Anna Hazare Ends Latest Fast

The United Progressive Alliance government heaved a huge sigh of relief Sunday as Anna Hazare ended his 288-hour-long fast. Still, this may just be a lull before the next Hazare storm gathers.

The 74-year-old anti-corruption crusader announced his roadmap for the near future, saying: ‘I have only suspended my agitation. I will not rest until all the changes that I look to are achieved.’ After ending his fast, which seemed most of the past week to be broadcast live virtually 24/7 by all TV channels, Hazare also made it clear that his struggle to rid the Indian system of corruption would continue.

The Gandhian leader, who has become a cult figure in India, immediately announced his next target: sweeping reforms to the election and education systems, and a campaign to improve the livelihoods of millions of farmers and labourers. He also gave a sneak preview of his ideas on electoral reform, saying his next campaign would be based around the idea of the ‘right to recall and right to reject.’

The right to recall would cover elected representatives of the people, while the right to reject would mean a column on the ballot paper allowing the voter to say that he or she doesn’t like the listed candidates. ‘If the majority say they don’t like any of the candidates in the fray, the election should be cancelled,’ Hazare explained.

At the end of his historic fast, Hazare achieved something that has never before happened in the history of this nation of 1.2 billion people: a single man not only won over the government, but also made the Indian parliament dance to his tune. On August 27, in a day of political hurly-burly in and outside parliament, Hazare emerged the clear winner as both houses of parliament unanimously adopted a resolution without actually having to vote on his three demands.

The resolution stated: ‘The House discussed various issues relating to the setting up of a strong and effective Lokpal. This House agrees in principle on the following issues for an effective and strong Lokpal: 1) Citizen's charter, 2) Lower bureaucracy under Lokpal through appropriate mechanism, 3) Establishment of Lokayukta in states, 4) Further resolve to forward the proceedings of the House to the Standing Committee for its perusal while formulating its recommendations for a Lokpal Bill.’

Thousands of Hazare’s national flag-waving supporters at the Ramlila ground shouted slogans in support of their new messiah as two young girls, Simran and Ikrah, offered him honey mixed with coconut water at 10.20 am on Sunday. Hazare was flanked by his team as he made his victory speech, in which he said that what civil society achieved in parliament on Saturday was indeed a victory for the people of India. ‘This movement has created a faith that the country can be rid of corruption and we can go ahead with implementing laws and the Constitution,’ he said.

Hazare exhorted the crowds to continue their non-violent fight against corruption, saying the battle had just begun. ‘You don't become Anna by wearing the Anna cap. You become Anna by practicing my principles,’ he told his supporters.

After his brief speech, a visibly elated but frail Hazare was driven straight to Gurgaon by his personal doctor Naresh Trehan and admitted to the Medanta Medicity hospital, where he will be kept under round-the-clock observation for two or three days.

Yes there are flaws in Anna's Movement. May be we may not agree with what all team Anna did, but we should support such movements otherwise politicians will take us for granted and rule this country making all of us slaves. Now look at what MP's are at? They want to pin down Om Puri
I fully support Mr. Om Puri and nothing wrong in what he said in Ramleela grounds while supporting Mr. Anna Hazare. Every Indian should support Mr. Om Puri and ensure that these dirty Politicians should never raise their Voice again when they are commented like this. Politicians should know who is responsible for such may be dirty words coming out of common mans mouth?
In todays politics few people become so called leaders (there are exceptions of course) and give tickets to people who just cannot contribute anything for the development of this country and remain slaves of such leaders. The leader babu becomes CM/PM with the help of such slaves and rules this country. We call that it is democracy. Slowly such slaves want to become ministers or at least chairmen’s of some PSU or the other. People who went to schools graduates, Post graduates and PhD’s and struggled entire their life to get educated have to work under such salves and goondas who never went to schools and even if they have gone never passed exams with honest means.
Ganvar only means illiterate villager who is innocent and does not know the customs of modern society. In fact by using that word against these dirty politicians Om Puri has raised the level of these politicians and it is the innocent villager who has really feel bad.
I think all those people who has backed ANNA HAZARE’s crusade against the corrupt should now raise to this occasion to teach a lesson to these people sitting in Parliament and trying to find fault with Om Puri. People should storm the Parliament and arrest all the MP’s and bring them to People’s Court.
If MP.s think they are supreme it is high time people should show them their place.

