I find that data mining and predictive analytics fall into the same category--they are the same basic technology but described from different perspectives.

Predictive analytics is a term I see more in the CRM and database worlds. Perhaps some of this is due to the encroachment of BI into the data mining world, where queries and OLAP are sometimes called data mining (after all, you are "drilling" down into the data!). This would necessitate creating further distinctions in terminology.

However, I don't see data mining losing hold on the style of predictive modeling that is largely empirical and data driven.

Although we have heard many times that predictive analytics will optimize our marketing campaigns, it's hard to envision, in more concrete terms, what it will do. This makes it tough to select and direct analytics technology. How can you get a handle on its functional value for marketing, sales and product directions without necessarily becoming an expert?

Predictive analytics builds models automatically, but the overall business process to direct and integrate predictive analytics is by no means automatic - it truly needs your marketing expertise.

A careful combination of predictors perform better customer prediction by considering multiple aspects of our customers and their behaviors. Predictive analytics finds the right way to combine predictors by building a model optimized according to our customer data.

For Predictive analytics, the best algorithms are those embedded into the IDASM. The systems undergoes over 85000 calculations per time-series and uses triangular and sinusoidal functions. The algorithm is considered to be 20% more accurate than most conventional technologies available from the major vendors. The system can provide the analysis on pack, product, manufacturer, division, city, area, zone, Ringitt, Rupee, Dollar, Units all in one go. The system therefore allows multiple hierarchies of data to be included for predictive analysis. Check out www.idasm.net or write to parag@idasm.net, arijay@idasm.net or admin@idasm.net

Very good discussion point... often neglected by the majority...
Some clarification needed here.

1. data mining and predictive analytics fall into the same category - No. Two different things. Crudely, data mining is equivalent to data exploration.
2. data mining (after all, you are "drilling" down into the data!)..... this is perfect. True. Question - how does one drill down or find or explore? Plenty of different approaches. As suitable to an analyst. End-result would be expected to get to the same outcome or close to one.
3. Automatically building predictive models - and putting across predictions..... can work only in cases of repeatitive processes. Else, not recommended. It will invariably end up in "garbage-in-garbage-out" situations... no matter which tools are used.

Thanks for reading.

That's a nice piece. I am looking at predictive analytics to increase the value of data for my client.
