ARE SALES people born or are they trained? Well, the answer can’t be as simple as the question seems. In many a cases, it has been observed that using sophisticated and prudent training, a lay man can be transformed into a flourishing sales man.

However, it is pertinent to share here that there are some people who even after going through rigorous sales training have failed to become a successful salesman.

So, what is the instinct that separates salesman from other professionals? There are host of things that play a key a role in defining a successful salesman, here are some of the traits:

Inclination for sales job/profession

Inclination for sales job is one of the most important facets expected from an individual or would be salesman. If you have fire in your belly to sell things, can negotiate deals, interact with strangers, then I am sure, you are carved out for sales domain. You can easily don the mantle of a salesman.

Personality

Some philosophical person may not buy this point; first impression is last impression though, in the sales domain. This personality trait plays a key role. A smart looking salesman impacts the prospective client even before the initiation of a dialogue.

Knowledge of the product

“Knowledge is power and ideas rule the world,” the quotation is very much apt for salesmen. If you have thorough knowledge of the product you are representing, and are sure to counter all sorts of customer and prospective customers’ queries, then surely you can sell the product. Besides, awareness about certain sales theories such as “Five Ps” of sales and “Law of Averages” also adds value to salesmanship skills.

Communication skills

Your ability to communicate with people, and prospective clients can take you to places in the sales domain. A budding salesman should have excellent communication skills. Employing his/her communication skill-set salesman can enter into dialogue with customers regarding their product, share its salient features, and how it can solve the purpose of the customer. And in the end negotiate and close the deal.

The above mentioned sales facets are just a tip of the iceberg - as the sales domain is colossal. By adhering to these finer sales skills, I am sure an individual can be trained to carve out a career into sales domain.

Considering the above, we can bring to a close the hot topic, “Are sales people born salesman or trained” as sales people are born sales man and they can also be trained.
