Carbon dioxide, the most important greenhouse gas produced by combustion of fuels, has become a cause of global panic as its concentration in the Earth's atmosphere has been rising alarmingly

Carbon credits are a part of international emission trading norms. They incentivise companies or countries that emit less carbon. The total annual emissions are capped and the market allocates a monetary value to any shortfall through trading. Businesses can exchange, buy or sell carbon credits in international markets at the prevailing market price.

India and China are likely to emerge as the biggest sellers and Europe is going to be the biggest buyers of carbon credits

What is carbon credit?

kyoto Protocol: A mechanism under which countries that have been emitting more carbon and other gases (greenhouse gases include ozone, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and even water vapour) have voluntarily decided that they will bring down the level of carbon they are emitting to the levels of early 1990s.

A company has two ways to reduce emissions. One, it can reduce the GHG (greenhouse gases) by adopting new technology or improving upon the existing technology to attain the new norms for emission of gases. Or it can tie up with developing nations and help them set up new technology that is eco-friendly, thereby helping developing country or its companies 'earn' credits.

India, China and some other Asian countries have the advantage because they are developing countries. Any company, factories or farm owner in India can get linked to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and know the 'standard' level of carbon emission allowed for its outfit or activity. The extent to which I am emitting less carbon (as per standard fixed by UNFCCC) I get credited in a developing country. This is called carbon credit.

How does it work in real life?

Assume that British Petroleum is running a plant in the United Kingdom. Say, that it is emitting more gases than the accepted norms of the UNFCCC. It can tie up with its own subsidiary in, say, India or China under the Clean Development Mechanism. It can buy the 'carbon credit' by making Indian or Chinese plant more eco-savvy with the help of technology transfer. It can tie up with any other company like Indian Oil , or anybody else, in the open market.

What is Clean Development Mechanism?

Under the CDM you can cut the deal for carbon credit. Under the UNFCCC, charter any company from the developed world can tie up with a company in the developing country that is a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol. These companies in developing countries must adopt newer technologies, emitting lesser gases, and save energy.

GO GREEN! CArbon di oxide is used by plants for preparing FOOD for them to live! Photosynthesis. There was a very old story about Peepal trees. Hindu mythology has it that peepal trees are always found near Hanuman temples. It also carries a myth (albeit deliberate) that these trees house demons and devils!! Well the simple fact is that Peepal trees grow and grow huge. They have a large circumference that they shadow. Isnt it really surprising that when you actually stand under a peepal tree you feel cooler and better. Its because the tree is supposed to release maximum oxygen in the atmosphere during photosynthesis!! Now the myth helped and p[eople stayed away from Peepal!! (pun intended) :)) Similarly according to the Kypoto protocol, countries who have recorded max carbon content, should be made eco-savvy by others and ensure a cleaner and better environment to live in! Super article!

I would like to have a formula to calculate carbon credits based on our activity of developing and promoting bio plastics and Integrated domestic solid waste management systems for residential colonies and industrial townships where collection, segregation ,recycling of recyclables and composting of organic kitchen waste at source.
By developing and promoting 100% bio degradable and compostable product alternatives in place of similar plastic products, we intend to achieve our goal to make the MSWM Landfills free form non biodegradable plastics to begin with and by developing and putting in action, Domestic solid waste management systems for housing societies and industrial townships, recycling of recyclable waste at source and composting biodegradable and compostable kitchen waste at source, we shall be able to reduce further load on Landfills.

Recycling of any recyclable material has to be done scientifically and with thorough environmental engineering knowledge. Primarily, Recycling domestic waste at source and composting Organic kitchen waste will help us to reduce the load on MSWM Systems management and landfills & this in turn will reduce pollution of air, water and land, save greatly on fuel for transportation and reduce health hazards for human beings and stray animals!!! According to me, this effort will allow the municipal workers and rag pickers to come out of their Safety, Health and environmental pollution issues and their services can be utilized for a better employment in healthier, happier job conditions.
The issue of stray animals around MSWM landfill sites and Garbage dumps around cities and townships, consuming garbage and plastic bags will be controlled. The concept of developing and promoting 100% biodegradable and compostable products along with a sustainable and manageable SWM System has been developed by us to give a complete package for products and services, to reach the ultimate goal for developing a litter free environment.
A few thoughts on going green and starting from your home!!
The world's annual consumption of plastic materials has increased from around 5 million tonnes in the 1950s to nearly 100 million tonnes today. Create interest and awareness among people to stay green!!! Say no to plastic bags & packaging materials in municipal waste.
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE, AND COMPOST ORGANIC WASTE AT SOURCE.

