Using a Scheduling Package / Scheduling software for scheduling is same as Managing the Project - This is a common misconception.
In reality, Project Management involves much more - Managing stake holders, team members vendors , risks, scope, cost, time, Quality etc.
Project Schedule is as good as data entered in the MS Project/any other Scheduling Package.
A. Cant determine the best no. of the people to assign to activity to yield best results.
B. Cant determine the skill level of resources needed to perform activities.C. Cant Help team synergy, morale or Quality
D. Cant Determine Resources Interaction ie, which resources will gel / work well
together
E. Doesnt Replace need for Communication.
Each of the above mentioned points is something the Project Manager should address. A Project Management scheduling package will not do everything.
The Bottom line is although there are lot of Tools in the market available for Scheduling/generating various SPC (Statistical Process Control) Outputs . Ultimately its the data that we feed in which matters, if the data is Junk, Tool O/p will be junk. Hence the Project Manager should ensure absolute control over the project.
