This article is written by Mr.Arun K. Gupta in The Speaking Tree blog and I like to share with you friends.

The word ‘ethics’ comes from the Greek word ‘ethikos’. It refers to one’s moral character and the way in which society expects people to behave in accordance with accepted principles. Business ethics is the code of good conduct that a business adheres to in its daily dealings both with other businesses and with customers. Most philosophers conclude that ethical failure occurs because of lack of character. Virtuous people will live ethically. Therefore, we need to think about the desired virtues and how one can develop those virtues.

Aristotle’s virtues for the city state included prudence, justice, courage and self- restraint. Christians added faith, hope and love. Over time, a number of others were added – compassion, generosity, empathy, hospitality, modesty and civility. In the month of Magha (December) 5,000 years ago, on the battlefield at Kurukshetra just before the start of Mahabharata war, Krishna outlined to Arjuna a system of ethics that has withstood the test of time In the Bhagavad Gita. Krishna tells Arjuna not.only how to build character but also the root cause of ethical failure and how to avoid it.

Krishna outlines 26 qualities of a gentleman – to be merciful, obedient, truthful, equitable, saintly, magnanimous, mild-mannered, clean, simple, charitable and peaceful He should have surrendered to God and not be greedy or possessive but remain steady and determined, free of the six bad qualities, not gluttonous, sober, respectful, humble, grave, compassionate, friendly, eloquent, expert and conciseIt is easy to give a list of positive qualities that we can all agree upon. Yet, even though.hundreds of trainers work day and night to teach people good character, when it really matters, people’s character still fails.

Why? Krishna answers in chapter three, verses 37 and 38: “O Arjuna, it is lust later transformed into wrath, which is the all-devouring sinful enemy of this world. As fire is covered by smoke, as a mirror is covered by dust, or as the embryo is covered by the womb, the living entity is similarly covered by different degrees of this lust”. To maintain good character, we must overcome kama, that is, lust or selfish desire Most people think kama means just sexual craving, but it simply refers to.an overwhelming desire for anything, such as lust for power.

Greed, dishonesty and corruption are all byproducts of lust. To be happy, successful and well situated, the Gita says, one must control lust Gita’s solution to the ethical failure and downfall of corporations and society and family is controlling the senses with spiritual strength. Ethics is linked to spirituality For the last century or more, western businesses separated work and spirituality. Kurukshetra was also about mind control. Every one of us, whether as manager or employee, is fighting.his own battle, his own Kurukshetra.

The Gita can help us to learn to regulate our senses, control our minds and gain spiritual strength. The Gita is as fresh in insight and as relevant today as it was 5,000 years ago. If only every manager, administrator, politician, employee, worker and others pick a copy of the Gita and spend a few minutes daily reflecting on its message, one can experience the positive transformation. Who doesn’t wish to be disciplined, to achieve home-work balance and bring peace and harmony in a secular.environment? The US-based writer is ISKCON member and consultant on contemporary management topics based on the Gita.

Well Mr.Manish Kumar, who has told you that following Gita would make one without money and future. This means you have not properly understood the meanings of Gita. Your failures are not due to the Gita but by something else and the reasons best known to you. Gita never says not to earn money for the living. It teaches how to control one's mind and body through various stages in order to attain perfection in any professions. For all consequences whether good or bad we are responsible since what is the input will be the output, ie for every action there is an opposite and equivalent reactions. We all are bound by our deeds or karma. All the living things in the world have to do their karma which means the action/deeds. [ to live ] Gita is applicable to all businesses and professions, but emphasizes with applicable ethics standard that's all. The professional dharma differs according to the profession chosen by individuals in accordance with time [Kalachakra] For example, killing a goat is a sin, but when killing the goats becomes a profession for any one is not a sin, since it is a profession for him. Similarly several examples and explanations can be given and the interpretations in meaning differs according to professions chosen. Like laws have exceptions under certain circumstances. If any one wrongly understand the meaning without proper analysis, Gita can not be blamed. Every body can earn money to lead their life through professional standard of ethics.

Well If you follow GITA I can assure you 1 thing you would be without money and no future. But you will be spiritually happy person. And people will take advantage of you.
Since Basic Principle is Karma is in your hands and results.
In business results are important and not efforts.
I am sharing my personal experience of life.
Please-Please do not preach GITA rather I would tell to follow MAYAN theory in business.

Virtues and Vices are very clearly established by Sri Krisna in Bhagavad Gita, which are relevant for all time to come. Interpretations are very many, mostly situation and circumstances-oriented. Therefore, a number of mis-givings are on Castes and Varnashrama Dharma. We have to understand in the context and purport, not based on interpretations given by certain authors! Thanks for posting such a wonderful post, Mr. Natterja!

Like Bible, Huron, and other scriptures Gita is also a world scripture for all. All religion teaches one but interpreted in different ways.Gita is suitable for the past, present, and future.Whenever we read it we will get the confidence and throws light from different directions. What is the life doctrine has been very well explained.

In replying to Sri.Krishnamurti Prabhakar, I would like to place here that even today the Varnashrama is here in our society and based on the concept of educated/uneducated and haves/have not. Hence it was earlier. Gita clearly explains that based the profession/character only the Varnashrama Dharma emanated and not based on the caste systems which is presently followed unfortunately and following from our forefathers.Gita defines the characters for each Varnashrama that is Brahman,Kshatriya,Vysya, and Shutra.Kindly note that a Brahman can become a Kshatriya and vice-versa, similarly Vysya can become a Kshatriya and all depends on the the characters and professions. Therefore the principles/doctrines of Gita can be applied to anything and any professions to perform ethically. The chapter Karma Yoga, Bakthi Yoga, Raj Yoga, and Gnana Yoga clearly deals with various phases of life and how to elevate oneself to the level of God himself.

Thank you. One of the greatest limitation of Gita is its acceptance of gross discrimination based on caste; Varnashrama dharma ensures people to be exploited in the name of religion. If the basic thought process is based on grossly discriminated ideas; how do you expect people to follow?

Thanks,Mr Natteraja for referral. Our up bringing passes through different phases. The upper most thing is we,learn more from our own association, surroundings.Knowingly or unknowingly, what in the end matters is our spiritual plane and relationships. Those who excels are leader and those 'who do't' always remain followers.
