This is a very crucial report...I felt literally crying that what are we doing to ourselves....

More than $ 125 billion worth of funds meant for the uplift of Indians were illegally siphoned out of the country by corrupt politicians and corporates between 2000 and 2008, hindering inclusive growth, says a leading think tank here.

"Much of the funds flowing out are generated at home within India and then sent illegally abroad," said an upcoming report from Global Financial Integrity (GFI).

"So the growth of corruption and India's underground economy contributes significantly to illicit financial flows from the country," said the research arm of the Centre for International Policy (CIP).

"Corruption is rampant in India as it is in almost all developing countries. Both corrupt political and corporate officers manage to siphon off funds - intended to aid the people of India - off to political and private sector elite," it said.

http://www.hobotraveler.com/137hampi01/0027.JPG

"Recent efforts in India to challenge this corrupt affront on humanity have been met with severe violence," junior GFI economist Karly Curcio said in a blog on the report on illicit financial flows from India and explaining its linkages with poverty, corruption, and crime.

"As India develops economically and builds better infrastructure, one would think all Indian citizens would see an increased standard of living and that the income inequality levels would fall," says the blog post following a news report about recent violent crimes in India against whistleblowers.

http://www.humansoul.com/Beggar%20in%20India.jpg   "However, the gini coefficient, which measures income inequality, has actually increased over the time period measured, 2000-2005, from 0.32 to 0.37 on a scale of 0 to 1, with 1 being the highest income inequality," Curcio wrote.

"In India, as in other currently developing countries, as the economy grows, so do illicit flows," she wrote. "This positive correlation exhibits the increased incentives to conduct illicit flows, mostly because more money is flowing within the system to steal away and constant greed is tapping into that pool."

India ranked 84 out of 180 countries in Transparency International's 2009 Corruptions Perceptions Index ranking.

"As corruption continues to plague both the country and its ability to develop free and fair institutions to monitor and charge corrupt officials, the majority of India's economic growth will never make it to the people of India who desperately need it the most," Curcio warned.

India's legislative efforts to protect whistleblowers and those who work to fight corruption is a step in the right direction, however more must be done, she says calling for global efforts to make it harder to move illicit funds around the world.

These efforts include increasing financial transparency, as well as stronger work by developed-country governments to crack down on their home banks accepting these laundered, illicit funds, Curcio said.

Our money converted into black money & we are getting extra money as loans from other countries...

So do you feel proud to call yourself as an Indian.????

What a great finding!!!! Foreign billionaires are donating 50% of their property for the needy and our Politicians/People are taking 100% property of the poor and becoming unofficial billionaires of the world. Just go through the recent property claims of our politicians. I was laughing at those figures and I'm shamed to be an Indian. I have no doubts.

Most of the communities in India (such as Bengali), are succumbed in 'Culture of Poverty'(a theory introduced by an American anthropologist Oscar Lewis), irrespective of class or economic strata, lives in pavement or apartment. Nobody is at all ashamed of the deep-rooted corruption, decaying general quality of life, worst Politico-administrative system, weak mother language, continuous absorption of common space (mental as well as physical, both). We are becoming fathers & mothers only by self-procreation, mindlessly & blindfold. Simply depriving their(the children) fundamental rights of a decent, caring society, fearless & dignified living. Do not ever look for any other positive alternative behaviour (values) to perform human way of parenthood, i.e. deliberately co-parenting of those children those are born out of ignorance, real poverty. All of us are being driven only by the very animal instinct. If the Bengali people ever be able to bring that genuine freedom (from vicious cycle of 'poverty') in their own life/attitude, involve themselves in 'Production of Space' (Henri Lefebvre), at least initiate a movement by heart, decent & dedicated Politics will definitely come up. - Siddhartha Bandyopadhyay, 16/4, Girish Banerjee Lane, Howrah-711101.

The pride of a nation is its citizens as the pride of a parent is their children. Though the nation has within its power to curb all practices of corruption by the mechanism of judicial and constitutional lay-outs, the corrupt crowd seldom hesitates in harvesting their share of the government’s fund. This social cancer has grown to an incurable level and every politician contributes a share that adds up. Thus the corruption baton is passed on to the successive elected.
A politician needs to be a leader engaged in civil administration and only those who are compassionate needs to be identified. But in India the every other person who does not have a proper occupation is a leading politician. Politics is not an occupation it needs to be a submission, a submission to take care of the destitute. Indian politics work the opposite way and provide the un-corrupt an opportunity to be corrupt, because the government jobs are arenas where the spear heading politicians train their subordinates well versed in their trade. The Government changes once in every five years, but the trained servant imparts a portion of the obtained training to the new set-up and the show moves on endless. Though this is said in general there will be exceptions and those exceptional ones are put to ordeal throughout.
It’s high time to think of a changed democratic order. The swindling of the politicians will prevail as long as the governing group do not have a proper orientation of the uses of their powers (The statement does not mean that they are not exposed to such orientations now). This could be not achieved immediately. But sure on the long run with the erudite at the forefront could find a way out.
Just as everyone should be proud of what he or she is, a parent should be proud of their children and vice versa. Indians long to be proud as Indians and wish to remain so with the rich cultural heritages and spiritual strengths earned over a period of time.
Let the shamed shun the shame and the rest find a way out to find a ‘Brave New India’.
Thanks Ms. Ravali for the subject of discussion.

