The unthinkable has happened. Captain Marvel has lost his crown and mad Indians have started baying for his throne. But then what more can one expect of a nation that values success at any cost, but individually has failure written all over?
India lost to England and the media and its millions of news lapping rabid followers have started to bark. The media had already behaved like a responsible one by warming up with stories of rifts within the team even before India’s campaign got underway. And as the days go by, the bark is only going to get louder. Dhoni’s effigy has been burnt at Ranchi under 24 hours of defeat. And I won't be surprised if the effigies of other players are burnt too, stones pelted at their homes, and their near and dear ones humiliated.
And the single logic will be if you make the money you do, then you bloody well win. To me it’s more of anger at not being able to make the kind of money that some cricketers make than ire at the team having lost. Also, gamblers who foolishly betted on Team India thinking the other teams were just around to make Dhoni and his boys look good will vent out their frustration on having lost neat sums of money.
Advertisers and marketing professionals who backed Team India to win will also be spewing venom. And politicians will in all likelihood jump into to the fray to extract their pound of flesh.
Grow up India for every match cannot be won and Dhoni isn’t God. So be graceful, look above you selfish motives for grief, and allow the team its losses for if we look at the team’s performance since they won the T20 cup in 2007, they have won more often than lost. And all of us are allowed a few losses, some more than the others.
Here are the two news items below from the Media to Compare:
This one is just after the early exit of India from the World cup
Mar 18: Enraged cricket fans took to the streets, burnt players' effigies and vandalised Mahendra Singh Dhoni's house in the Jharkhand capital today after India crashed to a defeat against Bangladesh in the World Cup. The defeat sparked strong reactions back home. Damage was reported when around 50 youths assembled and attacked the construction site of the new house of dashing India stumper Dhoni in Ranchi.
This one is just after the T20 worldcup victory.
Sep 24 : Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be conferred Jharkhand Ratna honour for making the state proud by successfully leading the cricket team to the Twenty20 World Cup final.
The world has turned upside down for MSD in the last six months. The same people who wanted to go for his hard earned house, have now crowned him as Jharkhand Ratna.
What a change ?
Cricket craze is more than any other craze in India.
The reaction of the entire Nation after the T20 world cup victory is something to be analyzed carefully. It is as if India has beaten the Pakistan in a real war.
We should remember that the difference between the two sides was only a ball and 5 runs
I am not saying Dhoni does not deserve all this praise, and prize but I am only saying that people and the government should alweays maintain balance.
Yes , the occassion was big and Dhoni delivered. What if Dhoni had failed in his gamble of bowling the last over with Joginder Sharma ? Again the pundits and critics would have gone for Dhoni's head saying that Dhoni's inexperience has cost India the worldcup victory.
Afterall Cricket is a game and every moment has its own merits.
Only victory and success counts. We only count the centuries and not the nineties.Just look at the way Dinesh Karthick has been treated after his repeat failures in One dayers at England and T20 World cup. He is almost forgotten now. This should not be the case. Even if had failed, we should be proud of our cricketers and stand by them.
From a very poor world cup show, they raised like a phoenix and captured the T20 world cup which is commendable.
Don’t get carried away by success and get bogged down by failures. Its all in the game.
Carry on Dhoni!

You lose some you win some.I wish the cricket fans in India would stop targeting the captains when the team fails. Did you hear of any protest in Australia?
one has to taste bitter after eating sweet enough times and this is natural.cricket fans targetting captain / players is very common scenario in our country and need not be bothered.comming to media, it is as usal the same gimmick, uplifting when wins and defaming when losed.every one played thier best but there is no hard and fast rule that one side should win always when they played/excelled in all manners.there is something else behind every victory and defeat which is invisible.only thing is we should accept in right spirit.
Yes you are right shihid,Cricket is a team effort,no one should be blamed for it.Though there is responsibility of captain but performance depends fully on the player only. So,why Dhoni should be tortured like this.We are human being so we should think like a human only. The people can show their anger on innocent people only ,why dont they teach lesson to corrupt politicians, why dont they think for their nation.Destruction will never bring victory to them .
Very good article and we can learn alot from this. I personally feel that Dhoni is good captain. If we look into his statements, the same expose his maturity and also it emphasize that Dhoni is a good leader to lead our Indian team. But, naturally, the leader should bear the consequences of both success and failure. Failure is also part of life and in our case, its a team failure. Many say that Dhoni is not playing his natural game and not playing big shots. What can he do, when other batsmen do not give confidence that they can save the team. I think, in the recent past, Dhoni is not confident of his team's abilities and also form. Anyway, best of luck Dhoni.
I think it is a part of game 1 will loose and 1 will win....
People think emotionally and protest which wrong, instead of that we should motivate our Indian team to perform better in the future....
We should trust on our players...
Well...Cricket is always a god for Indians, and no one in world love to face defeat, same with us. We cant see India loosing world cup like this. But the cricketers are too human, they feel tired too.
I will pray that 2011 world cup will be ours, and Dhoni will lead Indians to success...
The way they prepared for the worldcup was great ie through passsing a grilling phase of IPL but result could not come. They didnt play also. Hope they plan better in future. I have faith on Dhoni, gambhi, raina and yuvaraj.