Yes, this is indeed a relief to both politicians as well as to the people of this country. Nevertheless, we have to wait and see whether Anna's effort is going to reduce corruption in any way. Only time will tell if this was just fasting by Anna and passing resolutions by the government.

Anna's next target includes reforms in election, education, farm and labour sectors. It is true that all these sectors badly need justice. Anna will get more support for reforms in elections because people are disgusted with the "tamaashas" in indian elections. Bringing reforms to farming and labour sectors are also equally good. The livelihood of farmers and labourers need to be taken care of. Looks like Anna is going to put a question mark on the livelihood of Prakash Karat and company because they are considered to be authentic wizards in dealing with farmers and labourers. However, Anna will feel the real heat and rage of the Indian society when he tries to reform the education sector. Anna's fasting will not do any good in this case because different sections of the society have been fuming about the inequalities in the education sector for a long time. Some these concerns are genuine while some others are just opportunism and jealousy. Either way, Anna is most likely to go the Gandhian way, the unbiased way by allowing social justice for all. Will that kind of an unbiased way satisfy all sections and all religions of the indian society? The answer is a big NO. So, that day is not far when our so called hindutva people who had so long carried Anna on their shoulders will dump him saying that he is not Anna Hazare, instead he is Anna Muhammed Hazare or Aneez Mohammed Haq. This has happened in the past (in case of Mahatma Gandhi).

The cream of this whole episode is Anna's own observation that one does not become Anna by wearing a cap, instead one should practice Anna's principles (of non-violence and Gandhian way of life etc). Will this be acceptable to our hardline muslims, sikhs, christians etc. Will this be acceptable to our so called righteous right, the Hindutva people?
Rajeev ji, as you and some other pointed out, there may be some flaws in the movement lead by Anna, but it has the support of majority of the people, the first of this kind after independence. People voluntarily came out to support the cause. In the present broken political scenario, we hardly finds a charming leader. Naturally political fears about Anna and his crowd pulling capabilities. He is undoubtedly a charming leader now. I dont believe that his personality, political ground or some other trait that made him a charming leader, but the cause he took up that made him a true charming leader. People are fed up with the selfish acts of political parties and their leaders. This is the sign of real democracy. It is not Anna and his party but the people behind him made the political parties to bow their heads. It is the victory of the people under the leadership of Anna. His next agenda is Election Reforms. This is again a wonderful cause. "Right to recall" would be a powerful weapon to bring the netas to the terms. Democracy prevailed once again, thanks to Anna. I salute him.

Rajeev ji, there is a growing dis-enchantment between the politicians and the constituents. In the circumstances, people have been fuming inside, but no one they can really look up to for venting their feelings. They found in him the "Crusador of Corruption" who could take on any mighty people. His thirteen-day peaceful hunger protest in Ram Leela ground is one of its kind in the post-independent era. As you have rightly pointed out the politicians have heaved a sigh of relief. The politicians have admitted in the parliament that they have had sleepless nights due to such mass movement and 24/7 TV coverage was really tearing them apart. Anna thinks ten times ahead of politicians and they have really under-estimated his resolute approach and the followership. From now on, the politicians, cutting across party lines, would sensibly work towards making this law a reality, as they have much more to do to redeem their tarnished image in their own constituencies. India gate rally this evening in support of this India Against Corruption campaign to celebrate the winning moments bears testimony to peoples' support even in the absence of Anna Hazare who was taken to Medicity Hospital for treatment. A new paradigm of Participatory Democracy is on the card!