DIFFERENTIATING BETWEEN WET AND DRY WASTE
Segregating between wet & dry waste helps in better waste management, including recycling of dry waste. Learn more.
WHAT IS WET AND DRY WASTE?
Bio-degradable waste such as vegetables, fruits, flowers, garden leaves, wood and pencil shavings or other organic or kitchen waste is known as wet waste, where as plastics, paper, glass, metals, tetra packs, aluminum foils etc. are classified as dry waste.
WHY IS WASTE SEGREGATION NECESSARY?
1) If the waste is not separated properly, it all gets mixed up in landfills. This can contaminate ground water and release methane gas, which is highly flammable.
2) Methane is also a green-house gas that ultimately leads to climate change and droughts. The impact of climate change on the world is already there for everyone to see.
3) When rag pickers put their hands into waste to clean it up, they suffer from cuts and abrasions that lead to infections. It is our duty to ensure the good health of these rag pickers by segregating wet and dry waste.
4) A lot of materials in every day waste are recyclable. When waste is not segregated, it is difficult to pick out these materials for recycling. This leads to a lot of wastage of valuable resources.
TIPS TO SEGREGATE WASTE
1) To know if a certain kind of waste is wet or dry; ask yourself 'If it is put into a pit and covered, will it become mud or compost?’
2) Start keeping two separate dustbins in your house. One for wet waste and one for dry waste.
3) To make it easier to start off, begin segregating your kitchen waste first. You can classify the waste from the rest of your house as dry waste. Gradually as it becomes a habit, you can be more specific and start classifying waste in the rest of your home.

It is not a gimmick.it is technically possible and it has to be encouraged..As a signatory of Kyoto Protocol India is bou8nd to take steps to reduce Carbon dioxide emission. Thanks Beena for bringing a useful topic fro discussion

Carbon credit is a gimmick. For the hack of it. Guys are swindling money in millions. As the article reveals," Does only the developing countries who are partner in Kyoto, sell carbon credit to developed countries? Don't you see that developed countries involve in all sorts of industrial activities & emit any amount of carbon?". And only, the developing countries grow trees like a Farmer?.Banyan tree, Peeple tree, Neem tree ALL STORIES ARE OKAY.But, are we progressing industrially? or still, is sitting under Peeple tree?

What I understand is that Industry needs to adopt green-technology in all possible manner & try reduce carbon / CHG to the minimum stipulated or less than the limit prescribed to sell off.I think it need not be a developing country / developed country. Wherever the Industry is that comes under KYOTO PROTOCOL, takes all possible measures by adopting green-tech elements & reduce the CO2 & CHG below the limit. If not possible, they can make use carbon credits & justify the level of emission to the limit. If my understanding is wrong, please correct me.

- Firstly, the advantages of carbon credits mean that the money from the purchases of carbon credits is used to create renewable energy projects and develop sources of renewable energy from wind turbines and solar panels for example.
- Energy saving initiatives are also created using carbon credits. People in the developing world are often given investment to help them save energy.
- These renewable technologies and energy saving schemes are often put into action in poorer nations, meaning a boost for the local economy, and the opportunity to improve the quality of life for local inhabitants.
- The advantages of carbon credits can also provide employment for both people in the developed world and the developing world, this is through the manufacture and installation of renewable energy products.
- Carbon credits in theory should help to reduce carbon emissions.
- The advantages of carbon credits mean that some of the schemes used like protecting rainforest have other environmental benefits. Though schemes like this are clearly flawed because they are not offsetting any carbon like they should be doing, but are merely stopping more being released by the cutting down of trees.
