Anna Hazare Under Fire

The inevitable has happened. It’s not just the Congress that is opposing Anna Hazare’s crusade for setting up a completely independent institution of Lokpal (ombudsman) that would have the prime minister, ministers and members of parliament under its ambit. The first non-Congress salvo against Hazare has now been fired by the Communist Party of India (CPI), which said on June 23 that those who expect the Lokpal Bill to rid the country of corruption are ‘living in a fool's paradise.’

CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan lashed out at civil society representatives, speaking in the kind of language that could easily be confused with that of Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh (although he condemned Singh’s smear campaign against Team Anna).

‘What does a “civil society” mean? Who are its members? Can they speak on behalf of the entire country? The five members (of civil society who are members of the joint drafting committee on the Lokpal bill) have an exaggerated notion about themselves. One must be modest,’ Bardhan reportedly said.

Bardhan dismissed Team Anna’s claims as ‘highly exaggerated’ and demanded to know from civil societyrepresentatives if they had touched on the source of corruption. In the next breath, though, he gave his own response. He said that corporate houses were ‘fertile sources’ of corruption, adding that there is a ‘nexus between corporate houses, bureaucrats and politicians.’ Bardhan did add, though, that he agrees with most of the points in the draft.

Observers here are convinced that tougher political opposition to the so-called ‘civil society’ led by Anna Hazare has been set in motion, and that the trickle of criticism promises to become a torrent. And this assessment likely isn’t far off the mark. Hazare has bitten off much more than he can chew, and has erred by taking on the entire political system.

The CPI’s reaction is significant. Thus far, it had been a face-off between Team Anna and the UPA government. The other three parties that constitute the Left Front together with the CPI – CPI (M), Forward Bloc and Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) – will inevitably follow suit sooner or later. All eyes will therefore now be on the main opposition Bhartiya Janta Party.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has written a letter to all political parties and chief ministers, in his capacity of chairman of the joint drafting committee, seeking their views on the Lokpal bill. All major Opposition parties, including the BJP and the CPI (M), have declined to give their views, saying they will only do so in parliament. The monsoon session of parliament is scheduled to begin on August 1.

R.K. Dhawan's statements shows us the congress view point on curbing corruption. Mr. Dhawan opined that " Govt. need not be so soft in dealing with this kind of people- If it is Indira Gandhi, she would have dealt the situation more firmly". Is Mr. Dhawan is in in exile and failed speak a single word, when the Govt. is acting soft in dealing with terrorism and terrorists. Bardhan, a old fashioned communist. It seems Mr. Bardhan and his party are worrying about the people's support being enjoyed by Mr. Anna and the other four. Since BJP is supporting this movement, communists naturally opposes anything blindly. We cant expect a response differently from him and his party.

Mr. Anna Hazare is using his moral eminence in a very immoral and decadent manner, which can be put in the category of blackmail. Fast unto death is a very tricky situation, and in a democratic country like ours, this has no place, as you cannot go on a fast unto death if things do not turn out your way. By indulging into such fasts on various occasions Mr. Hazare has shown a lot of irresponsibility and naiveté.

It isn't a matter that the congress and the communists are against this bill, but fact is very clear from a citizen point of view and I am continuously insisting on it's non-formation as I feel that the 5 very representatives who claim to be the civil society by themselves aren't trustworthy themselves. Factually there is a jeopardy in the selection of the civil society like one of the representative is Mr. Arvind Kejriwall who is the best flatterer of Mr. Anna Hazare, then the family psychodrama of the Bhushan (Shanti Bhushan and Prashant Bhushan), moreover Mr. Santosh Hegde was a failure in his area he previously worked( Manglore, Karnataka) for and not a single case is put to conclusion. and Mr. Anna Hazare who himself is merely acting like a catalyst to agitate and fool the common mass by claiming the bill to curb corruption where the members are so much like a group of fast friends. How can we expect clarity of the civil society members? Also respected Mr. Anna Hazare selected the members, why didn't he asked for a public opinion before selection of representatives of the civil society?

Mr. Sharma, inevitable has not yet happened. This Bill is not a cake-walk for politicians, because this directly concerns each one of them! So far, every legislation was made with "Proviso" clause to exclude them in some form or the other to escape any sort of situation! Civil Society is blunt, not taking care of such escapable provisions in their draft bill! Political parties, cutting across party lines, would try and scuttle this! I don't think the primary opposition party would welcome it in the monsoon session. If this Bill is introduced in true spirit, almost 40-45% of our existing politicians would be languishing in separate cells! Civil Society has also started their "advocacy campaigns" visiting major towns to make this draft known to common citizens. People now have realized that the politicians would be involved in mud-slinging exercise. They do not want to see another police excess in peaceful protest! Opinions from elites are divided. Government's NAC is talking about amendments in "People's Representation Act, 1951" to divert the attention of Anna's campaign! They will do anything and everything to stall the proceedings! We can only pray Almighty to bring this Bill a reality!
