A  LESSON  FOR  ALL OF US  TO  LEARN

Speaking about perfection..... – Japanese attitude!!!!

Apparently the computer giant IBM decided to have some parts
manufactured in Japan as a trial project. In the specifications, they
set out that they will accept only three defective parts per 10,000.
When the delivery came in there was an accompanying letter.
'We, Japanese people, had a hard time understanding business North
American practices.
But the three defective parts per 10,000 have been separately
manufactured and have been included in the consignment in a separate
packaging clearly mentioned ' defective pieces as required, not for
use'. Hope this pleases you.'

WHAT DO YOU SAY, FRIENDS?

Thank you very much for the referral Mr.Nitin M Aras, and it is really wonderful sharing of information on Japanese attitude in quality management and high precision. In fact it is a lesson for all and we should have this taste for maintaining perfection in manufacturing quality products.

That used to be the Japanese Philosophy of manufacturing, i.e. 100% perfection. But that used to be their Philosophy in the past.

Now check this,

http://english.ruvr.ru/2010/01/22/3784926.html [Toyota to withdraw faulty cars] and this,

http://story.irishsun.com/index.php/ct/9/cid/3a8a80d6f705f8cc/id/624275/cs/1/ [Toyota withdraws Lexus model from world buyers].

They used to be scrupulous about quality when they used to make everything from the Japanese Soil. But, this all started to end once they started establishing their manufacturing facilities in the US and elsewhere.

Its good to know that they pay so much attention towards the quality management but having siad that if u look at the recent toyata and sony incident where they called all their defective products shows that no one is perfect

Dear Nitin, With so much focus on indigeneous manufacturing of telecom equipment and software in India, let us hope that ITI will go throug major change in quality of products, from the days when 10% TO 15% of digital PCBs they supplied were defective. Let us wait and see.

Mr. Nitin,
Someone please also send this to our management friends in "ITI".

Incidentally, this reminds me of an incident while I was working with Japanese Engineers in a project long time ago.
During the project execution, the Japanese installation Engineer committed some technical error which was not of much adverse consequecne, but was just not confirming to the standard installation practice.

Being manager for acceptance testing of the project, when I pointed out this to the Japanese Project Manager, he almost fainted and we had to seek medical aid. The first thing he did when he returned back was to get the whole thing redone, stopping all other work for next two days.
They were so meticulous about cleanliness, to the extent that if they find a hair anywhere in the rooms, they use to pick it up, wrap in a tissue paper and put it in the waste paper basket.
There are so many things we need to learn from them, the one thing I find most important is that they take the work to their heart, as dear as how we feel about our mother.

.I think the idea generated from the requirement of after sales service. They can manufacture 100% with out any defects, but to maintain the service sector, the concept of 3 pcs defective is intentionally created.

I think its language problem. IBM said ONLY 3 pieces per 10000. That was the tolerance (acceptable) limit set out by IBM. Poor Japanese waisted valuable resources to manufacture 3 defective peicese....:) Jokes apart it is really a good one... and shows why "Made in Japan" tag is valued so much !
