Yes, I agree with the point and also the elearning industry is now accepting this fact that the major slice of the learning is happening through informal interactions, may be between peers or other learning stake holders. So why not we make this informal, in-context learning the part of the formal learning course, which will also enhance the learner's engagement and reduces the drop out level.
Let's consider the major informal interactions,
"Debate", "Q&A's", "Opinions", "references to different points", "sharing previous sources of knowledge".
Whatif all this is available and allowed to do on the spot (in learning environment), learner don't need to go out of the page even, I mean learners can debate on others topic or can create their own to have others views, can participate or create Q&A's, Polls, Link sets, Tag Clouds. and all this on the very learning course page.
And great thing is, we can harness the whole conversation at any given moment. Which can be use to improve the quality of existing content or some other meaningful purpose.
What is happening is, a small icon will appear on the elearning course pages, where learner can click and a bubble will invoke there, which is movable widget, we can set its transparency as well, is it is obstructing the view.
and all these above mentioned informal interactions are ready to practice on that bubble.
People are saying it is a web 2.0 application, but for me it is an innovation.
Adding to it, this software as a services tool is in its beta versions, so it is available at bare minimum price points. You don't need to have any additional plug-in or even download. Just write a single code in the html and you can use this.
the name of this innovation is "FlockPod" and the creators are "Harbinger Knowledge Products".
