When I was going through news paper and different article in net about "Why NDA lost the battle".

People are saying that it is bcz of Advani but results show that last time, they were at 138, remained 15-20 seats behind, but this time the NDA, which fought the election without two major allies, the TDP and the BJD, still managed to get over 160 seats. So they did a great job according to them. I also somewhat agree with them. But if we start analyzing still why they fail, 1st thing come in to my mind is urban voters vote (Aam Aadmi Factor).

This "aam aadmi" image of the Congress party helped it to connect to the people more than ever. While its National Rural Employment Guarantee (NREG) scheme and loan waiver program for indebted farmers made it appear a pro-poor, pro-rural party, the prime minister's credibility and passionate espousal of the Indo-US nuclear deal, which is seen as the answer to India's energy problems; efforts of the government in building modern infrastructure and feel good factors like India's Mission to the Moon, seem to have shown him up as a man of vision and conviction and struck the right chord with the urban, especially the middle class, as urban India votes for the same things that rural India does - governance, development, harmony and a secular, middle-of-the-road approach to issues things that the Congress party promises and does best.

However, it is also true that the UPA government watched helplessly as job cuts number grew, industrial production fell and economic growth slowed and inflation touched its peak during its rule. It was also left red-faced when Pakistan-based terrorists brazenly attacked Mumbai, killing over 200 people, triggering a hot debate about how secure the country's borders are.

And, BJP did not hesitate to attack Congress on these grounds during the election campaign.

However, BJP forgot one thing. The UPA government was helpless because it was in the right place but at the wrong time. The Congress could hardly be blamed for seeing food and other prices zoom, especially when commodity prices worldwide were skyrocketing.

As for job cuts, decline in industrial production and fall in economic growth rate, well, these were fallouts of the global economic slowdown over which India had no control, leave alone the Congress party or the BJP.

As for the BJP using terrorism as a poll-plank, well, there are some issues that Indians, especially urban, middle class voters closely align themselves with and terrorism is one of them. However, terrorism alone does not win or lose elections. The middle class may feel strongly about the subject, but to almost all of them, educational and economic reforms are far more important electoral issues.

Besides, the BJP should be the last organization to harp on terrorism. After all, how can the nation forget the Kandahar incident of December 1999 when terrorists took Indian Airlines passengers to ransom? And, that too, when the BJP's L.K. Advani was the Home Minister. If Advani had fumbled in handling the hostage issue then, is it possible for anyone to trust him with the security of a nation of over 1 billion population?

All in all, India's common man gave the UPA government its backing as the mood just did not favor experiments. The ruling party had received the seal of approval from India's voters and was seen as the best bet in the circumstances as it seemed to have a clear chain of command.

People also say and think that for the 1st time due to UPA, Pakistan admitted about terrorism. If NDA had been here it might have lead to a war situation. (I might be wrong in this case, but aam aadmi think so).

And most importantly today stock exchange went upto 17.34% and reached 14284.21 mark. Which shows that people are supporting UPA more than NDA.

HMMM...Gud one...The thing is we need some reason to vote a leader. The BJP was running behind "Majboot neta nirnayak sarkar" and majboot neta is Advani? I can't hear this...

nice article.but, still urban voters do favour NDA in particular BJP.(eg.Karnataka).JD(U) swept in Bihar, but major loss for NDA was in states like Rajasthan,Andhra Pradesh and in UP.I still believe NDA would have framed better if voting percentage was increased by another 10% and that too in cities.

My view is that sans Mr. Bajpai active presence, the party is like 'headless chickens'. I doubt whether the party take his opinion and advice serioulsy now on it's policy matters. I am sure that Mr. Bajpai's reaction of Varun Gandhi episode would have been different from that of Mr. Advani.
Incidentally, I happened to travel in a Ist class coupe from Tenali to Delhi with Mr. Bajpai and Mr. Advani when Indira Gandhi was PM. With the interactions we had on many contemporary issues, politics, technology needs etc. I was very much impressed by Mr.Bajpai's far sighted views and the way he put everything across in a his own amusing way and his eagerness to know other's views and willingness to share his views with a very ordinary technocrat co-passenger. Difference in the way of approach of these two respected senior politicians, was distinctly evident to me then.
I am very saddened to see the slow degradation of the BJP. It can be attributed to a great extent on few of its top leaders who do not consider integrity as a great virtue.

How convenient it is to blame the government.. There are flaws in government and then there were always flaws there.. now we can see them clearly because many people are coming up and giving voice to the wrong practices..
It is a wonderful concept but we need a right plan to follow it. Just an idea wont help.
Bad news really bad news . 1) We should produce our own arms . 2) More arms means more fight. 3) Only arms would not ensure security.
