Hi Friends,

I am sharing with the reviews of IBM on work culture, growth prospects & salary, done by their employees.

Please share your views.

A Project Manager wrote:

What I like about IBM:
"IBM offers a very flexible working environment. In most cases, no one will ask you what time you come or go from office. Neither the logs of the swipe card will be analyzed to take some action against you in normal circumstances. In special circumstances, the company can even allow you to work from home. No blocking of internet or phones . All in all, you are "not" working in a jail. It has a wealth of knowledge..... "

What I don't like about IBM:
"Sometimes you feel that there are too many processes to follow. The company is so huge that it is a challenge to make people aware of existing processes. I have often seen it happening that sometimes small groups within IBM try to develop their own processes, often unaware that such a best practice already exists and can be leveraged. Ofcourses, Lou Grestner (former CEO of IBM) summarizes that Elephants can dance......"

does it help to get a job in IBM if I have a referral of an internal employee
  Commented by  Garima Kapoor, Technical Support, Wipro    | 06 07 2013 05:50:02 +0000
I completely agree with you Sanjay. IBM has got a very healthy work culture. Flexibility in the working hours and low pressure enhances the quality of work. Following a lot of process is a challenge man, and a workplace without such challenges renders the place dull. And if anyone is interested to work for IBM India, and is looking for some job opportunity, you should definitely
check out jobs.roundone.in/jobs-in-ibm these people actually arrange for you to talk to an insider of the company so that you gain a referral to the job.

I am an existing employee of IBM Bangalore and beg to differ those whose gave out and out negative reviews, it might be their personal grudge but again guys its the best place to work without fear, pressure would be there ( but do u really want to work without challenge), flexibility is enormous, if you perform they would respect you like anything.
Yes package might be less but you would not get everything in a package. But if you sustain you would definitely grow and go places. Trust my words I can give you word of honour and I do not have any share or relative at a higher rank in IBM so I am not marketing, this is truth. My emp id# 00425B

Can't believe it, IBM does not have sufficient work space for his employees and now till days People Manager becoming a GHOST for internal/outsource employee as well. If you are performer than be honest; IBM is not runway where u can perform.
Biggest Issue within IBM with your People Manager is:
1- People manager is GOD for your job, no leadership from HR for employee safer side.
2- Variable which is part of your CTC is grabbed by your People manager with xyz excuses.....and u have to pay Tax for entire CTC.
3- Now situation is really too bad within IBM, few employees having good comm. skills.
4- Self Ego which is making by stupid People Manager for IBM brand and telling all companies are LALAji company except IBM, and u are working for IBM.... this word you may get when u raise your problem/work related or xyz than u will suffer by above words.

And finally If we have good skills in terms of your technical/mgmt than u can switch anywhere but in IBM after a year u will become looser with your Technical stuff because now they have support king of role which create darkness for your career.

So entirely is People Manager is god and if your People Manager is happy with you than u may think your dream within IBM except MONEY..............Priya

Its a question of formal working and an informal working. Informal working looks so challenging from outside will lead to lethargic attitude! Most of the time, your priorities will change! Slowly, one will be forced to handle more domestic chores if you are spotted around! In my view, this will lead to disaster if one fails to maintain discipline, which otherwise is forced in a corporate environment!

The IBM employee are lucky to have a flexy time work but at the same time they should not forget to complete their work soon otherwise they will get prone to flexible time and will become lazy which is dangerous for INDIA

IBM HR policies are meant for showcasing. I have worked with several IT organization, IBM was one of the most un-professional.
There is no HR, People Manager is HR/Admin your god until you are there

The international standards (CMM, ISO) etc. sometimes force you to follow strict guidelines for even a simple process. Working environment should be friendly. These days, the role of HR and Administration have become more like policing, human element is missing in many organisations. No one purposely gets involved in petty delays, but due to circumstances beyond control, whereas the Administration makes a mountain out of mole in order to score a point. This vitiates the total trust the employee enjoys in the environment. IBM India follows a human approach that will not only better the performance of the employees but also develops loyalty!

Hi every one, hope this response finds you in good health. I had been in IBM for the past 11 months and in these 11 months I learned a lot about IBM. One thing I liked about IBM is that the HR system is very strong and you dont really have to bother about the company's policy starting from onboardning to seperation much. Things here happen too smooth and employees are not burdened a lot. Besides this, other things are't very appreciable. The work-life balance depends totally on the project you are in and how good you project management is. I had seen people in many projects in IBM working exactly the number of hours people are supposed to work. Even many employees in streamlined projects dont come to office many days and do work-from-home on need basis. But if you project management is bad, chances are very positive that you will become vistimized of being a scape goat. I was acclaimed to be a good performer as soon as I started working in my project and very soon I was pounded by many critical delivereables for which proper system analysis and requirement gathering was not done. This led to lot of stress to me in later part of the project which let me into many sleepless nights and the worst part was that I was assigned more deliverables on top of it. I learned from old IBMers that this kind of culture has started recently in IBM and prior to this IBM used to be very process oriented and metodical company. The pay package is also not standard and people from same company with same experience may differ at large in salaries depending upon negotiation. The notice period is also 3 months which is too long and unacceptable to many other companies. So finally the term 'Flexible' working enviornment and 'Good working culture' is very subjective and depends on the project you are in and this is not only with IBM but with many other IT giants.

The myth of Flexi working extends to screwing up your well deserved holidays, you do not get to use or encase your privilege leaves.Since you have a laptop is is assumed you will work from hospitals, trains, buses and anywhere you can open your laptops(TPis) The biggest impediment to growth in IBM is the people management function.IBM does not seriously think about retention or people development at least not upto Band 7 level in India. It is just that the culture is simply non existent

I am working for IBM for last 3 and half years and let me share pos and neg with IBM.

+ves :
1)Flexibility
2)Work culture
3)Onsite oppertunities (if you get, I think very less companies are there which pays you more than IBM for onsite assignments)

-ves
1) THE PACKAGE IS VERY VERY...VERY LESS COMPARED TO INDUSTRY STANDARDS
2) EVENTHOUGH YOU JOIN THE COMPANY AS PER INDUSTRY STANDARDS, IT WILL PULL YOU IN COUPLE OF YEARS TO ITS LEVEL AS FAR AS SALARY IS CONCERNED
3) NOWADAYS THEY HAVE MADE STRICT NOTICE PERIOD FOR # MONTHS. YOU CAN NOT BUY AND LEAVES CAN NOT BE ADJUSTED. BELIEVE ME EVENTHOUGH U R ON BENCH< U WILL BE KEPT FOR 3 MONTHS IDLE BUT WILL NOT GET RELEASE FROM THE COMPANY
4) WHENEVER U DON'T GET PROPER SALARY WRT. EXPERIENCE, GUYS ITS VERY DIFFICULT TO WORK
5) THE BEST HIKE % OF IBM IS SURELY THE WORST HIKE % OF MANY OTHER COMPANIES IN THE MARKET

Thanks for your views. I think the processes are always at the core of any organisation. It indicate the levle of inner strength of organisation.Sometimes employee may find it difficult and time consuming to follow all the processes all the time, but if you look at it from employer then you will realize that the process will be remain in the company but the employees may change, and when there is change in the employment then to know the previous employee work and task status these process will help you.

Thats amazing!! I have actually been on the blog of IBM employees and have read some of these too. I dont know what to say, but with the kind of work that IBM does and the kind of manpower that resides with them, I guess different departments would have different leeways to get their work done!! I cannot read anything beyond that. Interesting, thanks for the referral Sanjay!
