Heavy rains and landslides are the culprit that death toll is now 74!

Earthquake of magnitude 6.8 was esperienced by India , Nepal and China.

At least 58 people were killed and hundreds injured in Sikkim, Bengal and Bihar, in addition to nine deaths in Nepal and seven in Tibet and the toll is likely to rise!

Almost nothing is left intact on the Gangtok-Chungthang road lenght 100 km!

The roads and bridges linking Meeli and Namchi in south Sikkim and Rawangle in west Sikkim have been severely damages and tourists have been warned not to venture beyond Gangtok. This natural calamity is also going hit tourism upto some extent.

Though a force of 6000 man was deployed for rescue only few could reach because of so many obstacles on the way.

The earthquake damaged more than 1 lakh of the 1.2 lakh houses in Gangtok.

The condition is miserable and help is not reaching as required and here we have no one to blame..

Really tragic. Building structures in the earthquake prone areas shall be designed in such way that they can withstand the earthquake and minimize the damage and lives. The Govt. shall strictly enforce these rules and regulations. We cant control the natural disastrous but we can minimise the damage. The quake recorded 6.8 magnitude on Richter scale, its a strong earthquake, yet we can minimise the death toll.

Its really pathetic, Ms. Sarika. Natural disaster knows no bounds, added to the peril what earthquake had created, the rain God was not kind to them, as well. Many injured have succumbed to death, for want of timely medical aid. In the era of technological advancement in every sphere, how come we have so single solution to pre-empt such earth quakes. Beasts, birds and insects have basic instinct to know in advance such major disasters. We should try and develop some mechanism following their instinct by training them, as we do in training the dogs for nabbing thieves!

I REALLY FEEL SORRY FOR THE RESIDENTS AFFECTED AND PRAY TO THE TO BE WITH THEM.
INDIA HAS TO PREPARE ITSELF TO BE MORE PROACTIVE FOR NATURAL CALAMITIES, AS WE CAN SEE EVERY YEAR SOMETHING HAPPENS AND THE RELIEF IS ALWAYS DELAYED, WE SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR THESE HAPPENINGS AND BE READY TO PROVIDE HELP TO ALL THE AFFECTED AT THE EARLIEST POSSIBLE TIME !

I express my deep sorrow at the loss of life and sufferings of the people of Sikkim. Govt. of India's response to despatch relief team with materials is commendable. Public and industrial houses should donate generously to mitigate the sufferings of the earthquake victims.

Though we can not control natural calamities we surely can learn lessons how to make safer structures, how to better manage rescue and relief and it is on this score that we in India refuse to learn anything and here change in mindset can surely help both within and outside of governance.

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake hit the Himalayan states Nepal and Sikkim (India) 12:40:48 UT (6:11 PM at epicenter). The depth of the hypocenter was at 20.7 km. The earthquake has caused 74 victims so far and much damage in India, Nepal and Tibet (China). It was also well felt in Bangladesh and some damage has been reported from Bhutan.
The September 18, 2011 Sikkim, India earthquake occurred near the boundary between the India and Eurasia plates, in the mountainous region of northeast India near the Nepalese border.
Initial analysis suggest the earthquake was complex, likely a result of two events occurring close together in time at depths of approximately 20 km beneath the Earth's surface.
I'm sorry for their loss, if there is anything I can do, even listen, let me know.
