6 Signs Your Email Campaigns Are Worse For Wear
A strong email marketing campaign can be a small business owner’s ace in the hole. Email marketing gives you the opportunity to reach a large and diverse audience, and is relatively inexpensive when compared to other forms of marketing like T.V. or radio.
What email marketing does take is time. It takes time to build an email list, to come up with new and interesting content - not to mention the boost in sales you’ll get if the campaign is successful.
But how can you tell? What are the signs that point to an email campaign that is in desperate need of a shot in the arm?
Look no further - here is a list of 6 signs that could mean your email marketing campaign has seen better days.
No Change In Sales
Have you noticed an increase in sales since you began your most recent campaign? If the answer is no, then it’s important that you find out why. Is there something missing from your campaign, or have you overloaded your audience with too much information?
Keep in mind that email marketing takes time, you can't expect to see drastic change in your sales right away. But if you’ve been marketing for awhile and haven’t seen a change - it’s time to take a closer look.
Subscribers
Another telltale sign of a weak email campaign is the absence of new subscribers. When it comes to email marketing, the name of the game is volume. You need to send as many emails as possible to get the maximum response. If new people aren’t signing up for your newsletters and marketing emails that can mean only one thing - you aren’t giving them what they want.
Feedback
Smart email marketers build relationships with the people they market to. They ask for feedback about the products - testimonials, blog comments. If you are reaching out to your audience and and getting nothing back, it may be time to reconsider your approach. Take a look at the content you have been sending out and the layout of your email, especially the placement of links that lead back to your blog.
Unsubscribes
This could be the most obvious sign that your email marketing campaign is in need of a makeover. People unsubscribe from email for loads of different reasons, some of which have nothing to do with you, your products or your business at all. But in my experience, most people unsubscribe from email because they forgot they signed up for it in the first place (in which case you need to send your email more often), or because the content of the email itself holds no interest for them. In either case, there is something you can do about it, but you have to know what the problem is before you can fix it.
SPAM Complaints
This is the worst. If you start accumulating SPAM complaints, you can run into trouble from your audience, your service provider or worse (hint: it rhymes with other-mint). If you want to avoid getting pegged as a SPAMMer, you have to pay close attention to two things - your subject lines and you sending frequency.
Help Is Here
If you think that your email marketing campaign might be suffering, perhaps it’s time to take a look under the hood. Get yourself a free Google Analytics account and you’ll have the chance to see what’s working in your campaign and what isn’t. Email marketing is all about trial and error. The more you know about the people you are sending your emails to, which subject lines they respond to and what kind of content they like, the better your campaign will be.
