Beautiful Thought
by Lord Buddha

Once Buddha was traveling with a few of his followers. While they were passing a lake, Buddha told one of his disciples, "I am thirsty. Do get me some water from the lake."

The disciple walked up to the lake. At that moment, a bullock cart started crossing through the lake. As a result, the water became very muddy and turbid. The disciple thought, "How can I give this muddy water to Buddha to drink?"

So he came back and told Buddha, "The water in there is very muddy. I don't think it is fit to drink."

After about half an hour, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back to the lake.

The disciple went back, and found that the water was still muddy. He returned and informed Buddha about the same.

After sometime, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back.

This time, the disciple found the mud had settled down, and the water was clean and clear. So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to Buddha.

Buddha looked at the water, and then he looked up at the disciple and said," See what you did to make the water clean. You let it be, and the mud settled down on its own -- and you have clear water.

Your mind is like that too ! When it is disturbed, just let it be. Give it a little time. It will settle down on its own. You don't have to put in any effort to calm it down. It will happen. It is effortless."

Having 'Peace of Mind' is not a strenuous job, it is an effortless process!

Treat everyone with politeness
Even those who are rude to you
Not because they are not NICE

BUT BECAUSE

YOU ARE NICE

Mr Kumbakonam, Srinivas ji, Murthy sir, the exercise attempted by Mr Kumbakonam was well-intentioned and every one must appreciate this. No "Sorry" is owed by anyone to anyone. Keep up the good work folks. Value addition to a post always is and should be welcome. Thanks to all the players in this little cameo started off by Ms Pooja.

Mr. Kumbakonam S Venkataraman, you need not say sorry to me or Mr. Rajeev. If there is something, its me to say sorry to you. But, I have no intention to demean anyone here. I was just kidding.. If I hurt the feelings of you and Mr. Rajeev with my comments, I am so sorry.

Dear Mr. Rajeev Sharma and Srinivas,

Sorry. I certainly did not mean to berate the presentation of Ms. Pooja Joshi. Only because it is very good, I sought to construct upon it further.

My only intention was that nobody should think that the story justifies inaction or timid 'peace at any cost' approach towards life.

even i have tried this approach many times and it really works. Not only it helps bring calmness to your mind but it protects the loss of work also. However i am having aquestion related to the story that how did the river knew that it should now settle the mud?really does this happens? So lets hope for the most polluted rivers of the country the same...Best of luck to Damodar and Yamuna

Rajeev ji, I got the message. Thanks for the suggestion. When Mr. Kumbakonam mentioned that it is "misleading", I put those comments.

While Mr Kumbakonam's inputs are valuable, I think one should look at the offered piece the way it is. Ms Pooja's story is beautiful as it is. At the same time if someone takes out time to present his/her own version as Mr Kumbakonam has done, there is no harm in that exercise either. Let me quote the great American poet in this context: DO I CONTRADICT MYSELF? VERY WELL, THEN I DO. I AM VAST. I CONTAIN MULTITUDES.

Editor ji, seems to have habituated to editing the write ups and try to put his finger and alter the entire write up. Lol.

As it is, this is misleading. Just leaving things to settle down is not always correct. For example, let me alter the story a little:

"Just when the disciple was about to take water, a man sitting nearby threw a big stone in the lake and water became muddy. The disciple returned and came back after half an hour when the water had settled down. But when he was about to take water, alas, the rogue committed the mischief again; and this went on for the whole day..."

Buddha would have told his disciple in the first time itself, "I preached right action with love. You have wrongly chosen inaction with fear. Go back, do what is necessary to correct the fellow; making sure that your love for him never diminishes."

Rama killed Ravana only like this; without becoming angry with Ravana, without hating him in the least; without losing his charming, affectionate smile even for a moment.

Here the time is not the remedy. The real solution is human action; right intervention; objective performance.

If it came to that, the disciple should have beaten the rogue and driven him away. Only thing is that while doing so, he should have kept his mind unruffled.

The mind should be calm, without being disturbed by anger or enmity; should be spurred only by the sense of duty. Duty discharged in this manner is described as Dharma.

It is important for the global youth to understand Buddha in proper perspective.

Wow. What a great explanation. Madam Pooja you made your presence yet again here with a wonderful post.

Time is the only remedy for many problems. Keeping quiet would be the better strategy, especially when there is no immediate solution for any problem. Any intervention in between will further deepen the problem some times. Thank you very much for the post.

Our polluted thought requires some cleansing agent, i.e. TIME! Give your negative thought a sufficient time to get a crystal clear thought! Thanks Pooja for sharing this wonderful story!
