The 'green toilet',as it is likely to be called,is expected to revolutionise the toilet system of railway passenger coaches. This initiative has been jointly taken by Stone India and Eastern Railway in consultation with RSDO of Lucknow.
Unlike the usual railway coach toilets which discharge all its effluents on the track, the 'green toilet'has a closed chamber below the train .Instead of discharging human waste on the tracks retains the same in the tank.
Different types of non pathogenic bacteria strains are injected in these tanks. The bacteria digest the human waste and help produce harmless gas and water.
This water is further processed to make it safe for the environment through a special treatment before it is permitted to overflow and fall in between the tracks. The treatment and the bacteria are such that this effluent water discharged is harmless.
If implemented across Indian Railways ,the new system will help in keeping the platform clean and hygenic.
The toilet is also fitted with a controlled flush system to conserve water.
Unlike a normal toilet flushing system which uses 6-10 litres of water, this electronically controlled pressurised flushing system uses only 1.5 litre water.
I feel this is an innovative approach towards green technology.
