A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning. He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousand of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few second and then hurried up to meet his schedule. A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping continued to walk.

A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work. The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.

In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32. When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars. Two days before his playing in the subway, tickets for Joshua Bell's performance at a theater in Boston were sold out and the seats averaged $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of an social experiment about perception, taste and priorities of people. The outlines were:

in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?

Exceptionally good one and it touched my heart. We are not worried about whats happening and not thinking about what we have lost while in the journey and when we think about it we might have lost the beauty of it.

I dont think this story just shows our attitude towards appreciation of art. It also shows the hypocracy attached to the appreciation of artistic works. Since nobody new the artist nobody cared. If he would have played same tunes with his usual fan & fare in a big stadium with charging 100 dollars the same audience would have appreciated him to PRETEND that they are real music lovers.

Jabir an excellent post. Yes we really dont understand the talent since we dont devote any time. If some time is devoted one is in a position to judge the real talent.

Good one. To add to the WP conclusions:
(i) The world makes a beeline for a celebrity, but sidelines that very celebrity if he leaves his designated orbit and mingles with the crowd, incognito, unushered, unannounced and unexpectedly.
(ii) The world is dominated by the crowd mentality -- there is nothing extraordinary in its midst and everything is routine.

We miss out on many things which are around us as they may look ordinary and regular, but they may turn out to be extraordinary. One of this example is Narrow Gauge Train at Gwalior, which is running for last hundred years and connects more than 250 villages. It is world's narrowest track measuring only 610mm and longest with 198.5 KM length.
The train is so much packed daily with passengers that there is not even an inch of space left at roof of the train. Thanks to the railway Deptt that they are running this train even with scarcity of resources such as Engine, coaches, spare parts, track's durability to sustain load, topographic disadvantages etc apart from few financial sources. It is because of the diligent operations and maintainance practices followed at Narrow gauge Deptt that this train is able to connect those 250 villages to rest of world. There is no other connectivity than this train in most of villages. The train is not only a mode of travel, but also shares emotional bond with the people.
There is very famous documentary on this train made by students of ABV-IIITM Gwalior, some part of that can be seen visiting this link.

Thank you very much for posting a story. It teaches many morals. Do you know the most intelligent person in the world. It not all the people you think in 20th century. Please read about Christopher Langan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Langan. He is born in a family that all his brothers have different fathers due to poverty and he is working as a bouncer in a club. But his theories are great to learn. We miss Langans due to poverty and have Madoffs, Rajus and Rajas to be proud of.