Thanks Ravali, you provided this opportunity to say it again "Yes I'm PROUD to be Indian".
If politicians are corrupt, sorry, why if... Yes they are corrupt and we elect them!!!
We elect them either by giving them a vote or by not casting the vote...
Every step we face corruption and the report shows how deep rooted it is. Let us talk or ideate on how to get rid of corruption or discourage corruption, may be we find out a way...

I feel proud to be an Indian, but not a "CORRUPT INDIAN". Corruption is a national shame, We must realize that every one of us is responsible for this.

I appreciate the concern of the writer and sympathise with her. But just because of gullible and corrupt system we should be overtly negative about the future, you have to be optimistic and for this you have to say that you are proud to be Indian, at least if not by deed , by birth! So what? Has India turned out these corrupt people or were these corrupt people not there since 1947 or even before that, cutting deals in each and every public utility works? NO, it is we, the people of India who have led ourselved to this cycle of intense corruption so much so that the entire system is rotten and can collapse any given day. This all has been done by us.We only bred them and we only closed our eyes and we only try to find ways in each and every small matter-the result , a web of inter-related systemic corruption which is now not possible by any individual to clean it. A wholesome change is needed. But the point is who will bell the cat. We are still a very insecure country and after ensuring our future, we then look to the future of our next generation and only then we decide to do something for others. With such a selfish mentality how do you not expect hoarding for the self-corruptin for the self-

nice topic... I like to say that when we get an opportunity to make a change we don't take it. During the election campaign the main point of opposition campaign was to get back the funds in foreign accounts. no one bothered to think before voting. i am not an ardent follower of them either, but whats harm in giving them a chance.

we only talk talk talk, do nothing when needed. enough chance was given to this puppet government. they just bend rules according to their needs. a puppet Pres. + a puppet Prime. :( GOD HELP US

I feel proud to be an Indian, but not a "CORRUPT INDIAN". It seems that one out of every three Indian is corrupt. Corruption is a national shame, and a cancer which eats into our vitals. We must realize that every one of us is responsible for this state of affairs. We must teach our children not to be corrupt by becoming good role models for them.

Well, this is what that would happen when we live in a country where votes are sold. Currently it is between Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10,000 per vote in South TN. Earlier it was Rs. 100 or Rs. 200, a packet of Biriani and liquor. When politicians have to shell out crores for each election what do you except them to do. They have to make that money before the next election and hence they in turn take the help of bureaucrats and other officials who in turn make a percentage for themselves. All this has to happen before the next elections. This has been happening for a long time; only thing is that now it is very much noticeable because the amounts are high. Hence, not just the politicians and officials are to blame; equally to blame are those who take money for voting.

When I was a Child, I read in my Schooling about an Artist. The Artist wanted know really, how well he made Paintings. So, he decided to put for public opinion. He made a ditto, two paintings. No difference at all anyway (you can say XEROX).

First day, he kept, one of it, in the thoroughfare with Note," Please mark all the nice part". Evening, he went & collected it. To his surprise, whole picture was marked good.He was very happy about it.

Next day, he kept , the second one of it that was a ditto of the earlier one, with a Note," Please mark all the bad part". Evening , he went & collected it. To his surprise, the whole picture was marked bad. He was quiet unhappy about this.

Now, I hope you understand what I am driving at. When you analyze a report it will be like that. May be some amount of truth in it. But, it need not stop your head on. Amplifying a negativism is not a good tool for growth. It is a good weapon that others use to spoil us.

Significant of Co-efficient, in Statistics we say," If it is acceptable to within the range, accept it" & go for production.

Yes these type of stories sometimes make the proud feeling dismal but then I think that the world is like that....there are some 100 countries worse than us.. and my proud button gets pressed again.
I have to keep it pressed to confront the situation and keep on hoping, with necessary efforts, that the situation will improve.

It is not surprising that corruption is eating our society. We cannot control it as it is spread across our gene by generation. Since birth we are paying to government machinery to do our job. We pay for our birth certificate, we pay for our education, we pay for our Job, we pay everywhere & where ever is required.

At last our relations pay for our death certificates. So it is now a part of society & we have to live with it. No one will change it because everyone has vested interest.

Our current PM has no guts or power to call back or freeze Swiss accounts where exactly all illegal moneys are kept.
