Big Brother in India?

By Rajeev Sharma

Now that Congress President Sonia Gandhi has fielded none other than Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to spruce up the image of the party and government by regularly engaging with top editors, his take on the most talked about issue in recent times – black money – is particularly significant.

On June 29, Singh met five editors from the print media for over two hours – an exercise that he plans to undertake each weekend. He discussed a range of issues that are dominating Indian politics, including corruption and black money.

Singh bluntly told the editors that there’s no ‘magic wand’ that will remove the problem, and stated that black money made up as much as 25 percent of even major European countries’ economies. But he also explained that his government was in the process of negotiating double taxation avoidance agreements, tax information agreements with a number of countries, and has fought hard in the G-20 to secure modifications to the secrecy of tax saving banking systems.

Singh also stressed system reforms to curb the twin problems of corruption and black money, pointing out that the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) project that Nandan Nilekani has promised to design will go a long way toward tackling these issues.

The UID project is crucial for addressing several problems in one go: corruption, black money, illegal migration and terrorism. By 2014, it’s hoped the UIDAI will be able to provide every citizen with a unique identity card, allowing it to keep tabs on every Indian. The prime minister argued that the UID project would provide ‘a new pathway to eliminate the scope for corruption and leakages in the management and distribution of various subsidies to which our people are entitled,’ but he also stressed that it will take time.

He also added that although the government is going ahead with various other projects for dealing with corruption, ‘(M)y worry is to avoid a situation when we convert this vast country of over 1.2 billion people into a state where everybody is policing everybody else. We must not bring back the license permit raj which we sought to abolish in 1991,’ Outlook India quoted him as saying.

This is indeed a major concern as several upcoming security-related projects would enable the Indian government to track the movement and financial transactions of its citizens as never before. This is certainly good from a national security point of view, but from the viewpoint of personal freedom, projects like UID and NATGRID – anintegrated facility for linking the databases of 21 departments and ministries – raise the spectre of India becoming a police state.

Thanks for referral Mr. Himanshu Pathak,

When we approach a doctor for diagnose, he will certainly identify auxiliary causes for it. Say , to look into Blood, Stool, Urine, ECG , X-ray etc. A proper remedy lies how effective in investigating these reports & applying one's expertise in the diagnose. In similar vein, a social pathology is also to be viewed. We know Corruption & Black money are the main cause that squeeze the society but, at the same time, there are so many attributive causes that makes these phenomenon exists.

As perceived here in the column, curative measures are on the anvil but, we do know that it will take time to get away from it. "A drop of poison will spoil the Ocean"- thats the concern of a constructive man. Miracle can not happen as Allauddin did.
Wow. Thank you very much sir. I might have troubled you much today. Sorry for the trouble. I believe, my Telugu is worse than my English.

Well nothing much to worry about your English, Srinivas bhai. But a columnist has to be a perfectionist-- I mean a good columnist. There can't be grammatical errors, albeit minor ones. But where exactly you need to spruce up your writing skills -- which I am sure you can and you will -- is the fact that you need to pick your words and expressions very carefully. Just a small example: Mr X passed away today. He was 87 year old. (Perfect English) Mr X passed away today. He was 87. (Better English because the two words "year old" are redundant.
A columnist needs to be a word smith. Because words pulsate, vibrate, communicate. Because words have life.
Thank you for the patient reading of some of my blogs. There are about 40 blogs. The links I provided may not directly take you to the subject I already mentioned. There will be 3 blogs on each page for Indyarocks. They are just blogs, I cant call them articles anyway. I referred them to assess my English. What are the specific suggestions to further improve my language because I cant find my mistakes, since they are my child. Lol

