So, more appropriately ...... engineer = engine + er = One who drives an engine.

I was wondering if i cud add a little bit of humor to this otherwise serious & meaningful post (excuse me for this). In my college this joke is pretty famous :

Once an Engineer & a sweeper meet in a park. This is the conversation that takes place :
Engr: Aaj mere paas degree hai, distinction hai, social status hai, bade logon ke saath uthna baithna hai. Tumhare paas kya hai ??
sweeper: Sahab mere paas job hai !!!
