As quoted by one of the editors of Times-“ A joke doing the rounds says that Kalmadi tried, in despair, to hang himself from a ceiling fan but the ceiling collapsed. We can do nothing right. Corruption and inefficiency have come to symbolise the organisation of the Commonwealth Games, in the popular imagination.
And people are outraged, disgusted. Rightly so. But what use is this outrage if it does not lead on to systemic change in how we do things in this country? It is easy to hang one Kalmadi, figuratively speaking, but not easy to fix what is wrong with the system.
This is my interpretation:
“Ram, Ravan, dou khade, kake lagu paye, balihari guru, govind diyo bataein”
And the Guru speaks- All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.
As it has happened with the Common Wealth Games, more prevalently known as Official Welfare Games, it has passed through all three stages of Truth, first it had been ridiculed that India hosting the Games- ironical, second, being opposed violently internally as well as externally, and third now it is being accepted that inspite of all failures, scams and scruples, India can make things work though at the last minute with its famous “Jugaad” and “Chalta hai “ attitude.
So still Ram prevails over Ravan! Inspite and despite the governance, coz it is the people that makes India tick.
Now coming to the write up as the editor says, a System with correct definition and measures needs to be installed. I have been participating in another similar debate on “Too Step itself, where a very logical stand was proposed for India by Jayant- Lets make India, the nation a Brand. And put up measures and controls that exist in successful Corporates.
Fixing corruption goes all the way to reforming political funding. Politics costs money. A political party generates legitimate expenses even in a non-election year, which together add up to a pretty penny.
In the absence of an institutional form of political funding, the legitimate expenses associated with political activity are financed through corruption: loot of the exchequer, sale of patronage or plain extortion. The politician cannot mobilise resources using the state machinery without the connivance and collusion of the civil servants.
The system suborns them as well, brave exceptions notwithstanding. Corruption will not go away just by reforming political funding, but without institutionalised funding of politics, the battle against corruption cannot even begin. Reforming political funding is key.
It is this cancer of Indian democracy that the Games have brought to bleak light. The Games exposes it to global scrutiny, and we hang our head in shame. Hanging is not particularly creative, however. The point is to strike at the root cause of corruption.
Corruption is a root problem not only in India but the world through out. Still Nations do flourish and grow, how?
It is because of the inherent nature of the people of the respective Countries, that progress and development should be of whole soul community, region and the Country not of individual, party, group or sect. Until and unless this realization is attained and practiced the root problem of corruption in India cannot be curtailed.

Mr.Raju, good Insight. Tnx Swapna for the ref. |
The Project leader sounds like a Political leader- "Do dhari talwar" |
As the old adage goes if there is Will there is a Way. A reform in society and Nation is a gradual process, which requires many factors, like Good Governance, Education, Economic and socio-political development etc. Nevertheless, the foremost is the... |
Very nicely highlighted and the last para gives the right solution & approach. However the corruption has been firmly rooted in the minds of our politicians. Just I would like to add something here from what I read from the yahoo News: Huge investments have been locked-up in the mega development work carried out for the CWG. The consequences will be of low returns, and long term debts. As a result the people will be forced to pay through increased taxes, prices, and other cesses. According to some reports, the countries hosting large scale events like Olympics, World Cup, and Commonwealth Games have plunged huge debts after suffering losses and attributed the economic crisis. Mexico, Seoul, Barcelona, and Sydney are among countries that have incurred huge losses after hosting mega sports events. The studies claimed that the costs of most games projects have tripled and has even gone up by 40 times in certain cases in the four years between 2006 and 2010. Hence our country should take note of this and plan accordingly in order to arrest the inflationary impact expected in view of the huge expenses in conducting the CWG in our country. Further the corruptions and scandals involved will inflate the prices further. Thanks Ms. Shiuli Mukhergi for the referral.
