BALUCHISTAN: PAK’S  ACHILLES’ FOOT  !?

Baluchistan, Pakistan’s biggest province (covering 40% of it), is also its worst governed and most neglected. Unrest began here 50 years ago but the situation has worsened, thanks to inept handling by Islamabad. Today, it is a hotbed of tribal unrest and jihadi activity by Taliban & al-Qaida, and various other militant-groups.

 Source of great Wealth !

Baluchistan produces more than one-third of Pakistan’s natural gas, and is potentially rich in oil, Uranium, and copper. It accounts for less than 4% of Pakistan’s population.

Strategic importance right from the ancient times !

Located on the Arabian Sea and close to the Strait of Hormuz. Baluchistan lies to the east of Iran and south of Afghanistan. Any gas and oil pipelines from Qatar, Iran or Turkmenistan will have to pass through Baluchistan to reach either India or China

Baloch Liberation Army & Baluchistan Liberation United Front

Its leader Brahmdagh Bugti operates from Kandahar. Pakistan accuses India and Hamid Karzai’s Afghanistan of supporting Bugti with funds. BLA has regrouped during the Asif Ali Zardari regime. Another outfit, the Baluchistan Liberation United Front, abducted John Solecki, head of UNHCR’s operations in Quetta recently

What do Baloch nationalists want?

Autonomy; greater share of revenue from oil and gas; end to wanton military operations against them. More ambitious insurgents want independence from Pak .

Why the Baluchistan reference in the India-Pakistan joint statement can be a problem or not ?

• It  may help Pakistan downgrade India’s complaints about cross-border terrorism. Islamabad may use Baluchistan as leverage — it has told the US that if India wants action against LeT, New Delhi should stop its activities in Baluchistan.

Can India turn the table on Pakistan ?

Only if Indian diplomacy becomes more fleet-footed, it might be easy to turn the  table on Pakistan , instead, and pull the  international attention to human rights violations in Baluchistan and how it’s a safe hideout for al-Qaida, and other dangerous Militant Groups.

The highlighting of the question of  Baluchistan’s Azadi ( freedom ) , and the creating it as an issue to be debated to be disputed  at the World Forums may extend an opportunity for India to, strategically, use it as a potent tormentor to subside, duly balance and effectively dilute various problems created by Pakistan, India face time and again !

India had suffered a great loss in death of Our prime minister Indira Gandhi. If Indira Gandhi would have been PM for 10 more years, Balochistan would have been separated ftom Pakistan without much heart burn. After her, our other too soft leaders squanderd the cutting edge, India had gained.
In today's situation, if India has to play catalytic role in freedom of Baluchistan, it is a very closely guarded decision. Not open for discussions on open forums.
It is sure that, this decision is effective as a counter measure to curb Pakistan's terrorist activities in India. It is less expensive than, guarding the security in Indian cities, as a after measure. It is a war strategy, all the countries follow. Nothing to feel bad about it.

Pakistan Occupied Kashmir and Baluchistan both wanted to merge with India in 1948. Though today POK's people have been brain washed, Baluchistan is still fighting for its freedom. I believe, if they still want to merge with India, India should not loose this opportunity. It should snatch back our provinces like Baluchistan and POK back. Baluchistan's freedom struggle may help us, we can provide military support to them as they are doing to the separatists in Kashmir.

Yes It is moral duty of Republic of India to respond to the request by Baloch and Pashtuns in Balochistan.
Bugtis have fought for their freedom for long since they were occupied by Pakistan.
It should be done on priority basis asap.

i think is a correct point of view.
After the killing of Akbar Khan Bugti, leaders like Sardars Attaullah Mengal, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, and Nawab Khair Baksh Marri, heads of the three great Baluch clans, have been leading protests over the economic exploitation of the regions great natural resources to the exclusion of the local people.
the international community should be aware of human rights abuses in Baluchistan..

A Great point of view, and i agree with the wisdom of the author. The international community should come forward and support the supressed Baluchistani People ( the Balochs ) in their struggle for Freedom. And the issues of Human Rights violations in Baluchistan should be raised in the United Nations, and other International Political platforms, again and again.

Regards.
