How well your personality and career match can significantly influence whether you find that career fulfilling, stressful, boring or challenging. In India people do not give much importance to such things. When I say this I am not talking about the people who are exceptions. There are few people who think in a different manner and want to do what they love and what suites them. A big difference between one's personality and the job tended to result in low job enjoyment. But if there was too close a match between your personality and the job, then job enjoyment also started to drop.

Being in a job where there is a modest degree of stretch can therefore have some benefits.

The benefits are following :

  • you can provide a different type of contribution to others in the same field
  • you find the challenge of being 'stretched' rewarding
  •  doing a job that closely suits your preferences may not provide enough personal development for you working outside your preferences may encourage greater creativity from you
  • teams often perform better with a mix of people/perspectives, and you may be able to fill a niche that others do not fill

There are two types of "stretch"

1. Within your preference : The challenge lies in the areas of your strength.

2. Across your preference : The challenge lies in the areas of your weakness.

A person has to stretch even if the work does not belong to his preference zone. This does not result into anything productive. But if you stretch yourself into kind of work you are capable of and that you want to do the result will be magnificent.

What more can one expect to be in such situation where your personality matches with your profile. But I feel sometimes, the time we completely understand our personality, its already late to shift...in such situations we tend to continue fulfilling our job profile and try to upgrade or bend our personality according to the situation to get better and successful results in professional life. Thanks for the wonderful insight Miss Kriti! Liked it!!

Personality, Career, opportunities and livelihood are totally different in India. It is all unconnected. Person having an aptitude in Science does not always end up becoming a scientist and yet there are not enough opportunities available for becoming one and if so can he sustain his family/life through this option? Not really, there is always a struggle and one has to have the right kind of leverages to get doing what one's propensity is with respect to future earnings and promotions. That is the reason why Personality and careers do not often meet. Rarely we find this in a candidate and have to make adjustments in general always. We prefer free thoughts, but our boss is straight jacketed horse, we prefer agressive pace, but boss is laid back, many examples of how personality and career do not go hand in hand.

It depends on job scenario. The job seekers accept the job since 'money' is the priority,Assignation of 'shift' is thereafter taking place to find a job to suit the personality.Again ,the job is accepted because of good package. The shift never ends and so the search for suitable job.Ultimately,'Emotional Quotient'develops during the period, the search ends but the shift continues.
Thanks,Virag and Kriti. May I take liberty to ask from Kriti ,whether your existing assignment matches your personality and how the idea of such a debate developed?

Having limited options has caused a huge majority to be in a job profile which is a mismatch to his/her personality. I see a change in this trend now. In our organization we do take care to hire people whose personality match their job profile, however we do end up with people who later on realize their personality and as part of talent management we shift their roles in slow transition to get them what they want without any impact on the productivity. I see an upward trend in this approach in most professionally managed companies. It’s a life changing need which corporate no more ignore.

Do you know who you are? I'm surprised how many person agree ith the portrait I write! However, there are always words to discuss on. It is often more difficult to "describe" oneself athan it is to "write" on somebody else.

Excellent insight Kirti. Many aspirants would benefit out of this insight if they understand the underlying message carefully. Matching careers according to personality is something like matching your horoscopes for marriage. By the time you match your preference career as per your personality trait, it would have been too late which will lead you to "neither here nor there" kind of situation as Mr. Rohit Thakur said. Its again, better to stretch oneself beyond a point based on his strength areas not on the weakness areas.