Dear Srinivas,
I read three of your pieces, of which petrol prices piece is the best, while trivalley needs to be spruced up. One on Osama bin Laden will find no takers because this subject has been flogged to death. Here are my conclusions and recommendations:
1. Your English is okay, but still not up to the mark for English publications.
2. Redraft your petrol prices article. Remember you are writing a news/opinion article for a newspaper and not an essay for your school/college magazine.
3. When you redraft your petrol prices article, start with your comment/observation/opinion. Don't start reeling out facts because statistics are cold and boring. On the other hand, rope in statistics cleverly to push your opinion or observation.
4. At your current level of English, I can recommend you to Eenadu where you can write in Telegu and yet still get published. But for that your Telugu needs to be flawless. In case it isn't then let me know. We will cross the bridge when we come to it.
5. You can be a columnist provided you work very hard, be a quick learner and take care of the things mentioned above.
Best.
Rajeev
Rajiv ji, Thank you very much for the suggestions. It seems I find the way. You are my judge. I am sending you a few links. Please go through the links when you find time. Judge my English and suggest for betterment. They are my blogs posted on Indyarocks.com some time ago. I am sending them to you just to judge my language. Am I bothering you sir. Sorry for troubling you.

Srinivas Ji,
You need the following things to be a columnist.
1. Your English has to be impeccable, flawless.
2. Your writing should be smooth, like a flowing river.
3. Your choice of subject and its treatment have to be attention-grabber.
If you think you fulfill these requirements you can send me your piece on my personal email bhootnath004@yahoo.com and we will take it from there.
Best.
Rajeev

Srinivas Ji, Thanks a ton for your kind words about my Eenadu article. I know Eenadu sells almost 1.5 million copies daily, but I didn't know that busy officials like you do find time to go through the edit page of the Telugu daily. However, I beg to differ with you Srinivas Ji and Murli Ji on the issue of putting PM under the Lokpal ambit. I propose to write an article on this and will share it with you here on toostep. Thanks also to Rohit Bhai and dear Himanshu.
Rajeev ji, your article "WHY AMERICAN WITHDRAWAL FROM AFGHANISTAN IS BAD FOR INDIA" was published in Eenadu today (Translated Telugu version). I read it. A good article in deed. Coming to this topic, PM claimed that UIDAI answers the twin problems of corruption and black money. Can we believe it? One more thing if he believe that UIDAI could answer these problems and stop the leakages in the management and distribution of various subsidies to which our people are entitled, why the Govt. taken up "ADARSH CARD" and wasting huge public money. PM opined that he as an individual has no objection for inclusion of the post of PM into purview of the "Lokpal Bill", but the Congress is strongly opposing this. This statement of PM, shows how weak he is. He will not be spared by the party, if he crosses the dictum of the party and the UPA chairman. So, he strategically maintain the silence till now. But the party is pushing him forward to keep the image of the party and UPA as well. We have to wait and watch how the things are going to shape up in the coming days.

Yes there is no magic wand but does that mean we should stop working? We need to do something and even small steps will help in long run. It might take long but our aim should be to end it.
Thank you Sir for a nice post.

Yes. Mr. Rajeev Sharma. These projects would steal away our freedom! Today, the security issue has distanced the Prime Minister from people. Wherever he goes, the entire area is cordoned off for 48 hours preceding to his visit! The congress party thinks that only the PM has "Mr. Clean" image who will be able to face-lift the image of the Congress before UP Election. UPA-II's image is dented due to the handling of Baba Ramdev and Anna Hazare! Now, after 2G Scam, their allies are not towing with the party line in the Lok Pal Bill! Another point is, between now and next election, if his equation to meet with the Press every week, he has to hold at least 50 such meetings, each meeting will last, say, for two hours. Before every meeting, he has to take the briefing from the UPA Chair-person. In case, he, out of compulsion, out of curiosity and inner conscience, expresses something that would impede the interest of Congress, do you think he would be spared by the Congress-men? Anna Hazare has already taken the cue from the PM's expression of no-objection to get included in the Lokpal Bill and started meeting with the major opposition and also sought appointment to meet with Sonia ji. In the coming days, he would be forced to face tough questions from the National Media! Let's wait and watch which way the entire episode would go!
