Alcohol use- Benefits and Risks

Drinking alcohol may offer some health benefits, especially for your heart. On the other hand, alcohol may increase your risk of health problems and damage your heart.

Health benefits of moderate alcohol use

Moderate alcohol consumption may provide some health benefits. It may:

  • Reduce your risk of developing heart disease
  • Reduce your risk of dying of a heart attack
  • Possibly reduce your risk of strokes, particularly ischemic strokes
  • Lower your risk of gallstones
  • Possibly reduce your risk of diabetes

Even so, the evidence about the possible health benefits of alcohol isn't certain, and alcohol may not benefit everyone who drinks.

Moderate alcohol use may be of most benefit only if you're an older adult or if you have existing risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol. If you're a middle-aged or younger adult, some evidence shows that even moderate alcohol use may cause more harm than good. In fact, if you're a woman and drink alcohol, talk to your doctor about taking supplemental folate to help reduce the risk of breast cancer associated with alcohol use. You can take other steps to benefit your cardiovascular health besides drinking — eating a healthy diet and exercising, for example.

Guidelines for moderate alcohol use

What counts as a healthy "dose" of alcohol that may be good for you hasn't been determined. But under U.S. health guidelines, moderate drinking is defined as:

  • Healthy men 66 and older: a maximum of three drinks per occasion, or seven drinks a week
  • Healthy men 65 and younger: a maximum of four drinks per occasion, or 14 drinks a week
  • Healthy women: a maximum of three drinks per occasion, or seven drinks a week

Examples of one drink include:

  • Beer: 12 ounces (355 milliliters)
  • Wine: 5 ounces (148 milliliters)
  • 80-proof distilled spirits: 1.5 ounces (44 milliliters)

When to avoid alcohol use

Keep in mind that moderate use of alcohol doesn't mean that using alcohol is risk-free. For example, if you drink too much alcohol on one occasion — say you binge drink a week's worth of alcohol in one or two days — you face serious health problems. Likewise if you drink and drive.

Here are other situations in which the risks of alcohol use may outweigh possible health benefits:

  • You're pregnant or trying to become pregnant
  • You've had a previous hemorrhagic stroke
  • You've been diagnosed with alcoholism or alcohol abuse
  • You have liver disease
  • You have pancreatic disease
  • You have heart failure or you've been told you have a weak heart or dilated cardiomyopathy
  • You're planning to drive a vehicle or operate machinery
  • You're under age 21

Some situations are less clear cut. Use alcohol only with great care and after consulting your doctor if:

  • You have a family history of alcoholism
  • You take prescription medications for a health problem
  • You use over-the-counter pain relievers or fever reducers
  • You have a family history of breast cancer
  • You have precancerous changes in your esophagus, larynx, pharynx or mouth

Consequences of heavy alcohol use

Although moderate alcohol use may offer some health benefits, heavy drinking, binge drinking and other dangerous drinking can cause potentially serious health problems, including:

  • Certain cancers, including breast cancer and cancer of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus and liver
  • Pancreatitis
  • Sudden death if you already have cardiovascular disease
  • Heart muscle damage (alcoholic cardiomyopathy) leading to heart failure
  • Stroke
  • High blood pressure
  • Cirrhosis of the liver
  • Suicide
  • Accidental serious injury or death
  • Miscarriage
  • Fetal alcohol syndrome and other health problems in an unborn child

Drink alcohol only in moderation — or not at all

Finally, Don't feel pressured to drink alcohol. And if you don't drink alcohol now, check with your doctor first if you want to have an occasional drink to reap possible health benefits. Few medical experts, if any, advise nondrinkers to start drinking. But if you do drink alcohol and you're healthy, there's probably no need to stop as long as you drink responsibly and in moderation.

Alcohol if taken in from of medicine , than it can be good to us. But again we have to check for its reaction to our body. this can not be genoralised. As we know it is present in many medicines prescribed by our family Dr..
Yes it is also a medicine when it consumed to the extent to the limitations. Homeopathy medicine proved it. "Athi Sarvathra Varjaeth". Excess of anything is bad. For everything there are certain limitations. If the limitations are crossed consequences will be different. The universe is existing on the rule of balance. The problem with the alcohol is the person who consumes becomes an addict to it.
We usually see research mentioning the bad effects, but sometimes we also see the research about the bad effects of alcohol , the latter is funded by giant MNC's. so it's for you to take a decision.

Un natural products are not in healthy for body. Liquor consumption is also not benifited. People wants some relief from temporary tension but after consuming the liquor taking permanently problem. If use of liquor as a medicine this is useful but use of liquor is for pleasure this is hormful.

Thanks Suresh. I think the side dishes are actually even worst than limited quantity of alcohol.

Pine walo ko pi ne ka bahana chahiye!!
SO many useful eatables and drink are in this world which improves human health but when it comes to alcohol it becomes necessary to consume it. SO Don't hesitate and start consuming it. Limit will be automatically controlled by your language AND positon of your legs.!!!

I think the food and drinks we are consuming every day have the ability to generate required alcohol in our stomach it self by chemical reaction. The further consumption is only in excess side and not good for health.

Yes why alcohol, every thing in moderation is good but the majority of us will not stick to moderation. It starts with moderation over a period move towards increased consumption, especially alcohol, more than use we find its abuse. So better keep away from it.

There is a say also that these recommendations/research supported by liquor lobby abroad to increase their liquor sales. So non drinkers better not to attract to these kind of unsubstantiated, half baked study & not to give a try as they say "CURIOSITY KILLS THE CAT" Better Watch. Thanks Suresh well presented artcle, which proves that you are not on high while preparing this article.

More risk than good. There are 99% of drunkards sunk in drink, 1% may be adhering to right norms. WHen this is the case better ban it.
Good, informative article...Let me tell you frankly Suresh Prasad-ji, you are (I mean a knowledgeable person) a good company to drink with..

Well, all the statistics and the extensive detailing above are academic in nature. There are pros, there are cons. Like Mirza Ghalib said "Peeta hoon roz e abr shab o mahtab mein". He was a compulsive drinker and would drink when it rains or when it shines. What would define the benefit or the risk is the purpose of a drinking session of an individual. Some people hate premium quality scotch since to them "Woh hit nahin karti" For such persons, drinking is for getting drunk. There is no pleasure involved in it and there is no responsibility expected from such drinkers. Thus, there would be less benefits in such an enterprise. For some it is a toast to a hard day's work, and therefore there would be medical as well as psychological benefit derived from it.I believe as long as one knows he or she is not being a nuisance and is consuming alcohol for pleasure, is of a health which is sound enough to sustain the intake and can afford to do so, Alcohol is good. Other wise it is not. I do not bring in any gender bias , brand or class of product into the discussion because they become irrelevant for the Ayes and the Nays. Churchill smoked cigars and drank well upto his late eighties while another youngster, a veggie died of heart attack at 18. But it does not mean that you live longer if you follow Churchill. The bottom line is Be yourself , know when to start and where to stop.
Thank you for seeking my comments. It was indeed a pleasure.

yeah use off alcohol in good it is an old prescription because there is a brand XXX RUM in roman XXX means 30 so 30ml is good for health even taken every day

BUT
these days 90-92% consume not as medic but as fun, company, co-operate , and it starts with 30ml ends when he/she is high in this case its risk in all case and danger
so taken in right measure is good compared taken because it is available
