverse cultures and religions, one language means one India.

Languages are always flexible to accept the changes and new words from other languages. As in English some of the words are taken from Sanskrit, And it is also said that Sanskrit is the mother of all languages of the world.

It's very true one nation should have one language for conversation. But here when we will start discussion about this, the main problem comes out is called my region, my area, my language. In India...we never ever can think that we could have only one language. As we our divided in regions, and religions.

We were never on same platform and I don't find any clue for future to be on one.
